Retired Alantin d'ma Aman
((I’m setting this before the Treason thread. Too much intricacy to juggle)) Lucius Isendret, Former M’Hael, of a former world wandered bleakly through the beautiful gardens of the White Tower. This new world did not suit him. Rather, he did not suit this new world. While he did not miss the burden of being the M’Hael, the go to man, he found that it was hard for him to stop being the M’Hael. At least in his mind. In this world, he was behind. Zakriid had leapt into duty, already the small man was a leader of a Shen, a “Rei” as they called them in this world. But Lucius was lagging behind. He was making progress in adapting to his new life, but he was a stubborn man, and he was taking his time. Lucius disliked change. So much of the change in his life had been bad. But one particular change was still the sorest to him. Xaria. He thought with a snarl to himself. The snarl was for no one in particular, although if he would have thought about it, he would most likely have admitted he was angry at himself for being weak. When Xaria had cast him away all those years ago, it had hurt him deeply. He had at one point in his life deluded himself into thinking that he had loved her. But now, as he looked back on his life, he knew the ever logical Aes Sedai would never have loved him. However, he had been a loyal guardian, taking many wounds in her place. Why she had thought that he knowingly hid that he could channel from her was a mystery to him to this day. As if thinking about her had made him more attentive, he suddenly realized through their ancient bond that she was not very far away. For a moment, he considered leaving, a simple gateway to elsewhere in the Tower, or even a brisk walk. Instead, he continued walking, pausing to sit at a stone bench along the path that overlooked a large pond stocked with bright colorful fish. He knew that before he could fully deal with changing to this new world, he would have to clean up his past. He could only hope that Xaria felt the same way. |

Dar d'Ma Aman, Lost during the War
This new world was, in a word, different. Xaria had had a hard time growing accustomed to it, and in the months since they arrived here, she had made some slow progress. Slow being the key word. In this world, Aes Sedai and Asha'man were equal. They both lived in Tar Valon, for the love of the Light! That was enough to throw Xaria off balance nearly every day. Aes Sedai and Asha'man coexisting peacefully in such close contact. She could hardly see how it was possible. The Asha'man in this world must be very different, and much more tolerable than those from her world. And here she was not the Amyrlin. Some of the group they arrived with had already been successfully integrated into this world's Tower. Zakriid had been most successful, he already led one group of the Asha'man. He is the Rei of a Shen, she made herself think. It was not something they had done in the old world, but this world was her home now- it had to be -and she had to get used to things here. Asha'man had groups that seemed to be modeled after Ajahs, the only difference being a public leader. She had quickly learned that Ajah Heads were secret here as they had been in her world. That, at least, was a comforting similarity. Not everything was different, even if it seemed that way sometimes. Some of their numbers had been accepted into Ajah or Shen- not many, but a few -while Xaria still carried the title of Dar d'ma Aman. She thought it an ironic choice of name, Sister of the Dragon, since the Dragon did not actually show up for their Last Battle. The Dragon seemed to be important to the people of this world, a true hero, and so Xaria thought that thte title was meant to be an honor. An honor, while they deny us the right to be Aes Sedai and Asha'man. She certainly could not blame them, they had made the right decision, anything else would have been stupid on their part, but it still grated a little. Xaria thought that she would probably remain Dar d'ma Aman as long as anyone from the old world. She was the Amyrlin, it would take her the longest to get used to having people over her, and she had to set the example. Besides, they probably thought she would be the longest in becoming truly loyal to this place, and so they would keep her out of full sisterhood as long as possible. She could see the logic in that, even if she did not particularly like to admit it to herself. Of course, if they followed that logic, Lucius would be Algai d'ma Aman as long as she. So far, that held true, he had not been accepted into the ranks of Asha'man yet. Xaria had not seen him a great amount, she spent most of her time with her Aes Sedai- not her Aes Sedai, not anymore. Most of them were not even Aes Sedai anymore, though the Oaths still bound them. Whatever they were, she spent much of her time with them, encouraging mostly, and dealing with the horrors of their Last Battle. She had seen him once or twice, and had civility had been managed on both sides. They still kept their bond unmasked, they had not discussed it, but neither had masked it since their arrival. During the Last Battle, they had unmasked it to keep track of the other's safety, Xaria could not help feeling that they kept it unmasked now for the same reason. She knew they were not in danger here, but for some reason neither one of them seemed to want to be cut off from the other. It was not because Xaria wanted anything to do with Lucius, she still disliked him as much as she always had, and now that she was not forced to trust him, she found herself reverting back to her old doubts. Xaria thought it was something more like both of them wanted the reminder of the old world, something from then, something that reminded them it had not all been some terrible nightmare. Though perhaps better if it had been. Logic did not rule in keeping the bond unmasked, but Xaria had hardly thought about it since their arrival here, there had been so many other things to do, and she had seen no real reason to mask the bond. Almost as if thinking of him had summoned him, Xaria felt Lucius close by. She knew he had not suddenly arrived wherever he was, so she had to assume that her thoughts about him had made her more sensitive to the bond. It was not masked, but most of the time she tried to ignore it. It was strange having another person in her head again. Arkalon's presence was gone, something she tried to think about even less than Lucius, and now it was replaced by the very different awareness of Lucius. She felt a moment of indecision, and then Lucius returned to his normal self, if the man could ever be said to be normal. She thought about turning around. She could go back the way she had come from, and avoid seeing him. That was the nice thing about having the bond unmasked, she knew where he was, and if she did not want to see him, she did not have to. Of course, it worked the same for him, but that was fine with Xaria. She was almost certain he had to have felt her as she did him, but he had not turned away. In fact, he had stopped moving. At this short distance, she could feel even the slight change of position as he walked through the gardens or Towers. But now he was staying in one place, directly in her path, if she continued in a straight line. Lucius must, on some level, want to see or talk to her, then. Well, if he was up to it, then so was she. They had told each other before the Last Battle that they would at least try to work everything out if they both lived. Now they were both alive, and they had worked nothing out. Perhaps her old bondmate had decided it was finally time. He was not making any attempt to come to her though, perhaps he did not want to press. At least, that was what she would think if it were anyone but Lucius. The man was always testing or pushing her somehow. Maybe he just wanted to taunt her into coming to see him. That thought almost made her turn around just to prove him wrong, but there was no point in being spiteful. Besides, they would probably achieve more for their people if they were on somewhat better terms. She continued on her walk, and as she passed a large tree, she saw Lucius sitting on a bench watching some fish swimming in a large pond. Xaria walked over to him, and stood beside the bench where he sat. She said nothing, only joined him in watching the fish. She waited calmly, patiently, for him to speak. She did not know exactly why, but she did not want to begin this conversation. In some ways, she considered this meeting his idea, even though she had technically been the one to approach him. In the back of her mind, she felt a tickle of nervousness that she knew Lucius would feel. It was not strong, but it was not meaningless. Xaria was not emotionless, but she was able to keep a tight rein on her feelings. What was in her a slight case of nerves, would be outwardly visible uncertainty in others. Xaria wondered what it would be like to be so bombarded by emotions all the time. Even the thought of it was somewhat bothersome to her, she was not sure she would even be able to think. The memory of a particularly heated meeting in Cairhien between herself and Lucius bubbled up. Her anger that night had certainly gotten the better of her, and she had found it quite difficult to think clearly. Yes, she was quite glad she did not have to deal with that all the time. Better to be cool and even, and firmly in control of her thoughts. Much better. |
