Yes, one has to be Youngling before becoming Gaidin in most cases, but the Gaidin level isn't related to training. Youngling is SM OOC, and In Character, Younglings are considered to have satisfactorily completed their training. The only thing that makes one Gaidin or Gaidar is a bond.
