Erin had been there when Rialt brought back Kiren's ravaged body. She had flinched when she saw it, what the ravages of decay and Kiren's murderers had done to it. She had stood beside Rialt, unflinching, when they finally consigned her to the cleansing flames and scattered her ashes to the four corners of the Earth. Robert had been there, grim and silent, drawing support from Sapphira as they watched. During all that time of mourning she had associated with hardly anyone, taking her meals in her rooms in the Barracks, spending most of her days working herself into the peak of condition. To be honest, it hadn't taken long. She had always maintained herself in top form, practicing against the gaidin with longsword almost everyday. And her riding skills were current, she made a habit of taking one of her brother's warhorses out for exercise almost daily. When it came to her chosen weapons, lance, horsebow, longsword and light mace, she was not quite as good as her brother or her niece, but she could more than hold her own with most of the Garrison. She was on her way now to meet Major Romaine. She and Siobhan were going today to see the M'hael, to see what they could do to help find and catch Kiren's killers. She was in Guard black today. A plain working uniform with no insignia of rank. Over that she had on a plain mail shirt, slit for riding. Her long red hair was pulled back in a ponytail hanging down her back. She met Siobhan at the entrance to the Barracks, and the two of them entered the Black Tower. Erin was here only occasionally, and this was apparently Siobhan's first visit here, given her curious glances from side to side as they walked. The various asha'man, dedicated and soldiers gaped at them, wondering what in the Light two gaidin were doing in the Black Tower. The two of them entered Rialt's outer office and announced themselves to the two asha'man guards posted there. "Major Siobhan Romaine and Erin Laurel to see the M'hael." |

I think we can still do this if we just have Rialt gone off to who-knows-where and I'm meeting with his replacement. |

(OOC: Sorry this took a while, but I wanted Erin to have an approved biography first.) Reor did not even know where to start. Three days ago he had been appointed the M'hael, and he had barely had time to get a brief overview of the things he was supposed to be on top of from now on. The situation was quite chaotic. With Rialt leaving the Tower so suddenly, the affairs of the Black Tower were totally in Reor's hands. Reor loved that kind of independence, but he would have liked a brief tutoring, some advice, even. Rialt had left a lot of loose ends that kept him busy, not to mention the war that was knocking on his door and the situation with Sapphira. Light, the White Tower was practically leaderless until the charges against Sapphira were handled and the Black Tower was being led by a man who had spent the last sixty years away from the Tower! Reor did not consider himself unsuitable for the task and did believe that he would get on top of his tasks and lead the Black Tower succesfully, he just did not appreciate being thrown into a situation like that with little preparation. And then a knock on the door. "Major Siobhan Romain and Erin Laurel are here to see you, Father. They seem... determined," said the Asha'man after he had entered the room and bowed properly. Reor sighed heavily. Whatever their business was, he had little time for it. There were a million things to do... But the women would know that, of course, and surely they would not bother him with something unimportant. And besides, it would be good to get to know some of the leaders of the Garrison. He had not yet met Robert Laurel, who was pretty much the leader of the Garrison as Nosane al'Haran until a new Haran al'Tari was chosen. He would be working quite close to him in the future, he was sure. "Let them in," he said simply, and the Asha'man left the door open when he left the room. Reor looked around to make sure that the room was not untidy. He had not had a chance to move his own furniture in yet so the office was quite plain without any personal belongings decorating it. But then again, Reor had always been satisfied as long as he had the necessities. A quick brush through his hair with his hand and a tug at his formal Asha'man uniform and he was ready to greet his visitors. |

Erin and Siobhan were ushered into the room. Erin looked curiously at the man in front her, this new M'hael. She had been shocked when Rialt abrupted resigned and disappeared only Light knew where. She had been even more shocked when the Black Tower picked for its new leader a man who had just returned from fifty years away. He looked capable enough, but there had been many changes and she hoped that Rialt's staff was bringing him up to speed. With a major war ready to begin, much less the situation with Sapphira, the Black Tower would be at a definite disadvantage with a new leader. Erin had known Rialt well. She couldn't say they had been friends, but she had seen him often when he came over with Kiren for dinner. "Thank you for seeing us so quickly, Father," she said. "I am Erin Laurel, sister to Robert Laurel, the commander of the Garrison. This is Major Siobjan Romaine, commander of the Guard's Scout Company," she said by way of introduction. "As you may know, Kiren Thyme, the former commander of the Garrison and the former M'hael's bondmate, had murdered not long ago. My brother has ordered us, Siobhan and myself, to find out who actually performed the deed, as well as any one who may have helped planned or assisted in any way, and bring them to justice. His preference would be for justice to be exacted immediately, and not at all subtly, in order to let the world know that this is the vengeance of the Towers and to send a message that members of the Towers are sacrosanct. The murder was also in violation of the Laws and Customs of War as set forth by the Mercenaries Guild, which are adhered to by all the nations. I would like to know your wishes on the matter, and what help you can give." |

