Fiver smiled when Gray offered his help in expanding the warren. When it came to digging, it wasn’t often occurrence to see a buck be so eager to help with the work. He remembered how hard had it been to convince Bigwig, Hawkbit and Dandelion to start digging and it had taken winning in Bobstone match against the lion-maned rabbit. Fiver glanced aside at Bigwig, wondering if Captain of Watership Down Owsla was still suspecting some foul play on his part in that game…

He turned his gaze to Inle-thay. He sensed other rabbit’s anxiety, although he was hiding it well. Perhaps Gray wasn’t very keen on being center of so many rabbits attention?

“Come with me, Gray. I’ll show you around the warren,” Fiver said, nodding his head at red-eyed rabbit to follow him. He headed for the closest entrance to the warren. “We can go to where others are digging or, if you’re tired, I can lead you to my burrow.”

Gray nodded happily to fiver and followed him towards the entrance, he felt a little more relaxed as there weren't as many rabbits watching him, when he heard Fiver's words and the choice he could make he took a short moment before responding, "As much as I wanna help right now I think I might need a little rest first, wouldn't want me digging badly."

Arkose threw another glance at Campion. "Same as with every other prisoner I'm brought - take you to the hollows where prisoners are kept. From there, I generally let Spartina and the others decide what's to be done."

„Very well,” Fiver said to Gray, leading him to his burrow. It wasn’t easy getting through tunnels, since they were crowded with Efrafans, who had to sleep in corridors as there weren’t enough burrows. Despite the difficulty, Fiver and Inle-thlay finally arrived at former’s burrow.

“Forgive me for bedding, Gray,” Fiver said with embarrassed flick of an ear, looking at less than pristine lair. “So much has happened lately, so I haven’t got the time to change it.”

Scoria was resting on the top of high pile of tires, watching her surroundings absentmindedly. This was a relatively peaceful part of Darkheaven and so she could memorize the newest lesson of the Speaker of the Past without anybody disturbing her.

With her light-brown fur and slim body she was fairly pretty for Darkheaven standards, which meant there were quite a few bucks who were willing to mate with her. Of course, since she was the Speaker’s student they couldn’t just challenge her to single combat and win her “favour” through force. No, they had to use subtler methods. Unfortunately Darkheaven bucks were severely lacking when it came to subtlety, so their attempts at courting her had been more annoying than flattering.

In this place though, a fair distance from the battle pit, she could have a few moments of peace and quiet. Those who went this way and that way down below would have a hard time noticing her up here. At the same time she could observe the happenings in the warren…

Like this one.

She saw Arkose leading a pair of strangers: one dark-brown buck and one bluish-gray doe. That picked up Scoria’s interest. Despite the fact that Darkheaven rabbits had been patrolling all areas surrounding their warren, it wasn’t an often occurrence for them to capture and bring back hlessil. The newcomers usually brought with them new stories, which Scoria had to learn, as it was her duty as a student of the Speaker of the Past. In addition, strangers could sometimes make a few changes in established hierarchy of Darkheaven Warren, which was another reason to get to know them better.

Scoria stood up and moved down the pile, jumping smoothly from one tire to another. Once at the bottom, she hopped in trio’s way.

“Hello, Arkose. You’re bringing in new prisoners?” she asked with a smile.

He nodded. "Indeed," he told her. Of all the rabbits in Darkhaven, he actually didn't dislike Scoria. She was more level-headed than most. "Spartina picked 'em up. The one is in awful odd shape - collapsed on us once or twice. Anyway, I have no orders, so speak with them as you please."

Campion bit down on the side of his mouth and looked sideways at Blackberry. They must keep their cool. "I'm perfectly fine now, thank you," he said politely. Yes, he thought he'd better make a change before he got a bad reputation. It wasn't for his sake, but Blackberry's. He didn't know what to make of the new doe. He just couldn't believe she was from the same warren as the others.

Blackberry studied the other doe. She did seem different from Spartina's patrol, and even from Arkose, although he was nice enough. She decided it wouldn't hurt to try making friends with her, although it had seemed to annoy Campion when she tried it with Arkose. But if they didn't make friends, one or both of them was likely to end up in a very tight spot, if Spartina was any example of a typical Darkhavener. And Campion didn't seem like the easily friendly type, although she could be wrong about that. She decided to risk it. "I'm Blackberry," she said, "I think he really will be all right now." "Hopefully," she thought. "A lot has happened these last few days."

Scoria looked from buck to doe, inspecting them intently. When she saw him from up-close, she noticed that the dark-brown rabbit had terrible injuries on the left side of his face. She almost asked “who or what, in Frith’s name, did that to you?!”, but she bit her tongue in time. It wouldn’t do to aggravate at the very beginning someone, who could someday become a potential ally to her. Assuming he would live long enough to be of any use to anybody, that is. Right now this buck didn’t seem to be in good condition, but that might be only temporary. Maybe Spartina and her patrol had beaten him a bit in order to bring him to Darkheaven? That would explain his weak state, although not his face.

Now she focused on the doe, who had (unlike the buck) given Scoria her name. Blackberry. This female seemed liked the sort, who would have a hard time trying to fit in Darkheaven. To be fair, few outsiders had ever had an easy time here, unless they had been good warriors and Blackberry didn’t look much like a warrior. In comparison to most rabbits of Darkheaven she was… soft. And being soft was a dangerous quality to have in the warren like this. Scoria was pretty certain, that Blackberry was going to need a lot of help with getting accustomed to the life in this place. On the other paw, if she became another student of the Speaker of the Past, then she would be protected by Darkheaven law and she wouldn’t be bound by code of battle... And she would probably be grateful to the rabbit, who helped make it happen. "Yes… She could become a useful ally," Scoria thought.

