Adena was Accepted. She could hardly believe it. It had hardly been a few days since she was raised, and the work was hard. They were not joking when they said they wanted to catch any girl who slipped through the cracks. They seemed to be making it especially difficult on Adena, so many Aes Sedai were sure she was one of those who slipped through. The worst part was, Adena was not so sure they were wrong. She did not want them to be right. Now that she had finally made a decision about staying in the Tower, she felt like a weight had been lifted off of her shoulders. Of course, in its place was the weight of her future as Aes Sedai. She was still not sure that was what she wanted, but that was what she was working toward now. Light, what a strange thought. How many women became Accepted without knowing beyond doubt that they wanted to be sisters? Most of the novices who had been in the Tower a week or a month knew they wanted to be sisters, or they were sure they did not. Of course, Adena had been in that second group a month after arriving- even a few years after arriving -and yet, now she was somewhere in the middle, though admittedly moving more toward joining the first group. Even if she did become Aes Sedai though, she did not know what she could do. Some of the Ajahs interested her, but none of them seemed to fit like an Ajah was supposed to. In her third arch, she had not had an Ajah, and she had certainly not been the Amyrlin. The memory scared her. Of course, that was the easiest part of her testing to accept, the rest she refused to think about, at least until the nightmares came every night. On the one hand, she could not believe the Tower would do something like that to a woman they wanted to become Aes Sedai. On the other, she could both believe and understand it. Women had to be dedicated, and what better way to prove it than put them through something as cruel as that? Adena tried to push the thought out of her mind. It was not easy, she thought about it most all the time. The smell on her hands helped though, in a way. At least it was a real chore, not something emotionally scarring. She had had to pick the rotten produce from basket after basket of every kind of vegetable and fruit Adena knew- and some she did not. The rotting food had not left a pleasant scent on Adena's clothing or hands. She was done with that now, and she would not have to deal with it again until tomorrow. Later, she had a private channeling lesson with a Gray sister, which would certainly not be enjoyable, but that was later. Novices were pushed hard to learn the Power, Accepted were practically tortured into learning what they could. It was just like being in block breaking sessions all over again, more like the women wanted to shame and embarass her than teach her anything. She smoothed the angry look off her face as a passing novice gave a particularly deep curtsy. She was supposed to emulate Aes Sedai, and sisters did not show anger unless they thought it would do them some good. Certainly frightening novices would not do Adena any good. She finally reached the Accepted well, and pushed the door open carefully. She filled a pitcher of water and made her way up to her new room- her own room -to wash her hands and face and change her dress. Her new room was comfortable- practically out of a palace compared to her room as a novice -and she did not have to share. Her bed was large and comfortable, the chairs quite serviceable, the table offered much more room for study, and the wardrobe was a very welcome improvement over pegs on the wall. Finally, Adena was satisfied that she no longer smelled of rotten fruit, and set to washing her dress in the washbasin. True, there were places for Accepted to do their washing, but for one dress, Adena did not see the point when she already had water and soap here. She did have to wash the dress though, Accepted were expected to keep their things clean, and leaving a dirty dress lying around to make the room smell would not be a wise decision. The dress was not stained, thankfully, and it was not long before Adena was hanging it to dry on the outside of her wardrobe. She thought about doing a bit of reading, there was a book on the Great Game she was particularly interested in, but she had been outside today. It was beautiful, and she was not going to let this day pass her by. She grabbed the book just in case she decided to do some reading in the gardens and headed back out of her room. Down through the halls she went, glancing down into the garden in the middle of the building. Garden, if it could be called that, it was nothing compared to those elsewhere in the Tower. Some of the girls took it upon themselves to spruce it up a bit, but it was far from impressive. Right now, there were three or four Accepted chatting, but Adena had no desire to join them. Most women still begrudged her the attitude she had had about the Towers as a novice. It would change with time, she was sure, but it would be a little while before most women were open to any real conversations. Instead, she made her way out to the main gardens in the Towers, and walked the paths. She had lived in the White Tower for twelve years now, but she had explored only a small portion of the grounds, except when doing chores. Novice life was too full for Adena to spend much time here, and most of her novice years had been spent immersed in an attitude that did not allow her to take in all the beauty. Now she was making up for lost time, enjoying the warm afternoon sun, stopping to smell a flower here and there. For once, her arches ceased to haunt her, and her worries about the future seemed far distant, and she was able to relax. For perhaps the first time ever, she found herself enjoying the Towers. She hoped it would not be the last time, but planned to take full advantage of the moment just in case. |

Recruit, Lost during the War
|
