Unlimited Broadband; its not what it says on the tin

We have been cable customers for over 10 years and found out something today thats a bit of a shock and to be honest i am not well pleased

we are with Virgin, and have the XL TV package with Broadband 10 mg and phone line

the monthly cost before and phone calls are £41

we decided to down size because we dont watch half of the TV channels so hubby phoned up to ask them to put us on freeview with the phone and Broadband the same, after three attempts to get them to understand as there as thick as they come, we sorted out a new package and saved £10 per month

But we were shocked to be told we were being speed trafficed, which means if we go over 3 meg a day they cut the speed by half to make sure we dont slow anyone else down in the area .. we have my PC plus my son has his PC my daughter has a Laptop.. and even my sons PS3 is effected when he plays games, my daughter hada Ipod touch for Christmas which also effect the usage .. my hubby was told we are using approc 120 meg a month, so in effect going over the allowed usage of 90 meg

my complaint is how can they advertise it as unlimited broadband when they cut your speed by half if you go over this 3 meg a day, that to me is very missleading

we often find our PC crawling and now we know why

Back in October, in order to save a few quid a month, I cancelled my TV package so that I just have the phone and broadband now. It's not much, but it saves me £10 a month, but it's not affected the speed on my broadband at all.

The best thing you could do is phone and say that if they don't offer you a better deal, you're going to change your supplier. If they don't comply, then cancel with them, then the day after renew your contract with them as a new customer. This usually works.

Mollie it stinks hubby did say that about starting as a new customer but they told him its not possible unless we have a 12 month break... i am really p**** of with them.

they say we are using more than the 90 meg a month allowed, before they slow you down .. but they dont tell you that when you sign up, although the operator told hubby it was in the terms and conditions

so when they advertise they should say unlimited up to 90 meg a month
then we cut your speed in half ..but that wont happen

the operator said other broadband providers charge if the customers go over

I have a very long story to tell about this, and it's a bit late in the night to tell it but, the bones of it was, that a few years ago we decided to give up Virgin and go with Sky, but we had to have a BT line put in to do that for the broadband. This was arranged, but BT didn't show up on the date arranged. Meanwhile we'd cancelled with Virgin so we were offline for a couple of days.

On the night that the BT engineers were due to come that afternoon I rang them starting from 6 p.m. and left the phone ringing and at 7.45 (almost two hours later) it cut off not having been answered. Following that, once a month when I got home from work there was a card put through my door by a BT engineer saying he couldn't gain access to carry out the work, and would I phone on a (mobile) phone. This was from September to March!!! Yeah, right!

I will let you see the letter tomorrow that I sent to BT following that, but a day or so after we re-entered a new contract with Virgin as new customers, they cut our bill down on a new package.

You'll love the letter I sent to BT! Am good at doing letters, I yam! Nay, I is excellent! :E:

I've just checked in My Documents and surprisingly I've kept the email I sent to BT and the letter as well. :snicker:

Must admit I've had a bit of a chuckle about what I sent them which I will post tomorrow night. Thing is, you have to cancel your contract with Virgin before they'll give you a new package - because they want to keep you as a customer. You may have to do that and be offline for a day or so. This is what we did, and it paid off.

what gets me is how these people can lie saying you cannot cancel and start a new contract stinks....but we were given three differant prices today to reduce the package .. we have a HD V+ BOX which we paid for on a so called one payment which cost £50.. it was adverised that you would not pay anymore mothly fees

Now we are told that if we down size we have to pay £5.50 per month to use the HD and Record option :banned: :banned:
