Scoria ignored buck’s response and entered the prison burrow. “Have you made your decision?” she asked, looking from Blackberry to Campion.

---

“Grass and cowslips? Seems to me, there are still many great things left for you to experience in life. No cowslip can compare to a taste of apple and I know where to find a lot of them,” Dandelion said, pointing to orchard down the slope. “It’s a bit of hopping, but believe me, they are worthy of a little trip.”

“So… Will you join me?” he asked with an expectant smile.

A chocolate brown doe raced across the ground as a hawk gave chase. "Help me!" Her azure eyes were wide with fright. She noticed a small space in a rock and leapt for the edge, her claws scrabbling at the rock as the hawk tucked its wings and dove down. The terrified doe managed to pull herself into the crevice of the rock just as the hawk hit the ground and flapped up into the sky with a loud screech. Shula panted heavily from the run and backed up as far as she could, hoping someone would help her.

Two rabbits sat in the ruins of Efrafa. One had black fur with scars all over his body and a mark on his shoulder. Another buck, this one smaller than the first, sat near the bigger rabbit. "Sir?"

"What is it Nettle?" Sunflower asked in a bored tone.

"Now that Efrafa is gone what are we going to do?"

"Survive slave. That's what Efrafans do and don't even think about running off," he growled.

"I won't sir," Nettle said, cowering away from the cold gaze turned on him. "Where do you think the others went?"

"Ran off somewhere probably," Sunflower said. "Some may have joined the enemy warren and some may be wandering the countryside. Surprised you didn't escape when you had the chance."

"Efrafa is my home sir. Despite its problems, rabbits were safe here. And I have nowhere else to go."

Sunflower ignored the younger rabbit and gave a last look around the warren. Then he led the way up the hill and the two rabbits began their journey.

Holly was hopping through the woods, stopping only from time to time to sniff the ground and look for rabbit’s tracks. After an encounter with dark doe (who had introduced herself as Wolfsbane) and explaining to her how to find Watership Down, he resumed his patrolling duty. He had much area to cover that day before he could return to the warren and rest. There was still a possibility of finding more wandering rabbits or survivors from Efrafa. If they were out there, then they needed to know there was a place they could find a refuge.

Suddenly, he heard a non-distant call for help and soon after a loud, almost ear-piercing screech. Holly instantly recognized what sort of creature had made the latter sound. He run towards the source of scream, hoping he would not arrive too late.

He jumped through a bush straight into small clearing. It was empty save for a big rock. Almost as soon as he came, he heard another terrible screech from above. He hopped back into the shrub and not a moment too soon, as hawk stroke at the place he had been standing a second ago. Having failed to catch its prey, the elil flew into the sky, but it didn’t give up entirely. Now it was circling above, watching the ground intently.

There wasn’t much Holly could do other than sit down and wait. He knew that predators usually didn’t have much patience. That hawk would eventually fly away, looking for some other prey. It was only a matter of time…

Finally, after several long minutes, the hawk left. Just to be safe, Holly waited some more time, in case the apparent departure of bird was just a ruse. It wasn’t though.

Holly came out of his hiding place and examined his surroundings. He could smell a strong scent of a doe and there were tracks leading towards the rock. As he approached it, he noticed there was a crevice in it, large enough to fit in a rabbit. For some reason it seemed familiar to him, but right now he couldn’t remember why. Holly glanced up at sky once again. Having made sure that elil didn’t come back; he hopped to the crevice and looked inside. He saw a dark brown doe with black tipped ears and blue eyes.

“You can come out now. The hawk is gone,” he said reassuringly.

Vervain was grazing on a grass not far from entrance to Cowslip’s Warren. It wasn’t the best thing he had ever eaten, but it was good enough. Of course he could go with others to fetch flayrah, but it meant going through cover and risking his neck. Literally. He could take a roundabout and safer way to get to the pile of food that man had left, but he wouldn’t dare to do it. What if he forgot to return the same way and took a shorter route instead? He could imagine a wire round his neck, piercing his throat…

He shook his head, trying to think about something else, but it was hard not to. Vervain was certain that everybody in this place was thinking about snares for most of the time, even though nobody talked about them or disappeared rabbits...

