Within the time between this episode airing and me watching it, not only did Gak become a meme, but it got run into the ground hard enough to be compared with "arrow to the knee" jokes.

In less than 24 hours, that's pretty fast going.

Also, half of King Sombre's dialogue seemed to be "ha".

King Sombre was by far the most boring villain yet. Explains the incredibly cliche design I guess, the animators must not have had anything to go off of besides "this is an evil unicorn".
Pretty much this. The ending was a tad anticlimactic, and he really didn't do anything. Relatively lazy character design IMO.

Other notes from this episode:

-Twilight refers to Princess Celestia as just "Celestia." Is this new? Seems a tad too familiar (maybe not, considering its Twi)
-Cadence was practically unconscious, until her husband flings her at a falling Spike, again, seems a little, sloppy.
-What did Luna poof up at the end of the episode when she and Celestia were watching Twi and her friends on the train?
-And speaking of Luna, she seemed... off... in this episode. Maybe its just me, but her attitude/reactions early in the episode seemed, odd.

Nit picks aside, it was an amazing episode and I can't wait for more from this season. And "spy" Pinkie Pie is the best thing evar.

I think i can answer those...
1. If it isn't to save on the mile seconds of time, then it's either laziness, an oversight, or Twilight is loosening up.
2. Adrenaline caught up with her. I mean, if i was falling asleep and my husband just picked me up and threw me toward a baby dragon with the fate of an empire in his grasp, i think i would be instantly woken up too.
3. A book. Speculation go!
4. I thought it was jealousy honestly. Jealous of Twilight getting to go on this epic quest while she just gets to stay at the castle.
Like always.

1. Fair enough, I was more curious if it had ever happened before.
2. I guess I could see that, but she was practically comatose. Adrenaline or not, she went from not being able to sit up to R. Kelly (See what I did there? No.. I believe I can fly...? Okay... I'll stop...)
3. I know that. What's in the book? :spitiepie:
4. Maybe, or maybe the book is study material. And she is going to be taking over part of Twilight's training? (or she was just cranky, since ya know, she usually sleeps through out the day).

Also, did they kill King Sombre? I rewatched the episode today, and I think they killed him. Not banish him, not launch him to the far corners of the world, I think they bucking killed him.

2/3rds of the songs in the episode were pretty weak.

The episode has some strong parts and some weak parts, but it was good enough that I still have hope for the rest of the season.

Another note from this episode,

Holy crap is Twilight powerful. She sees Celestia do some powerful dark magic once, and can perform it almost perfectly.

Also, any chance she continues experimenting with the dark magic? Could make for an interesting episode (or three).
