“There are no failures - just experiences and your reactions to them.” We see this quote for a moment before we fade in on a shot of Darren Hayes, sitting on a steel chair near the ring. He hasn't left the ringside area since he arrived, and has really just been staring at the squared circle this entire time. This allows our intrepid interviewer Toby Bostock to make his way down to ringside as most of the stage and arena has been set up now, and he has a seat next to Darren. Since Darren really doesn't run Bostock off, in fact once he sees Bostock he sort of angles his body towards the interviewer, this allows him to get into his questions. Toby: "Darren, if you have some time I would like to talk to you about a few subjects, considering FIW.com users have said they really don't know that much about you. You've had a long career so far, and we were wondering if you would invite us into the past in that regard. How does that sound?" Darren: "Sure, man. Shoot." Darren sounds a little distracted still but I'm sure that'll pass. Talking about the old days helps Darren forget about the work he's gotta' do tonight, regardless of how important it is. Toby: "To start with, as you know Lee Mason said that he is not like any fighter you've ever faced. Lee also has the reputation around the locker room as being one of the hardest hitters in FIW. Darren, what's the hardest you've ever been hit?" Darren grins, thinking for a moment before he responds. Darren: "Japan, when I had only been wrestlin' for about three years. Wrestled this guy in Nagoya on the undercard, and since I wasn't watchin', he fires this straight kick and catches me right inbetween the eyes. Put me straight out, man. Next thing I know, I'm flat on my back in my locker room and the doc is trying to give me smelling salts. See, that's why I keep my head on a swivel ever since--not just 'cause of my neck, but because any time, anywhere, if someone hits you jus' right, they can drop you. Gettin' knocked out was jus' about the scariest thing that ever happened to me, but I'm a lot older and a lot wiser now and Lee ain't gonna' knock me out. Won't happen." Toby nods, writing notes busily down, not looking at Darren as he continues. Toby: "What about being submitted? Lee has a vast and very deadly array of submission holds, one of which he used to nearly become the Dual Crown Champion. Have you ever tapped out before, and how are you going to avoid Lee tapping you out during the Iron Man match tonight?" Darren nods solemnly, remembering that yes, this IS an Iron Man match. One home run kick is not going to get the job done. Darren: "Nah. I haven't tapped out yet. Been beat a lot but I never got submitted. I think it's honestly 'cause I put my foot through most guys' face before they get a chance to slap a hold on me. That an' I know how to counter a lot of holds even though I don't like doing much submission myself. Lee Mason's good, yeah, he's damn good. But he best make sure he's got me down an' out before he tries to tap me out 'cause I ain't gonna' give up easily. I haven't given up on a damn thing in my life an' I'm not gonna start now." Toby's getting a lot of good info--I don't think we've even seen the man's eyes considering he's been looking at his notebook this whole time. Toby: "Finally, how often have you been booked in Iron Man matches and what's your strategy when you are? Do you pace yourself, do you try to get a win quickly and make your opponent have to beat you twice to take a lead?" Darren scratches his chin. How best to answer this without alerting Lee Mason to his gameplan? He looks at Toby, ready to divulge..and grins with all the charisma of the class clown. Darren: "Let's just say, with all due respect Lee'll be able to tell ya' all about what I do in Iron Man Matches after I get through kickin' his ass. Lee Mason's a guy that if I knock him off, people are gonna' start payin attention to who I am and what I'm doin'. Do you really think I'm gonna' let this opportunity slip away? I've been talking about gettin' beat so much not to garner any sympathy but to show Lee Mason I learn from my mistakes. I get better every time I get shown the lights. And then I win more often than I lose. Simple as that. In this business, you turn your failures into successes. That's been me since day one." Darren leans forward in his chair now, being very emphatic with what he's saying, Toby setting his notes aside to listen to him more carefully. Darren: "He's got me for 15 minutes and when I get in there, I'm gonna' beat him every way I can think of until the time reaches zero. And when the match is over, I'm gonna' be back on the road to what I been busting my ass for since I came back. Leather an' gold, Toby. The Fighting Spirit Championship. Lee's gettin' taken out tonight." Darren pounds a fist into his hand as he says that, jumping up and rolling into the ring so he can start one more warmup session before his match. Toby decides to stick around with the cameraman, scribbling notes as Darren works out, and the scene fades to black. |
