The Tie That Binds

Seated atop an empty stairwell would be none other than the 2008 Grand Prix Champion, Jim O’Brien. Behind him, a seemingly never-ending hallway of darkness; with the exception of an open door providing the only light to our scene, with sounds of joy and liveliness emitting from it. Like a party. But Jim not being the life of a party?

Obviously, this is not the Jim O’Brien we’re used to seeing. Firstly… yes, that’s a red flannel shirt covering his upper half. Haven’t seen that since the good ol’ days.

Jim looks over his shoulder, then returning his attention back to us.

O’Brien: “The guys are having a pre-show party, but I’m not quite in the mood. I guess the Prozac hasn’t kicked in yet.”

With Jim shifting around in the littler light we have, we can see the 5 o’clock shadow we’re accustomed to, it’s gotten pretty thick (if 5 o’clock is the shadow, then Jim’s more around the 8:45 variety… whatever that means). His usual grumpiness seems to have taken a backseat to a general cold and… melancholy that can be felt in the air.

O’Brien: “I guess I can’t help but get down in the dumps once in awhile… I mean, the whole world’s going to hell, right? Barack Obama is pushing for a bail-out that’ll wind up throwing America into the depression he’s ‘trying’ to prevent… We wouldn’t even be in this mess if the schleps and cretins who sucked off of the teat of welfare didn’t live outside their means. All it’s doing is creating a wedge between the wealthy, successful members of society who have worked their rears off to get where they are – like me - and degenerates who waste their money, live outside their means and are begging the government for a handout. Like a reward for their bad behavior while the ones who pay their taxes on time, work hard and earn their keep are left out in the cold.

What does that say about our culture when being an honest, hard working, contributing member of society is the bad guy? Like me for example… I’m an honest, hard working, contributing member of the wrestling world and everyone hates my guts because of it. I’ve had my tires slashed, my rental cars keyed, fecal matter thrown at my caravan; I’ve been spit on, cursed at, mocked …”

A certain energy comes over the Man in Black, as a gleam shows up in his eye and his mannerisms become more animated.

O’Brien: “And y’know why? I’m hated because I’m better than everyone. I’m hated because I’m right. I tell the truth, and people can’t handle it. The schmucks and the troglodytes in the crowd can’t stand to see someone who’s worked harder and become more successful than they have. And it’s not just them, it goes all the way back to the locker room as well. The ‘rookies,’ the younger wrestlers… They hate the veterans. They hate guys like me, who’ve forgotten more about the business than they’ll ever know. They hate me because I’m more dedicated to this sport after 12 and a half years than they ever will be in their careers. Because I’ve bled, sweat and sacrificed more than they’ll ever comprehend. And what made it worse? I was willing to help. I wanted to pass the proverbial torch. Only to have the very torch carried by the fathers of FIW – the Silent Rage’s, the Fearod’s, the Savage’s, the Fozzy McQueen’s – slapped out of my God damn hands by punk kids who don’t appreciate how fucking good they HAVE IT!”

A maniacal edge seems to have come over the Divine Outlaw, who releases a frustrated chuckle from within.

O’Brien: “Which is why, LIAM, our situation is as unique as it is! Because in all reality… we should be allies. We should be standing side-by-side, fighting for the traditions we were taught; and the respect we deserve and the respect of the business. But like I said so long ago, Liam: It’s not what you did that got under my skin, it’s what you didn’t do. You’re the neglecting parent, Liam. The passive teacher who accepts mediocrity; the bank who loans thousands of dollars to the poor, knowing they can never repay you. You’re a failure as a leader, Liam.”

With that, Jim yanks into his back pocket and pulls out… a steel chain. A very familiar steel chain, with dots of brown and maroon dusting it. And it’s not dirt, I can assure you. Jim wraps the chain around his right fist, almost mesmerized by its wonder…

O’Brien: “Does this look familiar, Liam?” *chuckles* “A couple weeks ago, Mr. Keenan righted a wrong when he let the mad dog loose. This Sunday, I’m going to right the wrong of Mr. Keenan appointing you the captain of FIW’s team against the Rejects. I’m going to right the wrong of Reed Keenan putting his confidence in you, when you and I are bound by a steel chain. Which is very fitting, seeing as I’m the Man of Steel, and I’ve used steel to abuse, humiliate and destroy you time and time again. It’s the tie that binds, Liam. The tie. That binds.”

A smirk slithers across the Man in Black’s face, with intensity and hatred roaring in his eyes.

O’Brien: “Blessed be the tie that binds…”

Jim holds his gaze into Liam’s eyes, his very soul, before we… fade out.
