Pam, if you think those are long hours, consider this. During WW2, the normal shift for a coal miner was 14 hours, 6 days a week...in comparison to that, we dont know we are born.... |

Yes, but, Ann is 64 years old and looking after three school-age children, not to mention a spirited dog. I don't know how she does it. It's not normal for a woman of that age to work those hours. Respect to her. |

Mollie, in 1944, my grandad was 60 years old, working those hours on the coal face, and also had children at home...it was a three shift system as well. How many jobs in todays world can be compared in a fair manner to that? |

My Dad worked down the face of the coal mines in the 50/60. This gave him Lung cancer and breathing problems. Which most miners suffered from. :( That's long hours Ann, it's hard work looking after grandchildren too. You deserve a good break. Hope your children appreciate you. |

Blue those aren't her grandchildren. She's a working nanny to them as her lady boss is a solicitor whose husband works as well. It's a long way for Ann to go to get there and back so it's no wonder she's exhausted. She does love it though. Bee, my grandfather also worked down the mine in the 30s, 40s and 50s and there was no harder job. I don't think there can be a comparison because men usually are much stronger physically than women. As I've never worked down the mine, nor babysat three children and a daft dog for 12-13 hours a day, I bow to greater knowledge of these things. :E All I do know is that at approaching 62, there's no way I could have continued to work full time after 45 years of it, and I'm only glad that I'm now able to just work part-time. :D |
