(OOC: I'm sick, so mine's not long either. >.<)

Jetsuade glanced at the Accepted, a bit afraid what she would think of Jetsuade's outburst. She had all but challenged the whole sisterhood of Aes Sedai, claiming that she would be better than them! Jetsuade was afraid that she would seem like a dreamy young girl, or worse, the Accepted could get angry at her insolence. Well, Jetsuade could admit to an extent that she was still just a little girl compared to the knowledgeable Aes Sedai, or even the Accepted, but she was not stupid nor childish and she would learn in time. But Jetsuade saw Adena smile and was very relieved. She did not wish to gain a reputation as a wishy-washy novice with goals too big for her and apparently Adena would not think of her like that. Jetsuade did not think her goal too big for her. It was far ahead but she would be Aes Sedai one day. She would show them.

Adena even went as far as to say that she actually hoped that Jetsuade succeeded and that nothing would make her happier than Jetsuade showing the world that it was possible. That gave Jetsuade some hope and courage. Adena did not say out loud that she thought that Jetsuade would or could succeed, though. Oh well. Jetsuade herself did not know if she even could succeed yet. Time would tell. Time is exactly what she needed at that point. She needed to learn. She needed to get into the Aes Sedai philosphy and see for sure how they did things and how she could avoid manipulating and using others herself. And she needed time to think it all through as well. She did not plan to discard the idea ever but she needed to think it over.

So she decided that that was enough about that subject. She needed to work on it on her own first. "What do you plan to do when you are an Aes Sedai, Accepted Adena?" she asked instead.

Accepted

Adena supposed she should not have been surprised by Jetsuade asking what she wanted to do as Aes Sedai but she was. She had not thought the topic of conversation would turn so quickly from the novice to herself, but it was a question she should have been expecting. Talking about plans as Aes Sedai, it was only natural for the girl to ask about Adena's future now that they had discussed her own. Still, Adena was a bit taken aback. What did she plan to do as Aes Sedai? She had thought about it a little since her raising to Accepted, but mostly she had been trying to decide whether she actually wanted to stay that long. Sort of a stupid thing to wonder about, she supposed, she was Sealed to the Tower now, and it would be even harder for her to get away now than it had been as a novice. But even so, that had formed the majority of her thoughts, well, that or the Arches. She shivered slightly at the thought of that test, it was still hard for her to believe that the Aes Sedai would put anyone through that, even though at the same time she understood the need.

What was she going to do as Aes Sedai? She hoped she did not look as baffled as she felt, it would not do to admit to a novice that she had no idea what she wanted for her future. And even if she did have to tell Jetsuade that she was not sure, she wanted to wrap it in as much Aes Sedai mystery and intrigue that Jetsuade would never be sure whether she had gotten a definite answer or not. Even as that thought came to her, she realized she was trying to find a way to do exactly what she had told Jetsuade that Aes Sedai did constantly. She wanted to manipulate this poor novice so that she could save face. She would not do it. Aes Sedai could manipulate each other all they want, even Accepted could other Accepted, but this novice had made it clear that she barely understood the concept of manipulation, and she certainly would not expected. Especially not from Adena, who had just said so bluntly that she should. Something of a paradox, she thought, that the girl would not expect manipulation from the one who had told her that it was the way of life for Aes Sedai.

Still, she wanted to think of something to tell Jetsuade. She just wanted to do it honestly. She loved the Great Game, but she had long since decided that it was entirely unfair to play it with someone who did not even know to expect it. So what did she want to do as Aes Sedai? Well that was difficult. How could she have passed her Arches- the memory caused another slight shiver -without even knowing what she wanted to do as Aes Sedai? Well, maybe she could tell Jetsuade what Ajahs she thought she might join. Her choices were still as wide open as they had been when she was a novice, she was still interested in the White, the Blue, and the Gray. Very different Ajahs, and Adena could honestly not say what it was about the Ajahs themselves that attracted her.

"Well," she began slowly, not knowing what she was going to say next, "I've been in the Tower a long time, but I spent a lot of that time trying to find a way out, and I've only been Accepted a few months, so I haven't had a lot of time to think about what impact I want to make on the world." That sounded sufficiently self-assured, she thought, even while admitting that she did not know what her future held. "I've looked into the Ajahs a bit, and currently I'm interested in three of them, White, Gray, and Blue, mostly because of the opportunities they offer, and in the case of the White, I'm rather awed by their cool serenity." Of course she was impressed with the cool serenity of all the Aes Sedai, but Whites had made it an art. Adena had a temper though, she did not know if she could manage that, it might be interesting to try though. Even if it had been acceptable, she did not think she would have mentioned that in her third Arch she had been a sister without an Ajah, or what she had felt seeing that man so badly mistreated. That was one reason the Blue still interested her, although she knew she was far from a compassionate person, and truth to tell, she cared more about herself than about anyone else. An odd paradox, that, yet there it was. "I don't want my time as Aes Sedai to be meaningless, I want to do something, I just don't know what yet. I would like to get out of the Tower if I could, which will be less likely if I choose White, but I don't know what I want to do once I'm out in the world." Not so self-assured anymore, she fell silent, she did not know what else to say, and she was sure Jetsuade had more than enough to judge her thoroughly and decide that Adena would not make any better an Aes Sedai than Adena thought Jetsuade would.

