Conference Realignment

Rumor has it the the Aggies are trying to join the Southeastern Conference. The SEC votes on it today. The question is, does the SEC want more teams, and if they do, who will be their fourteenth team?
Assuming they do accept Texas A&M, what team would be the fourteenth? Florida State says they are not opposed to the idea. Clemson has also been talked about. If they are to take an ACC team, Florida State is the most competitive.
What does anyone else think?

Also, as a side note, if this move does happen, the "Big 12" may steal Houston from Conference USA to maintain ten teams. The ACC may also steal West Virginia from the Big East.

Well, the SEC voted not to let them out, but it sounds like they are leaving the door open. However, A&M may try to shove their way in.

This is now the conference realignment thread. To bring up to speed:

Texas A&M was accepted by the SEC but their future is up in the air as Baylor threatens to sue if they leave the Big 12.

Oklahoma has expressed interest in leaving for the Pac-12. They have not officially attempted to withdraw from the Big 12 but they are expected to.

Texas met with them recently to try to dissuade their departure. Oklahoma reconfirmed that they want to leave. Oklahoma is expected to apply for the Pac 12 with Oklahoma State soon.

The Pac 12 is not necessarily open to 16 teams so they may stop with those two.

There are preliminary reports that Texas is having talks with the ACC. They may go there with Texas Tech.

The Big East has mentioned that they may accept Kansas, Kansas State, and Missouri to reach 12 teams.

Here's an interesting quote from the Statesman:

Quote:

"OU's board of regents had instructed school President David L. Boren to prepare a document to formally apply for admission to the Pac-12, a source close to the situation said. There's nothing Texas could have offered Oklahoma that would have changed their mind.
They were set on leaving the Big 12 before Texas got there," a well-placed source at a Big 12 school said, adding that Sunday's meeting had a very friendly and cooperative tone. "The Big 12's done. Oklahoma wasn't open to creating Big 12 stability."

and

Quote:

"Asked if Scott would seek authorization from his school's presidents to offer the two Oklahoma schools, the source said, "I think he'd recommend they take them. The SEC sees the future, and if the Pac-12 doesn't move now, they'd miss out on an opportunity to get one of the most storied football programs in the country and the current No. 1 team in the nation."

What are your thoughts on all the theories of the super conferences?

Speaking of the topic, Pittsburgh and Syracuse reportedly joining the ACC.

^You're right,

This one comes out of left field for me. I'm not sure how it fits in with the other alignment issues, is Texas still coming to the ACC?

USA Today reported early Sunday that the ACC presidents had already voted on Saturday morning to accept Syracuse and Pittsburgh to the league. Citing an anonymous source, the newspaper said the ACC was still considering adding two other East Coast teams and that Connecticut and Rutgers would be the candidates.

The ACC is throwing this together in order to save themselves before everybody else is picked. Never expected the ACC to be the first 16 team conference. With all the instability all it takes is one member to go nuts like this to set off a chain reaction.

Whoops didn't see this topic thanks for merging it. The Pitt/Syracuse is puzzling to me because it almost dissolves the Big East as the power basketball conference and gives that title to the ACC. It doesn't seem like the move has much to do with football, as when we think of perennial powerhouses Syracuse and Pittsburgh don't really come to mind.

I know, I think the Big East is being as complacent as the Big 12 is. :duno:
