How do you guys feel about suicide? It's becoming a bigger issue lately.

And what about martyrs who let themselves die in the name of a cause, or those who give up their lives to make sure others live? One could argue that anyone who joins the military/police force/fire department is taking a pared-down version of this act.
Yes, but in general they do not do so out of a wish for death. They do so because they want to serve their country or community, or because of the many other payments and perks offered by those establishments.

clinical depression is generally characterized by lack of motivation and other things, with the extreme being people not leaving their bed at all for days. That tends to be in opposition to the starting a revolution thing. Someone who is suicidal for philosophical reasons rather than emotional reasons would probably be an odd find, but the starting revolutions thing would probably apply to them. People who are philosophically suicidal are also probably the people who either risk their lives or literally kill themselves (as in self-immolation) for a greater cause.

Sure, but I'm saying wanting to die just for the sake of being dead isn't the only reason for suicide. Taking one's own life can also be a means to an end. For example, if someone lets a loved one or a child into a lifeboat knowing there won't be room for themselves, that's suicide. And it's not for the sake of being dead.

I'm just differentiating between those who kill themselves for a philosophical reason (like saving a child), and those who kill themselves because they have suicidal feelings.

There's a difference between dying because you don't want to live and dying because doing so will have a positive effect on others (eg. risking your life for a cause, forfeiting your life in place of another person's, etc.)

In that case, new question.
When, if ever, is it okay to take one's own life solely because one doesn't want to be alive?

Someone who is clinically depressed to the point of seriously considering and capable of suicide probably doesn't have the state of mind for such a decision.

Just to be scientific: the human brain and the brains of most living beings are programmed to have an inherent repulsion to death. If someone wants to die, it's most likely due to an chemical imbalance in their brain.

Suicide being labled as "right" or "wrong" is a gross oversimplification of morality to me.
