We fade into an empty changing room, save for the presence of Xenia. It’s the ladies changing room, so there’s no Dimmu Borgir or an FIW interviewer. Xenia is sat on a bench, her fighting gloves down laying on her lap. Xenia: “I had fun last week. Gustav David Richlen is ripe to be reeled in like a fish on a hook, I enjoyed our back-and-forth on FIW’s twitter. I had fun watching Mercedes Blackwell squirm, not wanting to admit that she needed me as her tag team partner but at the same time not wanting to give up the opportunity of the Tag Titles. I had fun in the ring, showing Shaelin exactly what her place is. I had fun nailing Mercedes in the face with the ring bell… my personal prize.” I should say, she is dressed, in training attire. Long shorts and a loose-fitting t-shirt exposing one of those training bras underneath at the shoulder. Xenia: “This week isn’t about fun, it’s about what I deserve. It’s about the FIW Hellcats Championship. A title that has been held by Jaime Lee, Lara Toni, Bisenshi Sakura and Kenny Chennault. I know my history, I’ve been around this industry long enough and spent a long time watching from the sidelines desperate to get my shot not just in this company but at that title.” She leans her head back, remembering those times. All those days good and bad, as much as they have defined and turned her into the fighter she is at the present time, they’re long gone now. Xenia: “It’s my destiny. It’s the reason why I’m here. Call me a stupid bitch all you like, the Tag Titles can go take a running jump, I couldn’t care less about them. I’m here for one reason and one reason only, to be Hellcats Champion.” The determined competitor clenches her jaw, there’s no games, there’s no fun tonight. That was last week. This week is serious business, there’s the title at stake. Xenia: “Mercedes isn’t sure why Crystal hasn’t been nice to her but of course she makes sure that Crystal knows how much she respects her. I know why. It’s about disrespect. It’s about criticism and words that sting. It’s only in the heat of the moment that we find out who people really are. I showed respect to Crystal and I’ll continue to show respect to her. What was lost by people like Mercedes who had a problem with Crystal for shaking my hand is that the reason I had for doing that was a fair one. I don’t have a problem with somebody who looks in my eyes and who fights. That’s what Crystal did. Amongst everything else that was happening, she brought it and I’ve always relished that kind of battle.” It’s rare that a hint of emotion crosses Xenia’s face but this is one of those rare moments, although the emotion is indignation. Like a footballer pointing to a corner as he takes a penalty, Xenia shows her hand. Xenia: “I’ve beaten Mercedes Blackwell. I did it in the middle of the ring at Rise of a Legend. Everybody saw it. Now I’m coming for Crystal Blake. Not Mercedes, she’s a non-factor as far as I’m concerned. I want Crystal and I want to beat her in front of the world. It’s that word again, isn’t it? Respect. I don’t respect the Tag Titles. They mean nothing to me. I respect the lineage and the prestige of the Hellcats Championship.” She picks up one of her gloves, pulling it over her fingers to her wrist. Xenia: “Look around. There’s no Brittany, there’s no Sakura, there’s no Helena Handbasket. There’s not even a Jade Justice anymore. Marilyn Lee Cross is inconsistent, Rebel, Yuki Sakaraba and Shaelin are exactly where they should be in the tag team division, Trixie and Katriona are too new to be considered a threat.” The Original Vixen extends her arm, the one without the hand now wrapped in a glove and scratches three letters into her arm - C, M & X. They stay visible in a red glow just long enough for Xenia to make her point. Xenia: “Look at these three women. Mercedes Blackwell, Xenia and Crystal Blake. Which one of those three would you want to represent the Hellcats? Mercedes has been there before but she’s not one of those pioneers. She’s not going to be remembered in years to come as anything more than Johnny Amazing’s will-she/won’t-she arm candy. Crystal Blake will be respected for what she has accomplished, transitioning from her previous career as an entertainer and she has the rivalry, which she emerged victorious from, against Father Jakob Pike to hang her hat on.” She rubs her arm, the red lettering having disappeared. She picks up her second glove and starts to tug it on. Xenia: “I want you to take a good look at that poster with your face on it. Take it home with you, put it up on your wall. Bring it to Brittany and get her to sign it. That’s as close as you’ll ever going to get again.” Time to hit the gym, she slaps her hands together and knocks the camera aside. This means something to her. |