“Hello, Blackberry,” Scoria said with friendly smile. “And hello to you, stranger,” she added, looking at the buck, who hadn’t revealed his name yet. “My name is Scoria and I’m student of the Speaker of the Past. To put it simply, I am a storyteller. As newcomers you must have many questions about Darkheaven and I’ll be happy to answer them." She paused before adding: "Then again, you look like you could use some rest more than a talk right now, so…” she trailed off, stepping aside to let them go where Arkose had been taking them before she stopped them.

It was more than just a polite gesture. They really looked tired, especially the buck. Hadn’t Arkose said this stranger had collapsed once or twice? As Scoria gazed upon him, she could believe that had happened, even though he was acting like he was perfectly fine.

Arkose nodded. It wasn't like he couldn't really tell what Scoria was up to, but he couldn't say or do anything about it - and why would he? Arkose, rather like Scoria in her own private thoughts, believed that Blackberry had little chance of not ending up forcibly becoming the mate of some brute if she didn't have help, and if Scoria helped her, surely the slender brown doe could make use of the favor.

Arkose, however, had no reason to think ahead in many ways. He had a few good years of strength ahead of him, and didn't need a favor from Blackberry or whoever. Campion, however, seemed to have been rather a strong kind of a buck, if not for his current condition. Useful as an ally, perhaps, but Arkose didn't care too much. Who knows, though, the lionhead thought. Perhaps if I bend a rule or two in his favor I'll end up in a good place for myself.

"Right. This way, then," he shook his mane, gesturing toward the prison. Once he led the pair into the den, he yanked the large towel off his back and dropped it unceremoniously onto the ground. "Build a nest, have yourself a litter, whatever you'd like - but there will be no escape, I assure you." He flicked his ear, glancing at the two.

"Thanks for the permission," Campion said nonchalantly to hide his embarassment. "Why can't we leave? Who is it that wants to stop us?

Scoria looked after Arkose and two newcomers, before she headed for Chief Rabbit’s burrow. Spartina would probably be there by now, informing Granite-rah about doe and buck she had captured. Scoria was curious what leader of Darkheaven was going to do about those two. Normally, a buck would be forced to fight in the battle pit for his place and rank in the warren, but this dark-brown buck didn’t seem like he was likely to win against anybody in his current state. Granite might make him fight anyway though. After all, Darkheaven wasn’t a place for the weak.

As for Blackberry, she wasn’t a warrior type, so she wouldn’t receive the gift of battle or at least it was very unlikely she would. Maybe Granite will decide to leave her to her own devices or maybe not. Either way, Scoria was going to find out.

When Scoria arrived at the entrance to Chief’s burrow, she stopped to sniff. She could smell Granite’s and Spartina’s scent, so they were inside. "Let’s look, if I can hear anything," she thought. Luckily nobody guarded this place, since leader of Darkheaven was expected to take care of his own protection, so it meant Scoria could be eavesdropping freely for the time being…

"We'll be alright on our own now," Campion hinted to Arkose. When he looked at him, he though friend or enemy? To him, Arkose just ignited agitation, but that didn't mean his opinion could change. After all, he brought them here to rest when he could have literally kicked him into a battle pit. Campion knew about this place from what the Black Rabbit had told him.

"Blackberry, how are you feeling?" Worridly, he gestured for her to make herself comfortable on their only nest. "It must be overwhelming leaving home and coming here. I need to tell you my plan, but first of all, are you sure you don't want to leave? You've seen how things work here."

"I'm all right," Blackberry said, careful to keep her voice from shaking. She was most definitely not okay, but she couldn't tell him that. Even if he tried to get her out of Darkhaven, it would only end in being recaptured, and their new guard could be someone far worse than Arkose. "I don't want to leave if you don't," she told Campion, "Tell me your plan, I'm afraid I've already made a mess of it."

Spartina stormed out of Granite's burrow, extremely angry with everyone, mostly herself and Granite. She had said that the new buck wasn't well enough to fight, and what does Granite say? Put him in the battle pit anyways, him or the doe, it has to be one or the other. And after that, he left it to her to figure out what to do. "Idiot, Frithing stupid..." Spartina stopped abruptly as she noticed Scoria. She didn't know the other doe very well, but seeing her gave Spartina an idea. Scoria was smart, maybe she could convince Granite to change his mind.
"Hello, Scoria," she said moodily, "What are you doing all the way over here?"

“Hello, Spartina,” Scoria said, giving the other doe an inquiring look. A moment ago the latter had appeared to be furious at something (or perhaps with somebody) and now she was trying to hide it under calm exterior. It was too late for that though.

“Oh, you know. I was trying to listen in on your talk with Granite-rah,” Scoria admitted casually. There was no point in denying that she had been eavesdropping, because Spartina wouldn’t believe that she just happened to be near Chief’s burrow by pure accident. Anybody, who had been able to keep herself near the top in Darkheaven as long as Spartina, would be too smart to be fooled by this sort of blatant lie. Besides… A bit of honesty might convince Spartina to tell her about their leader’s decision on what to do with Blackberry and the buck.

“So… May I ask you, what Granite is going to do with that pair of outsiders?”
