El Hijo Del O'Brien

It’s late day as the sun is going down and stars start to appear in the sky. We find ourselves on a deck, overlooking a good size body of water. Around the (pond) is a track with a few people here and there running around it, looks to be about a 3 mile run all the way around, and beyond the track are woods where we catch a quick glance at a deer, ears up looking at us before is scampers away. Directly in front of us also on the deck stands the masked O’Brien. He is wearing a black tee, jean shorts and facing away from the camera. There are a few fishing poles propped on the deck only staying there from a metal piece resembling a flag holder. (Where you would hang an American/Mexican/ etc. flag) The place seems to spark a memory in our heads, b/c it looks quite familiar however we can’t place our finger on it. O’Brien swings around, seeming to be prepared for the interview, and begins talking in a quiet voice. JO: Who could have thought something I hated as a kid, turning into something I enjoy very much so now. Jorge shrugs as he walks over to our left and sits on a wooden finished bench. JO: Fishing use to be so boring to me when I was younger, but now it’s more relaxed than anything. I mean it is truly an art, it takes skills beyond belief. Here I was thinking wrestling was hard, and then I come out here and get my ass kicked by a few fish. Sometimes I would leave without even getting a single bite, never the less actually pulling one in. Jorge places his fist over his mouth, propping his arm with his other arm, by sliding it under his elbow across his body. JO: Then I was watching one of my father’s old interviews, it was the last match he had against Kennedy. To my father that was one of the biggest matches of his career, b/c I don’t know how many people know this but those two HATED each other. Jorge shakes his head as he lowers his arms onto his chest crossing them. JO: Now you are asking yourself, “what does this have to do with fishing?” Well I’ll tell you. If you recall, which I am sure you do, my father was in this same location fishing in that interview. My initial reason for watching the footage was to see one of the greats at work in an interview; however I found some footage before what wasn’t actually seen by our viewers. This footage included my father actually fishing, and surprisingly enough he caught a lot. Intrigued by skill I continued to watch his technique. The way he hooked his bait, the way he cast it out, the way he reeled it back in, it was all perfect. After watching him catch fish after fish, and seeing the expression of relaxation and happiness before a match that meant everything to him, well it made me start thinking. If such an act can calm my father, maybe, just maybe if I study his skills and learn to fish I may be as relaxed as he and not be so worked up about my matches. Jorge gets up, grabs one of his poles and casts it into the water. JO: Now watch. Jorge reels in the line slowly working the bait, and although we cannot see through the water due to the darkness of the pond, we see he gets a hit from the pole jerking towards the water as Jorge jerks the pole back to hook the fish. A few seconds and a struggle later Jorge pulls in a Largemouth bass. Good estimate is about 12 inches in length and around 4 pounds, not a bad catch at all. After unhooking the fish, kissing the top of it, he tosses it back into the water for it to live another day. JO: It’s when I starting becoming a better fisherman that I realized a wrestling match in fact is a lot like fishing. Now let me explain. First off you need to first know what kind of fish you will be fishing for, or the person/people you will be facing against in the match. Second you need to know what type of bait, tools, and skills you will need to bring with you to accomplish winning or catching your fish. You need to know what style you will need to be using, for it is different with every fish or opponent you have. In the end it’s a fight for your fish or opponent to accomplish their goal of getting away with the win, while you try and reel in the victory and satisfaction. Jorge shakes his head in approval and agreement of what he just said. JO: My father as of late has been talking about how he holds the future of FIW in his hands, and I can’t exactly disagree with him. He can cash in his shot for the Duel Crown whenever he feels fit, and as soon as Prime drops the title dad will cash his shot and again become Duel Crown champ. There is only one thing that has slipped my father’s mind, and that is the other titles that make up this beautiful company. Jorge has placed the pole back onto its original spot, and is now focused completely on the camera. JO: I stopped and realized that my father will not be around to carry this company on his shoulders forever, that someone must step up and take his place once he leaves. Obviously I want to be that individual, and I have had my opportunity in the past when I had my Duel Crown title shot against Ethan, however I wasn’t ready for that prestigious of a title. I mean let’s face it, not even the great Jim O’Brien started at the top. Jorge pauses for a bit before continuing. JO: No, he actually started the same place as all of us start, and eventually made it to the thrown he sits on today. In fact one of his first major accomplishments over the years, the one that may have sparked his ignition was winning the FSC. It seemed after grabbing that title, he single handedly made that belt what it is today, and not only that but he later went on to win the Duel Crown title in December 2004. Jorge hangs his head and looks towards the deck with a sigh. JO: Then the dreaded drug addiction got a hold of him, and he went on that leave of absents in April 2006. Those were hard times for my father, but not even that could keep the man down. No he made his return December 2007, and who was the first person he went after? That’s right, Daisuke Tanaka, at the time the FSC. We all remember what happened next, he beat through a few people before getting his hands on the FS champ and later won the match to become once again the Fighting Spirit Champion in FIW…… Jorge walks away towards his pole once more before swinging back around. JO: Oh yeah did I mention, that match was at Anarchy in the UK. And with that the scene fades. NO FISH WHERE HARMED IN THE MAKING OF THIS VIDEO. |
