I just wondered if anyone knew if there was/is a law on the height of trees in your garden

Its a long story and it involves the Neighbour from hell
because of this person we planted evergreen trees on what is our boundary to block them off completely

Well short story this person has been round and demanded we cut down the trees because she claims she has no sunlight in her garden and its damp all year round and the garden is full of mushrooms

Apart from that being utter rubbish, she has said thee is a law called "right to light" and if we don't cut them down she will report us

Now I am not a rebel .. No I really mean that, she is a total bitch and thinks everyone has to do her bidding

I am unable to go on Google to try and find out if you can be made to cut down trees so was wondering if anyone knows about this law she state exists

Now then Pam, you will have to get in touch with your local government as regards this as there are bye-laws, and each town has their own. There is such a thing as a right to light and, if your trees are blocking natural sunlight into her garden, then she may have a genuine complaint. I thought a right to light was regarding building actual structures which blocked out light, so I'm unsure about trees.

However, if your trees are bending over into her garden (depending on what sort of trees they are) she has every right to cut them back, but it does depend on the height.

Find your local council on the internet and there will be a section about this. It matters not whether you're in council accommodation or private, the bye-laws will remain the same. Get in touch with the council.

the trees are not bending over and she is a total control freak and expects everyone to do what she wants, she has already upset others on the street but regardless of that i think she is just trying to invent her own laws

I have no problem in her cutting any hang on her side but she wants us to reduce the hight i wont post what Alan told her to do

Like I said Pam, and I'm definitely not siding with your neighbour, but she may have a valid complaint so check your local bye-laws. On the left of me here they have Cypress trees way in excess of 30ft, but they don't block my sunlight but, if they did, I'd have kicked up a fuss if my back garden was in complete shade because of them. Check out the bye-laws.
