Are you happy where you're sleeping? Dropping from the orbit of obscurity, the scene fades in and opens in a small hotel room. The walls are white and a window gives a night-time view of the Belfast city centre. Sat on a narrow, single bed is the Fighting Spirit Champion; Ash Koopa. The rest of the room is cut from view, possibly on purpose, as it appears as though Ash is staring at someone or something in particular. Someone or something out of the shot. Wearing just black boxer shorts, Ash gently strokes the Fighting Spirit Championship belt as it lay on his lap like a pet cat. Ash: "So what exactly is the purpose of this visit? You only ever visit when either you have a problem or I have one. And normally, your problem is that you perceive me to have one and you wish to help. So really, I guess I should be asking, what is wrong with me this time?" The camera pans out and reveals a large man sat on a chair at the end of Ash's bed, his legs straddling the back of the seat. The man, Ash's long-time mentor, is Maxx Anderson. Dressed in a red t-shirt and black trousers, Maxx looks at Ash with a smirk on his face. Maxx: "You think you know me so well.." Ash: "I've known you fourteen years, Maxx. I pretended I was your son for the first two years, beat you up for another two, and then became your boss. I know you better than anyone." Maxx: "I think that's a little unfair. We beat each other up for two years. Remember, twenty five wins each?" Ash: "I remember.." Narrowing his eyes, Ash glares at Maxx and takes a deep breath. Ash: "Besides all of that, last time you were here, we had a match and-" Maxx: "Which I won, no less." Ash: "Disqualification, Maxx. I cracked your skull open with a whisky bottle. And that was only after dropping you on your head and making you pass out with the K-Klutch. So you can have your moral victory, but I won that battle." Both men eye each other up, looking more and more intense as the seconds pass them by, before they both smirk at one another and chuckle. Ash: "Even still, Maxx, last time you were here, we did not see eye to eye. What's changed?" Maxx: "You, Ash. You've changed. Again." As if to show understanding, Ash nods as Maxx points to the Fighting Spirit Championship. Maxx: "Last time we met up, you didn't have that. You didn't have a slew of victories over the best in Full Intensity Wrestling's history. I don't know whether a little light finally went on inside your head and got you on track, or if that Onikage guy was actually beneficial for you, but you've finally become a success in this place." Ash: "So, you want a slice?" Maxx: "No, I don't want a slice. I don't want any money or gifts or anything. I may have trained you, but you've achieved this by yourself. Besides, I'm a rich man. I sold off all my properties six months ago. I got more money for them than what I paid originally, though not as much as I could have done. But obviously, with this damn credit crunch, everyone is feeling the pinch a little more.." Ash: "Congratulations on your success. However, that still doesn't bring us to the reason that you're here." Finding something amusing in Ash's comment, Maxx chuckles to himself. As a result, Ash glares at his mentor and strokes the Fighting Spirit Championship a little harder than before. Ash: "Maxx, we hit England in a couple of weeks time. Could you not have waited? Why did you feel the need to come over to Belfast and insist on meeting me an hour before midnight?" Maxx: "Because you have a problem." Groaning ensues as Maxx chuckles again. Ash: "I knew it. What, pray tell, is my problem?" Maxx: "Your own ability is your problem, Ash. You pretty much out-class anyone in this promotion. You throw harder punches than the brawlers. You have more grace than the fliers. And you're in a league of your own in comparison to the technical athletes. People have been talking and you're getting noticed Ash. Hell, you've beaten the World Champion or whatever they call it here in a straight match.." Ash: "Dual Crown Champion. Yeah, I beat Prime. And yeah, I'm getting attention. But that is what I want. I set out to prove to all of the people who follow wrestling that I am one of the best - if not the best - and that I deserve a place in history, regardless of whether it is given to me or I force myself into lore." Maxx: "And that's just it. You're doing everything right, apart from one thing. You're picking a fight with the wrong people.." Unsure of where this is going, Ash carefully eyes Maxx. Maxx: "I've been watching this all unfold from my armchair, Ash. I'm not here to tell you to back off, because I know you won't. I know you want your shot at the big strap. All I want you to realise is that you're picking a fight with a group of men who are mostly bigger than you and you've alienated yourself from the rest of the roster. With the Rejects, you had back-up. As the KoopaManiac, you had people who respected you. Right now, you've got no-one.." Ash: "Perhaps I don't need anyone? I've beaten them all before and I can do it again. Chances are, it'll be happening this Sunday." Maxx: "I hate to break it to you, but you cannot beat six people by yourself. No-one will come to your help on Sunday if you get ambushed by Jim O'Brien or by that Harrison guy. Even with your Fighting Spirit Championship and all of the confidence it's given you, there is no way you can do anything to stop them all. And that is why I'm here." As Maxx nods, Ash looks down to the belt in his lap, then back to his mentor. Ash: "So you've come to tell me that I can't beat a group of people and that I shouldn't be dealing with them? Well, thanks Maxx. Thanks for stopping by." Maxx: "I saw it last week, Ash. I saw the fear. Everyone did." Hearing this, Ash's face softens a little. Ash: "A moment of weakness. That's all." Maxx: "Whatever you say, Ash. But it was there. And if there's a sliver of a chance it can come through again, the Champ and his goons are going to tear it wide open. You may like your head games, Ash, but six potential opponents can turn it all around on you." Ash: "So what do you propose? I pull out of the ReVolt Rumble and let someone else take my moment of glory? I have a chance, Sunday night, to beat nearly everyone in this promotion, Maxx. I could beat the best part of twenty-five people on my road to glory. My destiny. Are you suggesting I just give all that up to avoid picking a fight with boys that are bigger than me?" Maxx: "On the contrary, I was going to offer my help." A look of shock washes over Ash's face and his jaw almost drops, though he is just barely able to catch it and hold it up. Ash: "Help? What kind of help?" Maxx: "I'm surprised you even have to ask that. Now, I can't offer you six guys to even the odds, but for as long as you're battling the Champ and his goons, I'll have your back. Me, HiM and Krusher. We'll get the old gang back together and bust some nuts on your road to the Dual Crown." Ash: "I.." Trailing off, Ash shifts on the bed and looks to the floor in a daze. He takes a deep breath and glances up at Maxx, then out the window into Belfast, before looking back down to the belt on his lap. A smile - a warm, genuine smile - crosses Ash's face as he looks back to Maxx. Ash: "I appreciate the offer, Maxx, but I must decline." Maxx: "Why?" Ash: "As you said, this belt changed me. I have a renewed confidence in myself and I have picked this fight Smark's Associates. Granted, I wouldn't have laid down for Prime at all, so the situation was born out of necessity. Necessity to win and create a legacy. And I wouldn't change that. I started this and I intend fully to finish it, whether it be this Sunday or anytime in the near future. And if I share that, it will only cheapen the outcome for me." Shuffling across the bed, Ash places his hand on Maxx's shoulder and stares into his eyes. Ash: "This is greatly appreciated and will not be forgotten, old friend." The two men nod to one another. And then the scene fades. [end] |
