Daisuke Tanaka on the Two Mr. Blonds.

"I think that both interpretations of the character were, in a way, a reflection of the other. Mr. Blond was supposed to be drunk, stupid and vicious. Walker is naturally only the last of those, and I believe he saw the other two in Yamai. On the other hand, Yamai's Blond took a lot of the contempt Walker had for him. Sometimes, he managed to use it constructively; other times, less so."

Flashback to a few years ago: a young man is combing the entire backtage area of some small Japanese arena. The bleach-blond pompadour, the black silk robe, the Lucky Strike hanging out of the corner of his mouth, this is the original Mr. Blond. Taking the cigarette out of his mouth he calls out.

Mr. Blond: [Where are you, old man? We're up in five.]

Behind a door, not too far away, the sound of a flush. Then, someone fumbling with a lock and a somewhat younger, darker haired Katsuya Yamai almost falls out of a changing room. He looks like hell, and he smells of cheap beer. Wiping his mouth, he turns a bleary eye to Walker and mutters something.

Mr. Yamai: [Huh. Stagefright.]

Mr. Blond: [Huh.]

He is not convinced. With a roll of the eyes, and a barely disguised sneer, Blondie offers Yamai one of his cigarettes. Anything to disguise the smell.

Daisuke Tanaka on the Two Mr. Blonds.

"Of course, in the beginning, Walker only saw what Yamai had become. He had not seen Yamai as one of the young pioneers of a new, harder hitting, cleaner finishing and I suppose less American influenced style, as we had. To say that he started to see Yamai as the final version of the Mr. Blond character is wrong: he always did see him that way. However, as time went on, he did start to see some of the positive side."

Somewhere in the background, Sharp Dressed Man is blaring out; as the Blond Outlaws make their way back to the dressing room; Blondie as ever lighting up a smoke. He shoots Yamai a sideways glance, and with a note in his voice that's 90% grudging, 10% admiration, gives him a fairly backhanded compliment.

Mr. Blond: [You're quite a method actor.]

Still, this time, he's less put out when he offers a smoke across to his partner. Yamai snatches at it with a wry smile.

Mr. Yamai: [And you don't completely suck either.]