The women entered the room quickly and Erin Laurel introduced herself and the Major. And then went straight to the point, which Reor appreciated immensely. Reor internally cursed himself for not finding out more about the Haran al'Tari's murder as soon as Erin uttered her name. As the Haran al'Tari and the former M'hael's bondmate, she of course had been a very important person but Reor had not known her personally and was unaware about the specifics of her death. He had heard all the rumours but knew better than to rely on gossip. Erin further explained that Robert Laurel had assigned Erin and Siobhan to find Kiren's murderer and their assistants. She also said that Robert wished for them to be executed immediately to show the world that the members of the Towers were inviolable. Reor immediately knew what to think about that. He did not know the details of the murder, but he did agree with Erin when she said that the deed was against the Laws and Customs of War. It was most certainly against Tower Law as well, but Reor would not make it his first deed to show the world that the Towers operated on vengeance. He would give the women all the help it took to find the murderers, but he would not have them executed without a full trial in the Towers. "I am certain that Rialt has made some preparation for this matter, but I do not know of their nature yet." He did not hesitate to show his ignorance when it was unavoidable, and he was sure that the women would understand. "I will look into it promptly and give you the details of the Black Tower's assistance in this matter as soon as possible. I do promise you assistance. If the former M'hael has not brought his wishes to the knowledge of others, I will give the Reis authority to choose the men they judge suitable for the task. At this moment I can promise you five Asha'man." He would follow Rialt's wishes on this matter if he found out what they were. But he could not have an abundant amount of Asha'man looking for the murderer at this time. He judged five to be an appropriate minimum. "However, I do not accept Robert's wish for a swift execution. The murderer and their assistants should have a full trial and they should be judged under Tower Law. That is the only way we can bring the attention of the world to the matter and show them how we deal with murderers. A swift execution with an insufficient trial leaves room for speculation and rumour. A full trial will reveal all information relevant to the matter and insure that the murderers know the full extent of Tower Law. Please let Robert know my view on the matter. If he still decides to prefer a quick execution, that decision will be his own and it will not have the Black Tower's approval." |

Erin listened to the M'hael's reply. Five asha'man? That's more than what I had expected, she thought to herself. She nodded when Reor gave his objections to execution without trial of the perpetrators. "I agree with you," she said. "And now that his temper has cooled, so will my brother. He's given me full authority to act in his name in this matter, so he will accept your conditions. Kiren was one of our best friends, and he very much wants to see her murderers brought to justice. A trial would bring everything out into the full light of day, so the world can see what kind of people they are." Erin paused. "What has puzzled us most is that Kiren was wolfkin, and made no attempt to hide that fact. With her heightened senses, it should have been almost impossible for an assassin to get close to her. Perhaps your people would have ideas on that." She continued. "I look forward to meeting and working with your Asha'man. I've never had that opportunity before." |

Reor was glad to hear that Erin agreed with him about the full trial and was sure that Robert would agree as well. A full trial was something that Reor would not negotiate, but he did not wish his relationship with the leader of the Garrison to start in bad terms. He was sure that Erin knew his brother well enough for Reor to trust her word on Robert's approval. It put his mind at rest. Erin continued that Kiren was a known wolfkin and it was puzzling how anyone had been able to get close enough to murder her. Reor agreed. He was not an expert on the wolfkin but he knew that they were very hard to approach without being noticed. The assassin must have been extremely talented and well aware of the wolfkin's special senses. Or the assassin was not noticed because they were not human. It was an unpleasant thought that he did not wish to say out loud but it was bound to be brought up during the investigation. He would make sure that at least one of the Asha'man was educated on the wolfkin. Erin finished with saying that it was the first time she would be working with the Asha'man and she looked forward to it. Reor flashed her a smile. "I will make sure that the Asha'man who will accompany you will have the skills and knowledge that will best benefit your task. I hope that your co-operation will be successfull and rewarding. And I hope that this will be the first step in the successfull co-operation of the Black Tower and the Garrison." |

Erin nodded as she prepared to leave. "Thank you for your help, Father. I can be reached in my office in the City or in my quarters in the Barracks. I'll also be spending a lot of time with the Major here. We can be ready to leave on a few days notice. We can start our planning then." (now all you need to to do is come up with three asha'man...) |
