Inchon International Airport; Seoul, South Korea
Date: January 6th, 2013
Time: 04:40 ZULU

Brigadier General Maxwell Thompson stood on the tarmac of Inchon International Airport hands clasped behind his back as he watched one of the first M1A1 AIM Tanks be unloaded from a RAAF C-17 Globalmaster. All over the airfield soldiers of his battlegroup were moving off similar aircraft as they deployed the capital of South Korea. Maxwell pulled his jacket close as a gust of cold wind came across the airfield and shook his head at this new war. His battlegroup had been planning to take over the Peacekeeping operations in East Timor when the North Korean's decided to change all that with their attack across the DMZ. Now only about 50 kilometers separated his unit from the North Korea's advance.

"General Sir, my battalion has finished unloading and is ready to deploy forward" Lieutenant Colonel Jonathon Powers, command of the 1st Battalion, Royal Australian Regiment, said walking up and saluting his commanding officer.

"Very good Jon. I want you to go ahead and deploy forward with our first elements. I'll push forward the rest as soon as they are unload. The 5th's Blackhawks at waiting for you by terminal three. We will just have to shuttle your battalion forward though I am going to talk to the South Korean's about giving us some transport to help get us up their quicker."

"Aye Sir. What's the name of the village again? I want to located on my GPS."

"Goyang-ri, at the base of the Bukhan Mountains. You should be able to find it pretty easy."

"Right-o sir. Anything else?"

"Yes." Maxwell put out his hand and shook Jon's. "Keep your ass down, alright?"

Jon chuckled as nodded to the General. "Don't worry sir. I won't have that happen again."

Maxwell grinned and nodded as the young man moved off towards his assembling battalion. He had served with Jon in the first deployment of Australian troops into East Timor back in 1999, where a spent bullet had hit Jon in butt after a firefight and he had to be evacuated. A loud rumble was heard as another of the large C-17s landed on the tarmac bringing in more of the ANZAC Battlegroup Broadsword.

Maxwell turned and began making his way towards his South Korean Liaison officer to try and get more transport for his unit.

Goyang-Ri, ROK Army Observation Post

"General. Message from command, sir." The Sergeant manning the comms said, handing over a dispatch. Brigadier General Bak Li-Chun looked at it.

1. Allied reinforcements arriving. ETA: within the hour, possibly. Attempting to expedite.
2. Enemy forces delayed at Bunsu-ri, but resuming advance. ETA: 45 mins to hour.

He handed back the paper and picked up his binoculars, looking out at the lightly snowed valley ahead of him.

"Are all the guns in place?" Bak asked.

"Yes, sir. Killzones have been zeroed in, and all batteries report ready." The Sergeant replied.

"Good. And the rearm/refuel point?"

"Set up behind the mountain."

"Excellent."

Back at Inchon, the Australians are informed that while most assets are being tied up elsewhere, the ROKAF's 7 HH-47D Chinooks with the 235th Combat Search & Rescue Squadron are immediately available to airlift troops and equipment, with ROKA helicopter squadrons being checked for priority to get more sent their way.

Lieutenant Colonel Jonathon Powers jumped down from the S-70A-9 Blackhawk and moved quickly off towards what he assumed was a large school. As he cleared the landing area he glanced around and grinned to himself as he watched the soldiers of Task Group Bravo moved about to secure the area. Off in the distance the rumbling of artillery could be heard, making it all to clear to why the Australians were here.

"Major Brannon! I want you to leave a platoon here to secure the landing zone. I want a two sections along with one of the AT Sections to head to get moving towards the road tunnel so we can at least secure that for the time being. Deploy the rest of your company towards Highway 39."

"Aye Sir! 1st Platoon secure the area! Second Platoon and Third move to the school for further orders! Lets move chaps!" Major Richard Brannon said, yelling out orders as he moved.

Jonathon nodded to himself seeing everything was in order and began moving to find the ROK Army command post so that he could report in and see what all the ROK's had in the area.

"Sir seven ROK CH-47s just arrived to give us transport support, I recommend we send a couple of our HMMWVs up to Colonel Power's postion to act as a forward recon element." Warrant Officer First Class Samuel Twiddle said, looking over to the General who was sitting in one of the Headquarter's HMMWVs.

"Good. That will help out a bunch. How soon until the 5th can return?"

"Last reports say they are just landing now so I say about ten minutes sir."

"Right. I want to get our Armor moving as well. Put them on route 6 and they can link up with route 39 around Gyesan. From there they can head straight to Goyang-Ri. We can also send the Task Group Victor with our artillery and other support elements. I figure it should, hopefully, take around 45 minutes for them to arrive." Jon said, looking up from the laptop in his lap.