Two rabbits with carrots in their mouths passed by Vervain on their way inside the warren. They gave him somewhat cold looks. On his first day here everybody had been polite and happy to welcome him, but now they were less friendly towards him. “They were expecting I would go into bushes to get flayrah, like them. They were hoping I would die in their place. It irritates them when I constantly stay in the open,” Vervain thought. He wondered how long it will take for that irritation to turn into anger and what will happen when it does? Will they try to banish him? Cowslip wasn’t a fighter and neither were his people, but it didn’t mean Vervain could fight them all, if they were determined to chase him away.

To be honest, he wasn’t sure if he wanted to stay in Cowslip’s Warren even if they would tolerate his self-preservation instincts. Although all rabbits were looking healthy and well fed, there wasn’t much life in them. The only time they were happy or excited was when Silverweed was reciting his poems, but Vervain couldn’t tell why. To him each and every of those poems sounded depressing. “If I keep listening to Silverweed’s poetry, I’ll be soon looking forward to dying. But those rabbits can’t have enough of them! They always ask him for more,” he thought incredulously. The more time he spent with dwellers of the Warren of Shining Wires, the more he was convinced they were all crazy. “And how long will it take for me to catch their madness?”

All of sudden Vervain lost his appetite.

Shula heard the sound of another rabbit and was surprised to see a buck standing in front of her, his paws on the ledge of the rock. Cautiously she crept of the space she had bolted for and hopped down to the grass, sitting up on her haunches to look around and get a feel for her surroundings. "Thank you sir," Shula said as she lowered her gaze to the ground, not sure if this rabbit would hurt her. "My name is Shula."

Sunflower and Nettle traveled for days across the wilderness, being careful of elil and man. They didn't raid the gardens for flayrah and Nettle was often forced to keep look out while Sunflower rested. As they wandered across a field, Nettle stopped in his tracks. "Officer Sunflower, sir. I smell another rabbit, one of ours sir."

Sunflower sniffed the air and realized the slave was right. He sat on his back legs and looked around him, spotting a rabbit he recognized. "Captain Vervain!"

“I’m Holly,” the buck said, looking at Shula intently. The doe seemed uneasy. Perhaps she was wary of him or it was discomfort from having been attacked by hawk. Probably both. “Are you hurt, Shula?”

---

Vervain lifted up his eyes, when he heard somebody calling him. He felt surprise upon seeing and recognizing the rabbit who had cried his name and who was now standing on the edge of the woods. Could it be?

“Officer Sunflower? Is that truly you?” he asked, hopping closer to other buck. Black fur, medium build, scarred body… It seemed like it was him. Vervain smiled. He was glad to have other sane rabbit around and a soldier from Efrafa at that. Then he noticed another buck next to Sunflower. That one was smaller and less physically impressive to put it mildly. Vervain could tell he was from Efrafa too, but he didn’t recognize him. “He was likely one of the slaves. He surely has the looks,” former Captain of Efrafa judged in his mind.

"Just tired sir," Shula replied. "A bit frightened as well but I'll be alright. Is there a warren close by that would possibly allow me to join?"

"Good to see you alive sir," Sunflower said. "I'm sorry to say I haven't seen any others from Efrafa. This is a slave of the neck mark. Nettle's his name. The rabbit kept to me instead of running like the other slaves. How long have you been here sir? Have you heard any mention of the General?"

“I’m not surprised. That hawk gave me a scare too,” Holly said with a short chuckle. “As for the warren, there is one I come from. It’s on the hill called Watership Down. I can show you the way. Can you travel?”

---

Vervain’s ears twitched in surprise, when he heard that the slave hadn’t run away when he had had a perfect opportunity. In Captain’s experience slaves would always try to escape, unless they were sufficiently frightened, and yet this Nettle had (apparently willingly) stayed with Owsla officer. Vervain was curious why, but this question could wait.

“We better come closer to this warren over there. It’s not safe to be near to bushes. They are filled with snares,” he said to Sunflower and hopped back towards Cowslip’s Warren. He was sure that the unofficial leader of the warren will soon come to welcome newcomers, but for now they had enough time to have a little chat.

