Gray looked at the efrafans that were filling the tunnels, he wasn't expecting the place to be this packed with rabbits, something would have to be done, the efrafans either had to go back to Efrafa, work to expand the entire warren or leave to make a new one, and currently it seemed they were trying to do the second of the three choices, though he had no idea how far they had gotten.

When the two finally got to Fiver's burrow he looked around inside it, it wasn't really bad as there was enough space, the dirt had been worn down quite a bit too, he didn't pay much attention to the bedding either.

"It's fine Fiver, I'm not all that touchy about bedding." he said as he paced around to find a comfortable spot then laid down when he found one, "Feel free to ask if you're curious about anything, I won't mind." he said as he relaxed fully, though not appearing to be sleepy in any way.

Spartina thought about it for a moment. Yes, Scoria's help was what she wanted, but she wondered what kind of favor the other doe would ask in return. Still...

"Oh, Granite says one of them has to go to the battle pit, and when I tried to tell him neither were fit, he wouldn't listen. I guess one will have to go, which one do you think?"

Campion didn't know how to say it. Was there any right way? Either way she would think he was a monster. "I need your help to find Woundwort," he said finally. Then feeling guilty, he softened his voice. "No, you don't need this now. Rest." He felt an urge to console her with a touch, but as a substitute went to stand restlessly in the threshold of what they were to call home.

"Do you hear voices?" He asked pensively, pricking a ragged ear.

Fiver smiled at Inle-thlay’s comment, glad that the other rabbit was fine with the state of his burrow. He lay down beside red-eyes buck. For a moment he wondered why none of Efrafans had taken this lair as their own? The tunnels were packed with them and yet he and Gray hadn’t met anybody inside his own place. Were Efrafans just so respectful of others territory?

“It has been a long time since you and your family left Sandleford Warren, Gray,” Fiver said. Yes, it had been a long time and a lot had happened, especially after he had traveled with Hazel and others to Watership Down in search of new home. “Where have you been Gray? I suspect you must have many stories to tell.”

---

Scoria couldn’t say she was surprised by Granite decision. It was the way of Darkheaven to test newcomers in the battle pit, and if they were too weak to put up a good fight they would usually be send to meet the Black Rabbit of Inle. Win or die. It was a harsh rule, but harsh rules were what made rabbits of Darkheaven strong enough to survive in the place like this.

“Do you want to know what I think?” Scoria said, “I think that out of those two only the buck has any chances at winning in the pit, provided he is given a few days to gather his strength and he chooses a lower rank warrior. Otherwise, it won’t be a battle, but an execution.”

Gray nodded, "Yeah it has been a while, though really, there hasn't been much to talk about then, some friendly warrens that helped. Maybe a raid or two on a human garden to get flayrah, there was a very stra ge warren we bumped into though the rabbits there smelt like princes and they'd put the apperance of most other rabbits here to shame. Yet they seemed...lost in mourning, three of their rabbits disappeared during our stay and then it was as if they were simply forgotten, we left shortly after, less than hrair days later we......Efrafa...." he said, slowly trailing off at the end, it must have been quite traumatic.

He noticed his trailing off quite quickly. Quickly cheering up a bit, "I've not had much to talk about when I traveled alone either, ran into another few friendly warrens after that, though they're quite far away, and how have things been for you?" he said.

Blackberry sighed. Whatever Campion was really trying to do, he wasn't in the mood to share. "I don't hear anyone," she answered, "But if you think you do, it may just be Arkose."

Spartina nodded. "That's what I tried to tell Granite, but he wasn't in a mood to listen. What I really need is someone more, um, persuasive to talk to him. Now, Scoria, who fits that description around here, do you think?" If she could make Scoria think that going to talk to Granite was all the brown doe's own idea, it could work in her favor. She at least wouldn't be in trouble for pestering Granite any more. Scoria would.

(Spartina scheming much! Where is Moss when last seen? I can't remember what he was doing, or where.)

Arkose, meanwhile, stifled a yawn, sliding down to a resting position just outside of the prisoners' den. He had no inclination to listen to what they were saying, and put no effort into it. He simply looked around quietly, observing all that was around him.

Frostberry sighed heavily, shaking her fur as she finished her burrow. "Pretty handy, I think," she said to herself, nodding. "I'll go for a break." She licked her darker paws, then drew them over her face. Finishing her brief cleaning, she turned down the run, going up to silflay.

Campion gushed, it was easier when he wasn't looking her in her sapphire eye. "The Black Rabbit told me to kill Woundwort, well not kill him but give him a chance to take him, and then.....and then he takes me with him. My job will be done. That's what he showed me when I blanked out." Campion felt his heartbeat, and wondered why he had never heard it before.