"Right sir, if you will excuse me. Oh sir. What about Task Group Charile?" The Sergeant asked before he moved off.

"I'll put them on the CH-47s along with a couple of units of the Recon Platoon. I also want to send some of the engineers up to assist the Colonel up in Goyang-Ri."

"Aye sir. I will report back once the 1st Armored is moving."

"Very good Sergeant. I'll be here. Captain Cirhe! You have a moment?" Jon asked as he spied Captain Benjamin Cirhe, commander of A Troop, 1st Aviation Regiment.

"Only for you General sir and no one else." Cirhe chuckled as he moved over and saluted the General. "How can I help you?"

Jon returned the salute and moved the laptop so that both men could see it. "I want you to send you Tigers up to support our forward elements at Goyang-Ri. I figure that this tunnel can actually work for us in that it will be a great place for you to put your helicopters in a support role."

"Hrm.. actually looks perfect. I can also send a couple out further to act as a early warning system."

"Do it. I am sending a couple units of the 1st RAR's recon platoon as well so that will give us two groups out to give us a warning."

"Right-o sir. If you please I shall be going, very busy I am!" Cirhe shot off a salute and began running to his Six Tiger's sitting on the tarmac.

Jon chuckled to himself and hoped that the young man's cheery attitude would hold at the end of the day...

Goyang-Ri, Bukhan Mountains, South Korea

Powers did not have to look far, as General Bak was waiting for the Australians as they arrived at the village.

"Welcome, Colonel. I am Brigadier General Bak Li-Chun, Capital Corps. I am pleased to see you have decided to join our little party in the mountains." General Bak said, forgoing saluting for all the obvious reasons, and speaking in educated English, though clearly it was taught by an American.

"We have set up numerous guns and mortars in the mountain range, aimed at the rest of the highway east of us. I'm afraid that once the 820 Armored breaks the holding attempt further north, there is little stopping them until they reach this highway. We hold the position they would like to use, as this mountain would make an excellent vantage point for any siege on Seoul." Bak explained.

"Because of your unit's size, it would be best if you were on the highway itself, though I see you are already doing that. My two Infantry divisions will be working on either side of you, north and south of the highway. And we will most certianly have some degree of air support. We are facing a heavy number of tanks here. But they are foolish by confining themselves to such narrow quarters, as it negates any sort of advantage they could exploit."

"However, I am not going to start deluding myself with visions of grandeur yet, Colonel. If you have any questions, I hope I can answer them before you and your men are forced to meet our...heh...wayward cousins."

The hum of helicopter blades could be heard as the first of seven CH-47s came within view at Landing Zone Bravo, which the Goyang-Ri School area had been classified. They came in quickly and after a couple of minutes another several hundred soldiers were on the ground. Colonel Powers stood outside of the school as the troops deployed with a couple of staff officers moving about setting up a command post. A young man came running up to the Colonel and gave a quick salute. "Sir, Task Group Charlie reporting in."

"Major Yuzbeck good. Come in side and I'll show you were I want you to deploy."

"Aye Sir." Both men then moved into the school and walked down a corridor to what, until recently, had been the school's offices. Now it was the tactical headquarters of Task Force Broadsword. Jon moved over to a map that had very recently been put up of the surrounding area, having been liberated from the school's library. "I moved a platoon of Bravo over to cover the Bukhan Tunnel, I want you to take your company and take over from them. You will be able to use the terrain to your advantage as well have support from our Tiger gunships, which are setting up just behind you where the tunnel runs outside for a bit."

"Any other support sir?" Major Alfred Yuzbeck asked.

"We have several brigades worth of artillery in support from the ROKs and our own forces should be here in about half an hour. I'll also give you a section of the 110th AD Battery so you have anti-air support if needed. Hopefully our own airforce will be here soon."

"Roger that sir. Might also have a section of the Engineer Platoon? Might help us deny the tunnel to the North Koreans."

Jon grinned to himself and nodded. "Sounds good Al, oh I am also moving a couple recon sections out before your company so keep an eye out ofr them. Alright that's all I got for you for now. Good hunting."

"Thank you sir. You as well." Major Yuzbeck saluted and made his way out of the office area.

Jon let out a small sigh and wondered how long it would take before his soldiers were under fire..

Brigadier General Maxwell Thompson shook the hand of Colonel Powers as he walked into the headquarters that Powers had set up in a Korean school. "So Jon we all set?"

Lieutenant Colonel Jonathon Powers nodded slowly. "As best as we can be sir. I have both Task Groups digging in, one at the mountain tunnel and the other along Highway 39 and have a couple of scout units out ahead of of our main units to give us a early warning."

"Good. You have your Javelin's set up as well?"

