Paper wrapped flowers in one hand and a white flowing sundress over her body, Blink stands in front of Providence St Vincent Med Center looking up at one of the windows along the wall as if telling herself that that’s the one where she’ll soon find herself in. A deep breath before Blink takes a step forward, which to her feels like the hardest thing imaginable.
Blink instantly freezes up and looks back toward the window where she’s certain someone is on the other side of it watching her. Blink: I…I can’t. Blink turns to make her retreat but hearing a voice call out from behind, she winds up turning around to spot Cyndi making her way from the hospitals entrance toward her. Cyndi: It’s about time you decided to come pay her a visit. Blink: Cyndi. That’s her name and now she’s stopping directly in front of Blink with a puzzled look on her face. Hey! The first real emotion shown by Cyndi in a while! Cyndi: Hm? Blink: I don’t think I can face her…not after what I did. Cyndi: Miss. Emily constantly finds herself back in front of you. Blink: This is different. She never forced herself onto me. Cyndi: No…she never did. In fact, Miss. Emily found your actions the other day to be quite deplorable. Oh, that’ll help her. Cyndi: But it isn’t up to Miss. Emily on how you should feel about Catherine. Blink: I just…don’t want her to see me anymore. Cyndi: Shame… Cyndi turns back to look up at one of the windows. Cyndi: She won’t shut up about wanting to see you. No response from Blink so Cyndi is forced to continue on herself. Cyndi: You’ve heard she refuses to press charges, right? Blink: Yes. Blink says that as though she had been expecting quite the opposite. Cyndi: She told me it was because she didn’t want any awkwardness when you came to visit her. Blink looks toward the window as Cyndi turns around. Cyndi: So I’ll repeat, she won’t shut up about wanting to see you. It takes Blink a moment but she suddenly builds up enough nerves to step forward and into the hospital as Cyndi starts up back toward her own ride. The moment of truth for Blink as she stands in front of Catherine’s hospital room door. Taking in a deep breath, Blink goes for a knock but decides instead to just enter. Inside she finds nobody by Catherine and a nurse checking over a clipboard. They both notice Blink at about roughly the same time and after placing down the clipboard, the nurse announces that she’ll take her leave closing the door gently behind her. Catherine’s smile, though weak, still retains its gentle warmness inviting Blink over to the open chair beside her bed. Blink takes the spot but Catherine seems to desire a little more as she holds up her hand for her partner to take hold of between her own. Of course that’s following the part where she places the flowers off to the side. Catherine notices them and shakes her head. Catherine: Ugh, flowers, how much more of a cliché can you be? Blink: Sorry. Catherine: Stop whispering so much, it was never really you. I remember you used to beat me around and threaten my life whenever I badmouthed your precious Emily. Blink: Hm. Blink smiles as though those were good times. Certainly a lot better than this as Catherine turns her head to cough a little. Blink begins to rise up but gets a “no go” slashing motion from Catherine settling her down. Catherine: It’s okay. Geez, after all I’m supposed to be the one protecting you. Blink: Which is why you’re going to get better. Catherine: God, didn’t I tell you to stop being such a cliché? So from now on, spare me the sob talk about future plans of running away together or playing in fields again. Really, how can any of that— Catherine stops when she feels the grip over her hand tighten and even moisten a little as tears from Blinks face begin dripping down. Blink: You promised. You promised you’d be there whenever I needed you. How could you be there if… Blink can’t even finish the sentence as it delivers a thought to her head she doesn’t wish to even think about. She doesn’t even want to think about thinking about it so how could she finish such a sentence? Instead, he tears remain falling until Catherine uses a free hand to run the back of her finger under her eyes. Catherine: Hey. Not to be mushy or anything stupid like that, but I will be with you. That’s why I don’t want you telling yourself that this, none of this, is your fault. Blink tries believing this but can’t quite get past the whole “if I didn’t get so stupid” phase out of her mind. Catherine: I’ve had this problem since I was a kid. Doctors tried figuring this whole thing out then and like now, they don’t know what’s wrong with me. Guess it’s my own fault, should have spent my spare time looking into this. I mean with you being the “chosen one” of us to compete, I certainly had a lot of it. Blink: Catherine. I’m--. Catherine: Hey, what did I tell you about whispering all the time? It gives you a bad impression, like you’re always keeping things to yourself. Besides, it wasn’t your fault to begin with. That’s another thing that annoys me about you, you’re always taking the blame for things and apologizing. You got chosen because I was reckless. In the end though, I was far happier just watching you. Got to know what it felt like to be a fan again. Helping you out, cheering you on, giving you a good smack upside the head whenever you needed it. Right now especially. Catherine takes a moment to examine Blinks features as though a little freaked out by them. Catherine: The look you’re giving me right now; stop it. Please… It can’t be helped on Blink’s end and it certainly now can’t be helped on Catherine’s as she repeats the same look of despair. Blink’s grip tightens as she stares back at Catherine who musters up enough strength to smile once more before mouthing something out. Catherine’s smile retains its warmness almost to the moment where her eyes slowly drift downward. Blink watches silently uncertain of what’s just happened until her grip loosens and Catherine’s hand falls limply over the side of the bed. |