Blackberry gasped. So he hadn't told her quite everything. He had left the worst(or what Bigwig would call the best), for last. "Campion...I..." she fought the urge to scream at him, an urge she had never felt before. Nagging at Hawkbit and Dandelion, yes, but screaming? Never. "The Black Rabbit, um..." she fell silent. There was nothing to say, anyways.

Fiver shivered at Gray’s description of “strange warren”. It sounded very familiar… For a moment, he saw a wooden peg and a wire and then… He shook his head, trying to throw this image out of his mind. He knew perfectly well what warren Inle-thlay had been talking about, but he still asked:

“This weird warren… Was there a buck called Cowslip, who seemed to be in charge?”

---

“I can hardly imagine any rabbit more able to talk Granite-rah out of this idea than you, Spartina,” Scoria said with a solemn expression on her face, skillfully avoiding other doe’s trap. “I mean… You’re one of the few he actually listens to at all. You’re practically his second-in-command. If you can’t convince him to let those outsiders rest a bit before forcing them into the battle pit, then nobody can, I’m afraid.”

She turned away from Spartina and scratched her ear, appearing to be in deep thought. Was there a method to save both of these newcomers, instead of only one of them? If Blackberry became student of the Speaker of Past, then she would have protection in Darkhaven. Scoria could arrange that, but what about the buck? Hmm….

She looked back at Spartina and said, “If I were you, then I would tell Granite that it would be a great disgrace to Darkhaven to force half-dead buck or soft doe into fighting, kill them and then boast how strong and glorious our warren is. The great founder of Darkhaven, who was a son of Rabscuttle himself, wouldn’t stand for that. If he was alive today, he would let the buck rest for a few days and then make him fight. That’s the only way to preserve our honor and ensure that our warriors will be prepared for the coming of Dark One. This is what I would tell him, if I were you.” Scoria paused, gazing at Spartina intently, and then she added:

“But I am not you. I’m only a student,” she said with a nod, before hopping away, leaving Spartina with her advice. It was a good one in Scoria’s opinion. After all, like most rabbits in Darkhaven, Granite-rah was concerned with glory – his or the warren’s. If there was one thing Scoria was certain of, it was this: Granite would never let anything or anybody (including himself) stain the honor of Darkhaven.

Gray seemed to think for a few moments before responding, "Yes...and no, there was one called Cowslip, but he wasn't in charge, someone else was. To be honest it seemed as if the whole bunch was just waiting for the black rabbit to come and take them, just occupying themselves with singing and poetry until their time would come..." he said slowly, "You stumbled over them.....didn't you?"

Spartina was both speechless and considering breaking the law. What she wouldn't give to be able to hit Scoria right now. She sighed. Of course, Scoria was right. Granite could be convinced in just such a manner, and who better than her to do it, after all? Spartina turned back to Granite's burrow. "Granite, I have a proposal for you..."

As Frostberry went up, she sat up on her hindlegs in the grass. She looked around, sighing softly. She bounded a few meters, then laid in the grass to eat.

“Yes,” Fiver said with a grim look on his face. “I was there with Hazel, Holly and Bigwig, looking for Pimpernel. We didn’t find him and Bigwig almost lost his life in a snare. Shining wires… They are all around that warren. The man provides everything rabbits might need and protects them from every threat… except one: himself.”

---

After speaking with Spartina, Scoria decided to pay a visit to new rabbits. Maybe she will get the chance to know them better. However, before she hopped to prison burrows, she run to her own lair. She took from it some food and a few herbs, which would help newcomers recover their strength. Scoria hoped that this small gift will make them more eager to talk with her. It wasn’t just about making friends or allies. The Speaker of the Past was certainly going to ask her students, if they learned anything from outsiders and Scoria wanted to be able to answer positively to that question. Brown doe was planning on becoming a new Speaker and that meant (among other things) making a good impression on current one...

Scoria arrived before prison burrow, noticing Arkose at the entrance. Of course he would be there to keep Blackberry and her buck companion from wandering around the warren or trying to escape. “Let’s see if he is going to let me in,” Scoria thought, as she laid flay and herbs down.

“Hello again, Arkose. How are our guests? Do you think I could talk with them?” she asked the buck.

Arkose snorted. "Guests. You've always had a funny way of referring to others, Scoria. I suppose you could, though - I can't see any reason not to let you. Go on." He nodded, sitting up. "I'll follow you, though, just in case."
