She was born with the proverbial silver spoon in her mouth. Her father was a majority owner in a prominent Italian fashion house, her mother had been one of the models in a holiday show. Suffice it to say that the afterparty left both Pietro and Dana with a bit of a surprise. Once it came out that Dana was, in fact, pregnant - and Pietro responsible enough to remember, even amidst the alcohol haze and mindless passion, the fact that there had been bodily proof that the model he'd bedded was a virgin - they were quickly married, and settled in England, so that Dana could be near her family during the pregnancy. Pietro Giambelli was rich on his own, and the Bakers were rather affluent, so it seemed certain that the baby girl that Dana gave birth to, named Vittoria for Pietro's mother and Rose for Dana's, would grow up in the lap of luxury.

So it was for the first several years of Vittoria's life. Pietro and Dana had grown into an easy fondness with one another, something that might be considered love, if not the full, real thing. They both doted on their daughter, their only child, once it became apparent that Dana would not be able to have any other children.

She was six when it first happened. She had been in her playroom, idly playing with the dollhouse her father had brought back from Italy for her. Her mother called for her to come down to tea, and it was then that she noticed that her dollhouse had been floating - she had been playing with the first floor rather easily, without having to bend down, because the dollhouse had floated up to chest level. She screamed, and the dollhouse crashed to the floor, resulting in her mother racing to her playroom, unable to understand the girl's unintelligible crying and the destruction of the dollhouse. Insistence that it had been 'floating' was put down to the idea that Vittoria had simply tripped and landed on it, busting it up, and was afraid of getting in trouble so she made up a story.

As the year went by, though, it was apparent that something was different about Vittoria. Lights would go out when she was upset, glasses would shatter when she screamed, and one day, her mother was woke up during the night by violent crying and screaming, to find Vittoria hovering two feet over her bed, kicking and flailing and trying to get down. As her mother fretted about how to get her down without hurting her, Vittoria fell back to the bed, and clung to her mother for the rest of the night.

Unsure about what was going on, Pietro, once he found out, took Vittoria to his priest, being the devout Catholic that he was. The priest was baffled - certainly, the doings that Pietro mentioned were devilry, but he could see nothing of the devil in the sweet, innocent child brought to him. All the same...the devil's work could always be hidden behind a sweet smile. So the girl was put through intense therapy sessions, made to bathe in holy water once a day, had to go to confession three times a day to 'confess' the devil's work that she was doing, because the events were happening more often now, especially as she got tired and upset and frustrated with the paces that her father and the priest were putting her through, highly angry with constantly being told that she was being an instrument of the devil, when she had no idea what it was that she was doing. The priests and nuns grew more concerned, and more amazed, every day that went by and she didn't burn in the holy water, nor did she cry in pain at entering the church or reading Scripture.

This went on for two years, with the relationship between Dana and Pietro growing more and more strained, especially as Dana became convinced that nothing was wrong with her baby girl. She finally put an end to it when she served Pietro with divorce papers, complete with requesting full custody of Vittoria. The divorce was made final, with custody awarded to Dana and summer visitation to Pietro.

When she was ten, one of the few times when Pietro had come to London for his visitation, they had a visitor. It was now the policy that muggle-borns were visited to fully explain to parents about their extraordinary child, and what would be happening from there. Vittoria, by now, was a quiet, reserved child, who, despite the things that were done to her, still trusted easily - and loved her father deeply, understanding at ten what she hadn't at seven - that he wanted the best for her, and had been worried. Pietro had seemed sincerely sorry for what he had put his daughter through, especially as it had broken their family, and seemed to be the most enthused about what their visitor was telling them - that Vittoria had been born with magical talent, and should be schooled at an institution that taught control in witchcraft and wizardry. So it was arranged that Vittoria would enter Hogwarts the year she turned eleven - which would be the following year.