“To answer your questions: I’ve been living here for a few days. In that time I didn’t hear anything about Woundwort and I don’t expect I ever will. I was there when he fell into chasm during battle of Efrafa. He couldn’t survive that.” He didn’t mention that he had run away cowardly instead of helping General, when the latter was hanging on the edge of said chasm. Sunflower and Nettle didn’t have to know about that little detail.

Shula nodded in answer and followed Holly, stopping occasionally to sit up and search her surroundings for elil.

Sunflower's ears drooped at the mention of no word from the General. He nodded and they followed Vervain back to the warren and down one of the tunnels. As they went down, Sunflower took of the fact that there were no sentries posted to watch for man or elil.

Holly noticed Shula’s carefulness and smiled slightly in approval. It was a sign that the doe was used to traveling through wilderness and living far away from safety of a burrow. “How long have you been alone out there, Shula?” he asked the doe, as he was leading her towards Watership Down. He kept his ears up, not only to hear her answer, but also to listen for any approaching predators.

---

Vervain entered the first burrow they came across. It was empty right now, so he and Sunflower could talk freely till Cowslip comes to welcome the new arrivals.

“To tell you the truth, Sunflower, I’m a bit disappointed that we are the only Efrafans still around,” he told the other officer, once they were inside the burrow, “I’ve been leaving this warren every day to patrol the area and look for survivors, but I haven’t met anybody till today. You would think other soldiers would show up. Is it possible that they all surrendered to Hazel and his outsiders?”

"Since I was ten months old," Shula said softly. "I was exiled and driven out of my warren." One ear drooped as she said that. "Is the warren you live in big? My home warren only had twenty rabbits."
______________________________________________________________________
"I'm not sure sir," Sunflower said. "I imagine that's where the slaves would go though there may be others roaming around out there in the wilderness. As for other soldiers..." he paused, not sure if he would get disciplined by Captain Vervain or not for saying it, "I suppose it's possible that they could have surrendered to the outsiders though I do't know why they would do that."

“A few days ago we weren’t a very big warren, but we’ve had a lot of new arrivals lately,” Holly said. Then he asked: “May I ask why you were exiled?”

---

Vervain listened to Sunflower’s words with grim face. He was disappointed that there weren’t more soldiers still wandering around, but he wasn’t surprised with this news. What else could he had expected after the lost battle?

“Woundwort is finished and so is Efrafa. Those who surrendered had probably figured out it was the time to look after their own tails instead of fighting,” he said. “We need to do the same. Survive, I mean. We have to find ourselves a new home. We could live in this warren, but with all those snares around us…,” he shivered, “I don’t think I would like to stay here. What about you?”

"My mother was dying so I stole food for her," Shula said. "For that I was exiled."

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

"If this place has snares around it then I don't fancy being in a place like this," Sunflower said. "But we can't start our own warren can we? I mean we don't have any does and no soldiers to defend a possible new warren."

"Neither do I sir," Nettle piped up.

„That was unjust,” Holly said. “Hazel-rah would never exile a rabbit who tried to bring some comfort to dying parent.”

---

Vervain let out a deep sigh, “You’re right, Sunflower. We can’t start our own warren with just three of us. We have only one choice then: find another warren we could join. If only we knew where to look…”

“Ehem.”

He looked to the entrance of the burrow, only now noticing Cowslip. For a second Vervain wondered how long the unofficial ruler of the Warren of Shining Wires had been standing there watching and listening. Then again, what did it matter? If Cowslip tried anything, he would have to face two Owsla officers. "I bet even this slave, Nettle, could fight better than him," Vervain though.

“Reuniting with old friends, aren’t you Vervain?” Cowslip asked in sweet polite tone of his, smiling in friendly manner while looking intently at Sunflower and Nettle. “Would you be so kind as to introduce them to me? I must say it’s always a pleasure to see new rabbits joining our warren, ready to enjoy everything it has to offer.”

I'M STILL RUNNING I SWEAR. INLE SPARED ME.

Arkose sat behind her, looking upon the pair inquisitively.

Frostberry smiled broadly at the golden buck. "I'd love to take a trip if it means something new. I've never been allowed the honour of going beyond the warren."