Ryker had just finished a spar with another one of the recruits. The young man was smaller than him (but there were not many even the same size) but he was fast. Ryker sported a couple of bruises due to his sparing partner, but nothing major. He had finally won the bought by a surprisingly fast maneuver crashing his blade squarely on the top of the other mans head causing him to be sent to the infirmary. He had made it a personal rule that if he was ever hit while practicing that he would do one lap around the practice yard. The Gaidin that was in charge of watching the recruits that day told him to try to be a little gentler on the skulls of his future opponents but did not scorn him for the hit. Practice was a rough sport that usually caught the slow and the weak. Gaidin were strong and fast a mountain lion on the prowl. I think I'm more a grizzly on the hunt he laughed to himself as he looked at his massive arms. When he finished his laps around the yard he quickly made his way to the barracks to change into something a little less sweaty than what he had on. Stripping down he quickly washed himself in the cold water that he had left in the basin that morning and put on his pants and a loose fitting white short sleeve shirt. Finishing up with his boots he sat on the bed and drew his sword. He had been allowed to keep the sword his father had given him. Looking at the slender curved blade he put the flat of it against his forehead and closed his eyes picturing his father standing in the woods with a slight smile on his face like he remembered seeing thousands of times. Sitting there he slowly fell asleep his sword drifting down until it fell from his hands crashing to the floor and waking Ryker up. He laughed again and picked up his sword. Strapping the sword belt on he made his way from the barracks he had no classes that afternoon. Walking he looked around at the other recruits and decided that he did not feel like hanging around with them. He missed his home in the woods out side of Shol Arbela he often found himself going to the gardens of the White Tower. They were not home but they were the closest thing he could find to it. That is where he found himself going. It did not take him to long to get there, when he did he stopped and took a quick look around smelling the fresh afternoon air. He started to walk in following his favorite path enjoying the silence of this haven from humanity. Turning a corner he spotted a accepted bent over smelling a flower. Smiling he slowed his walk and asked her if it smelt good. |

This walk was incredibly enjoyable. She had not thought it would be so relaxing, but suddenly Adena was very glad she had decided to spend some time in the gardens. It was good to get away from people for a little while, especially when so many of the Accepted seemed to hold tight to the memory of Adena's first few years as a novice. Even some of the women who had not even known her then looked down their noses at her. It was enough to make Adena scream! She took a deep breath. She would prove them all wrong. They would see. One day, she would be just as respected as any of them, and they would realize how wrong they had been about her. They would realize how much people could change over as many years as she had been in the Tower. They would have to learn one day that they had to take people as they were. If they were still this blind when they were raised to Aes Sedai, Adena would consider it a great failing of the Tower. She tried to push those thoughts out of her head. They would not do anyone any good, and they would only upset her. Of course, she no longer randomly channeled when she was angry, for which she was very grateful, but still, anger came with a twinge of fear. After so much time being afraid that she would accidentally channel whenever she got angry, it was no surprise that pure anger was hard for Adena to come by. Perhaps it was better that way though, Aes Sedai were supposed to keep a tight rein on their emotions, and maybe this one little thing could help Adena do just that. Plenty of time to worry about that later, she thought dismissively. Right now she was supposed to be relaxing, and of course the moment she realized she was relaxed, she had completely undone everything the gardens had helped her achieve. She took another deep breath and bent over to smell a particularly beautiful lily and before she had straightened, she heard someone speaking to her. A man asked her how it smelled. She looked up quickly, and found her eyes going up and up. Light, but this man was enormous! He was muscular, with his long hair in two Arafellin braids. He was not dressed in any soldier or Dedicated uniform, and he looked at one with the sword at his side. Not the dangerous grace of the Gaidin, but perhaps one who would have it one day- this man was a recruit, he could be nothing else. She straightened, but even so the man was a full foot taller than she was. She wanted to take a small step back so that she could look at him directly without straining her neck, but she did not want to look as though she was intimidated by this man. She was not, he had no look of violence about him other than what all Gaidin in training had, he certainly did not appear to be of any mind to use that sword on her, and he had only asked her about how the flower smelled. Besides, what reason did this man have to be bothered by her? Just making conversation, that was all he was doing. But still, Adena could not bring herself to step back, even if it would not be a sign of weakness to her, there was no knowing how he might take it. Her mother had always told her never to let anyone see your fear- or anything they might mistake for fear -unless you were sure it would come to your benefit. "It smells lovely, all the flowers here do. It makes me wonder sometimes whether the Aes Sedai and Asha'man enhance the beautiful smells in order to increase the effect of the gardens," she said lightly. She had wondered about that once or twice, but never seriously. What Aes Sedai or Asha'man would waste their time making flowers smell better when there were a hundred other, more important, things they could be doing. Especially with the war in the south. The initiates were not told any great amount about that, but even the least social of novices and Brown sisters knew that there was a war, and it was not going to be something the Towers could sort out by sending a few Grays or Aman Val to mediate. Adena was all too aware that Amadicia was not siding with the nations backed by the Towers, and far too many people seemed to take that as a sign that Adena herself might be some kind of traitor. That made her furious as well, Taraboners, Illianers, Ghealdani and Altarans were not subject to such prejudice, neither were the few other Amadicians that Adena knew of. Why had they targeted her? She pushed that thought away as well, there was no use contemplating that. She knew she was no traitor, and that was good enough for her. Hopefully soon it would be good enough for others as well. "So recruit, what brings you to the gardens this fine day?" she asked with a smile, as much to avoid thinking angry thoughts as to engage in a conversation. Much as she had wanted to avoid the other Accepted, this man seemed to have no idea that she was to be the target of mulitple forms of persecution, and that was refreshing. She thought perhaps a friendly conversation might make her feel better, and hopefully help her get her mind off the dozen upsetting things that were all she could think about. |