The next year was the hardest for Vittoria. Her mother was hit by a car when crossing the street, and after lingering for three months, she finally, quietly, died, with her young daughter, now rather old in her soul, by her side. She was left with her mother's jewelry and a trust-fund that was put in place to pay for her schooling. She would much rather have had her mother. For the remainder of the year, before she was to go to Hogwarts, she went to Milan to stay with her father, whose attentions had changed...he made sure she wanted for nothing, but he was unsure of how to act now around his daughter, so different from him, mature beyond her years. So he tended to have little to do with her, speaking with her at mealtimes, and finding reasons to not be alone with her.

Finally the day came for her to return to London, buying her materials at Diagon Alley, then heading to Hogwarts. She was eager, to be around people who were like her, who would accept her for who she was. And then she discovered a new kind of prejudice - and not a moment too soon, as she overheard people talking about it...how 'muggle-borns' were looked down on...'Mudbloods', they were called in a hushed whisper. A magical child coming from non-magical parents was just unheard of! Then and there, she determined that no one would know her parentage - her mother was dead, so there was no reason for anyone to know that her mother wasn't a witch herself. Sure, the staff, the ministry, might know differently...but the students, her peers, didn't have to know. At eleven, she decided to hold to her the biggest secret of her life.

Once at Hogwarts, she was sorted into Ravenclaw, and the next year showed that she had a rather keen intellect and a swift adeptness in the magical arts, which helped to cement her secrets...even today, and even with the historical people who had been muggle-borns and been strong magicians, it was still believed that magical blood made for better magical powers.

During the summer, she went back to Milan, and endured the absent-minded affections of her father, being showered with gifts and an allowance, but getting none of the actual love that she needed. Perhaps it was no surprise, then, that once she went back to Hogwarts, she became attached to a boy she met on the train. He was quiet, but not because he was shy - and he looked at her as though he was measuring her up. They had spent the trip mostly in silence, occasionally asking a pointed question, and most would say that it was a stony start to a friendship...but somehow, it wasn't, it was simply how they both were, and it melded.

Over the years, her friendship with Devereaux grew, but as he was a Slytherin, and by now, she already knew that those were the ones to watch, to guard her secret from, she was very careful to watch what she said to him. She rarely spoke about her family, which wouldn't make it strange that she never talked about her mother, and she certainly never let on anything about what her father and priest had put her through. Vittoria had simply come to depend on him too much, and she worried that her number of secrets would make him hate her.

Her time in school wasn't without event. The immense weight on her, of her secrets and history, had made her a time bomb waiting to explode. She had a calm, cool exterior, and could remain so through extremely strenuous stress, but once she was pushed past her limit, her temper was extremely volatile, and she had on numerous occasions lashed out at other students with it. It was a miracle that she was never expelled - she was lucky in that she had never done actual physical harm to anyone. Of course, it was more a miracle when one considered that her best and dearest friend enjoyed egging her on - and he was very good at it. In the end, as she got older, she spent most of her time alone, or with Devereaux, and preferred it that way. When she would go home, her father would outright avoid her, now that she was looking more and more like her mother every day.

After graduating school, Vittoria decided to take a couple of years to travel abroad, on her father's dime. Occasionally, Devereaux would catch up with her...and it was on one of those occasions that the two of them drank way too much and ended up nearly destroying the room that she had been staying in...making her thankful for the use of spells. The next morning, well, it could have been awkward...but somehow, it just seemed like it had been an inevitable step, and their new relationship went on just as their friendship had...just with an added benefit now.

Vittoria turned twenty, and decided to return to school, wanting to become a teacher...so she could possibly return to the one place that she had felt even slightly accepted. She dragged Devereaux along with her, not really giving him the option of backing out, and she went along with university much as she had with secondary school - in Ravenclaw, quiet and reserved and preferring to spend the majority of her time with Devereaux, if she wasn't studying. Her secrets were still in tact...for now...though there was no telling how long that would last, now that she had learned a rather big one of her boyfriend's.
