We fade in on one half of the FIW World Tag Team Champions and prominent Coulter Crew elder, Clay ‘Chainsaw’ Krueger. He’s sat in a comfortable chair in a hotel room somewhere in Cardiff, most likely around the edge of Cardiff Bay. His title belt is somewhere off to the side, paced gently on a sideboard.

Clay: “Do you know, I don’t have a lot to say this week. I truly don’t. I feel… content. I am satisfied. I have no intentions or great expectations. I’ve been working hard, putting in the hours training with my new tag team partner. That’s what you do when you become Tag Team Champion on your first night together. Normally you’d have months, maybe even years of history behind you. You know their weaknesses, their strengths, their traits and their faults.

But I’ve been here before. On the first night I teamed with Keith Williams, Hollywood Chainsaw Massacre became the tag team standard bearers in FIW. Fast forward several years and I’m back in exactly the same position with Caleb Claudel so I’m all too familiar with the process.

It’s very difficult for me to explain. You work so hard to achieve something, in my case the record breaking sixth reign as FIW World Tag Team Champion, and then what? What comes next? Defending the titles, I hear you say. Only not this week.

At Anarchy in the UK, yes, I would expect to be defending the titles alongside my tag team partner Caleb Claudel. Prior to that, I am scheduled to compete in a 10-man tag team match pitting representatives of FIW against the Coulter Crew much like last week’s trios match.

I have been struggling with a concept and that concept is that I’m not sad to have lost the match last week. I don’t feel like I let myself down, I don’t feel like I could have done much more. It happened. Nothing I could do about it.

Some people on the roster have thoughts to remove others from professional wrestling or to cause embarrassment or seek revenge. I don’t particularly. Even in my dealings with the Alpha Wolves, I don’t especially feel threatened or motivated to cause them harm, I want to achieve my own goals and realise my ambitions.

I’ve been in this position before. Twice I’ve been Dual Crown Champion and twice I’ve sat that very night after winning it in a hotel room with the belts on my lap and wondered… so what next? It’s very much a case of ‘after the Lord Mayor’s show’.

So that all leaves me with a quandary. What do I tell you today? What do I tell you that you don’t already know?

You already know how this match will go. You know that the Coulter Crew will have superior teamwork and continuity, despite the presence of Shaelin and Gustav David Richlen as part of the opposition. You know that we’ll control proceedings with quick tags, good communication and maybe even some shady cheating to keep the advantage when the referee’s back is turned.

You know that we’ll isolate somebody, we’ll keep them far away from their teammates. Somebody like Shaelin or Dream, one of the weaker members of the team. You know eventually they’ll break through, they’ll bring Johnny Amazing or Keith Williams into the fray and all hell with break loose.

You were already aware of everything I’ve said, of course you were. The only problem is… that’s all you know. From that moment on, it’s anybody’s ballgame. That is that you don’t know. Nor do I, that’s what makes it so intriguing.

You think there’s nothing on the line, nothing at stake. Maybe there isn’t. There’s no title, there’s no butler responsibilities… but there is momentum to earn.

Going into a pay-per-view with all those clichés, the lights on bright and everything else that comes from clever marketing personalities. You need momentum, nobody wants to head into a match at a special event with a loss behind them. You might only be as good as your last appearance in this industry, I suspect there’s some truth to that.

That’s what gets me out of bed, what propels me out the door and into the gym. It’s what brings me to the arena every week, what I don’t know. That’s what wrestling is all about, even at my age.”

He stands from his chair and picks up his athletic bag. He slings the strap over his shoulder, taps his title belt with his palm before heading out into the world.