"Yes sir. I also have the engineers laying what mines they can though I was just about to call them back in as we just got a message from the Koreans that the other blokes should be here in about ten minutes."

"Well good thing we got the whole unit up here then. I'll send a Troop each to both Task Groups to give them a bit more killing power. I'll the rest of the Squadron here and link them with the 3/4th Cavalry to give us a strong reserve if we need to pull any holes."

Jon nodded. "Sounds good sir. Also I recommend we move Victor Company up to the Highway line as well. I bet that's where they will make their main push."

"I already ordered Captain Edwards to deploy up there before I came in. He should be in position in a couple of minutes."

Jon chuckled and nodded. "Well then sir I am going to see to the deployments."

"Alright Jon. Good Luck and God speed." Maxwell gave his very best salute and let the younger man head out to finish up the last minute deployments..

Goyang-Ri, Bukhan Mountains; South Korea
January 6th, 2013
05:35 ZULU

As the Korean People's Army closed on the junction where Highways 78, 315 and 39 met at Goyang-dong, it sounded like the mountains themselves had roared in anger with the sounds of the South Korean guns and rocket artillery firing. Yet it seemed that the commander of the hostile force was absolutely hell bent on breaking through to Seoul, breaking off a Division's worth of forces east to Goyang-ri, only to run into another Infantry Division holding at Jangheung-myeon.

The South Koreans held their land valiantly, trying desperately to keep their capital safe from the invaders, and the support of their artillery and now arriving Cobra gunships were certianly making sure the North Koreans paid for their advances with their lives.

The ANZAC force almost seems to be left out until the radios come to life. 51st Infantry reports that a battalion sized force of armor, possibly T-62s, have raced right through the lines, and are closing on their position. The force will be on the road north of Victor, otherwise they will run straight into Bravo.

And now, it was Broadsword's first catch of the day.

--Closing on engagement zone:
Lead elements, U/I Armor Battalion (Primarily T-62, may be Type-88s or Chonmaho. Support vehicles include BMP-1s. Infantry have not dismounted their vehicles yet.) [40 MBTs, 6 BMP-1s]

Goyang-Ri, Bukhan Mountains; South Korea
Date: January 6th, 2013
Time: 05:40 ZULU

"Thirty to Forty Tangos reported broken through. Get your Company into the houses at the north end of town. I am pulling Task Group Paratus up the road to assist you. I am also getting what I can from the ROKs in terms of artillery to rain down on their bloody heads." General Thompson said into the mic he held in his hand as he redirected the deployment of his battlegroup. With the breakthrough in the ROK 51st Division's front his rear was now un-hinged and he had to plug the gap.

"Roger that Broadsword Six, redeploying now. Will hold until Paratus can get up here. Castle Victor Six out" came the reploy the Thompson from Major Thomas Ricker, commander of Victor Company, 1st Battalion, Royal New Zealand Infantry Regiment.

"Major Parks! Get on the horn and have the 4th fire everything they have on the incoming North Korean's and then get the ROK's on the horn as well and tell them I want a couple minutes concentration on them and then they can redirect their fire." Maxwell said turning to look at his chief of staff.

Major George "Pip" Parks nodded to the General as he moved away from the map he was looking at and moved to an open radio. "Boardsword Four to Lavarack. Fire mission, ToT on Bravo Concentration 1.1.R. burst fire. Repeat Burst Fire."

"Boardsword Four, Lavarack Five confirms. ToT on Bravo Concentration 1.1.R burst fire. Rounds out in one mike" came the reploy of over the radio from the 4th Field Regiment. George then quickly switched channels to the ROK Army's artillery and transmitted once more. "Broadsword Four to ROK Fire Brigade requesting ToT on Bravo Concentration 1.1.R, two mike burst requested then free bird. Over."

Maxwell, satisfied that the Major had the artillery in hand changed channels himself and contacted both Task Group Paratus and Task Group Tiger and had them redirect their efforts to assault and destroy the NKPA armour penetration heading towards his rear. He then quickly changed gears and got on the radio to get in contact with the last element of his command, the RAAF units deployed to Korea...

Goyang-ri, South Korea
1/6/2013, 0545 Zulu

The North Korean tanks rumbled up the highway, and they were greeted by Australian and South Korean artillery rounds, mortar shells and Australian anti-tank rockets. Explosions halted the advancing North Korean tanks, which slowed down and spread out. The Australian Tigers did not have any reports of anti-aircraft weapons locking onto them, though the tanks did start firing their anti-aircraft pintel-mounted machine guns. The surviving 4 BMP-1s dismounted their infantry, and the group of North Korean armor was temporarily halted by the supressing artillery.
