Who iz dis Black Mage?
[ *  * ]
::Seated up on her bed inside of their shared hotel room, Courtney looks over her laptop resting, well, on her lap with a pillow hugged close against her chest. Her finger constantly taps the arrow key as she scrolls through a few images when Crystal steps inside the room closing up the door behind her.::

Crystal: “Hey.”

::Courtney looks up over her laptop and smiles briefly at the entrance of her friend watching as she drops down on her own bed looking too tired to move any further.::

Courtney: “Enjoyable run?”

Crystal: “Bleh. Remind me to set an all downhill run next time.”

::Courtney keeps her smile going as she checks back down over her screen.::

Courtney: “Think I'm ready to tell you.”

Crystal: “Hm?”

Courtney: “About Sean.”

::Crystal waits letting her mind try and catch up here.::

Crystal: “Your ex?”

::Courtney nods her head as Crystal slowly struggles in a shuffle to get herself up in a properly seated position against her own pillows.::

Courtney: “We met in high school, middle of eleventh grade. I was a bit on my guard at the time, what with wrestling being such a popular topic of discussion in the schools and my father being a trainer for it...I kinda felt that those who came to me only saw me as a door to my him. Obviously that failed to help my social life...but it was fine. I learned to live with it. Besides, I felt I was more friends with dad's students anyway. We shared a passion for the sport that was much different than what you'd find in the schools.”

::Courtney laughs a little as she grips the top of her lap top looking like she might close it.::

Courtney: “And I'm already rambling.”

Crystal: “It's okay. Not like I've plans, or even the means, to go anywhere.”

Courtney: “True. Well, anyway, one lunch period I'm sitting alone, per usual, and this guy comes up and sits down right across from me and just immediately breaks into wrestling talk. Like we had started two classes earlier and he was only picking up where we had left off. Naturally I assumed he either thought I was someone else or because my table was so secluded he was just recording for this podcast thing. I was getting set to leave when I heard him ask my opinion. I was just giving him his space so I wasn't paying attention, but after asking for a repeat I found he wasn't talking storylines or matches or favorite wrestlers, he was talking the technical aspects of certain moves. It wasn't “If I was a wrestler, I'd have this and this and this and those and that as my finisher”. It was just comparison talk. He wanted to know which moves I thought targeted the ligaments more. INSERT MOVES!!!”

Crystal: “I don't know what either of those are.”

Courtney: “It's okay, neither have a huge basis on the story anyway. But yeah, we just talked about that for a while and then went from there. We never discussed individual wrestlers, companies, matches, or even touring schedules. We just talked moves. I was so flabbergasted by it all I hadn't even thought he was maybe just trying to convince his way to meet my dad until after we were done. I was just having so much fun because I was afraid about talking it while at the same time was nervous over what people would want from me if we ever did.”

::Courtney shakes her head in disbelief of herself while Crystal remains silent.::

Courtney: “The next time we met though, I brought back my suspicions. I felt that at any moment he was going to ask about my dad.”

Crystal: “Did he?”

Courtney: “No. It's like he didn't even know who he was. Naturally, I was both relieved and agitated over this and, eventually, I couldn't stand it any longer and set up a meeting. I mean my dad was my hero and here we were talking the things he was doing and he wasn't even being put into the conversation!”

::Crystal giggles hearing that.::

Courtney: “What?”

Crystal: “I dunno. Just you agitated. It's funny. It's like “Oh no. Little yellow mouse thing, don't be upset.””

Courtney: “Pikachu.”

Crystal: “I know, I'm sorry.”

Courtney: “If you're sorry, then stop laughing.”

::She says but it isn't long until she too is laughing a little picturing a similar scene.::

Courtney: “That actually...thanks for that.”

Crystal: “You're welcome. Now, please continue, agitated yellow mouse.”

::Courtney smiles looking ready to throw her pillow, but gets back into the story instead.::

Courtney: “So the meeting was pretty basic, which was still better than what I thought it would be.”

Crystal: “You still weren't certain?”

Courtney: “No. I only knew him a week.”

Crystal: “A week?!”

::Crystal shouts finding the energy to sit up.::

Crystal: “It took you only a week to get that agitated?”

::Courtney just shrugs her shoulders.::

Courtney: “Like I said, my father's my hero.”

Crystal: “I guess...”

::Crystal lays back down ready to hear the rest.::

Courtney: “Anyway, they talked wrestling for a few hours. Ordinarily when he was talking to someone, he'd always keep an eye on the ring but for a few moments Sean managed to get his attention. So much so that he offered him a part time job running errands, cleaning the ring, handing out water and towels, bitch work pretty much.”

::Crystal has that look in her eye that suggests she knows all too well the details of that sort of job.::

Courtney: “My dad always liked to keep people like Sean as close to the gym as possible. He always looked for the spirit of someone first rather than how eager they were to get in the ring. Respect the craft. It was pretty much written on the walls. Until I had that sign made up to put on the wall.”

::She laughs quickly to herself.::

Courtney: “Over the next few months things seemed to be doing pretty good. Sean would come in, work, talk with my dad and some of the other wrestlers, he got a real education of how things worked in the wrestling business. He even brought his brother along one day. Ugh, I hated him even then.”

::Crystal doesn't need to ask because it's clear to her whom she's referring to.::

Courtney: “He just stood there like he didn't even want to be there, always watching Sean making certain he didn't leave his sight or whatever. When Sean did leave he did too and I was happier for it. Then, one day, Sean just...sort of changed.”

Crystal: “Changed?”

Courtney: “He seemed a lot more eager to get in the ring and learn a few moves. My dad always told him he couldn't because, as he was still in school, he didn't want to risk injury and have him miss out on all those classes. Unfortunately, that only worked on Sean for so long and he started pestering me to get him in there. I took my dad's side in that and, after a few arguments about it, we just...broke apart. Now, this is where Colin would say that it was because I didn't adhere to his requests that Sean did what he did. I still say Sean could have waited.”

Crystal: “What happened?”

Courtney: “He got himself in a ring.”

::Courtney falls silent for a bit before continuing.::

Courtney: “It was an independent promotion and from what I understood, they were running short of talent that night. Sean, who was there to watch the show to begin with, heard this and told them he had experience in the ring and so, trying to get a show on quickly, they put him out there. Against an old schooler in his late fifties.”

::Courtney's fists begin to tense up.::

Courtney: “Sean knew the moves, but he didn't know the bumps. He didn't know the ins and outs, he didn't know how to talk match design during the contest, the man thought Sean was being disrespectful and what does the old school mentality say about what to do with someone like that?”

::Crystal doesn't know.::

Courtney: “He beat Sean senseless. He began dropping him for real and, again, because Sean didn't know how to take any kind of bump...he got hurt. Beyond bad. Beyond worse.”

Crystal: “What happened?”

Courtney: “He got paralyzed from the neck down. I don't know what happened to Sean's opponent. I just know whatever decision he made that night kept him from the ring since. But that was little compensation for what happened to Sean. I wanted to talk with him after that, I wanted to help him, but he didn't want anything from me. He didn't want anything from wrestling.”

Crystal: “I'm sorry.”

::Courtney nods fighting back her tears.::

Courtney: “Thanks.”

::Courtney continues to sit there as Crystal soon brings herself over close enough to her friend for a hug.::

Crystal: “No. Thank you. For taking the chance with me with all that's happened.”

::Crystal tightens up the hug some as Courtney soon brings a hand up along her students back.::