Adena did not say anything for a while. She does not know. Jetsuade was not too surprised; after all, when they had first met, Adena had only been a novice. She had been raised to Accepted quite recently, and Adena had said herself that it usually took eight to twelve years to be raised from Accepted to Aes Sedai. Novices were not even supposed to think of Ajahs yet. If Adena had only recently started to consider what she would do as an Aes Sedai, it was only natural that she was not sure yet.

"Well," the Accepted finally began, and Jetsuade looked at her expectantly, "I've been in the Tower a long time, but I spent a lot of that time trying to find a way out, and I've only been Accepted a few months, so I haven't had a lot of time to think about what impact I want to make on the world." Jetsuade nodded. Just as I thought. "I've looked into the Ajahs a bit, and currently I'm interested in three of them, White, Gray, and Blue, mostly because of the opportunities they offer, and in the case of the White, I'm rather awed by their cool serenity." Jetsuade nodded again, this time with a thoughtful face. She had learned the basics of each Ajah and could remember the goals of each Ajah Adena mentioned, but she did not know about the actual life of a Blue Aes Sedai, for example. She did not know what they practically did in their everyday lives. She had seen them, of course, admiring their serenity and pure-heartedness... After the Accepted's revelation, she was sure that she could not look another Aes Sedai in the eye without feeling utmost anger and disgust. She pushed the thought away. She did not want to think about that now. She would have time.

"I don't want my time as Aes Sedai to be meaningless, I want to do something, I just don't know what yet. I would like to get out of the Tower if I could, which will be less likely if I choose White, but I don't know what I want to do once I'm out in the world." The Accepted did not sound too confident anymore. Jetsuade wondered if Accepted were supposed to know their future Ajah so soon after all. Adena seemed not to be happy with not knowing her future plans as an Aes Sedai.

"But you have time, Accepted Adena. You said yourself that you don't expect to be raised any time soon. I am sure that you will find your Ajah and your goals as an Aes Sedai with time. And I am sure that whatever you do as an Aes Sedai, your time will not be meaningless." Jetsuade had only just begun to understand what it meant to be Aes Sedai. She had an idea what she wanted to do as an Aes Sedai, formed during their conversation. Adena apparently did not have a similar drive for a specific task, but Jetsuade was sure that the White Tower would not raise an Aes Sedai who had no idea what she was going to do next. The Accepted would find her place in good time before being raised.

Jetsuade did not seem to be disappointed or disapproving that Adena did not have plans for her life as Aes Sedai laid out. She simply nodded as Adena spoke, and when she was finished remarked that Adena still had plenty of time to decide. She was confident that Adena would find a place in the Tower that would make her life and time as Aes Sedai meaningful. Adena appreciated the confidence the girl offered, and gave her a small smile. "Yes, I suppose that before they raise me to Aes Sedai they'll make sure I know what I'm going to do. They don't raise women who aren't ready. I don't know what I'm going to do yet, but I will by the time I'm raised." Strange how a moment ago- and for the last several months -she had been worried about not knowing what direction her life would take as Aes Sedai, and now a few simple words from a novice had been so reassuring. She still had no idea what she was going to do when she became Aes Sedai, but she would know when she got there. "I do have a long time before I'm raised, I suppose for right now I should just focus on being Accepted and learning what I can." She had chosen a few things to study, and perhaps if she was spending her time working on those, rather than worrying about her future, she could progress a little faster.

Of course, that did nothing to help her forget the Arches, that was an entirely separate matter, and not one that she thought could be dealt with quite so easily. She wondered if, when she was Aes Sedai fifty years, she would still wake in the middle of the night breathless and sobbing over that test. Surely not. Aes Sedai did not do things like that. They were strong and serene, powerful even when they had no one to be powerful toward. Aes Sedai were collected and did nothing they did not want to do. They were not the simple, wonderful people that Jetsuade had thought, but they were certainly many other things. She would not sure she would believe it if ia White sister told her directly that she still woke upset about her Arches. Aes Sedai could not lie, of course, but Whites did not cry either. Adena thought it might be a close thing as to which was more certain. No, the Arches would become part of the past eventually, she would move on and become Aes Sedai. After another test. Adena had already been told much more about that test than about the one for Accepted though. It involved completing one hundred weaves under great duress. Surely that could not be as emotionally scarring as what she had just gone through. Even so, she was not looking forward to that test. Maybe it was a good thing she had no idea what her future held.

Adena gave her a smile. She was looking a lot happier now. She admitted that you were not raised to Aes Sedai if you didn't know what you were going to do and that she would know what she would do by the time her raising finally came. The Accepted continued that she should just focus on being an Accepted because she did have a long time before she was raised. Jetsuade nodded to that. She wished she was an Accepted already. But right now Jetsuade had to focus on being a novice, and being a novice wasn't always pleasant.

"Thank you for the lovely conversation, but I have chores in a minute," she said. She really was a bit disappointed at that. She would have loved to continue, but chores were chores. "I will think about everything you said, Accepted Adena." The woman had given her a lot to think about. And it would take time until she was totally sure what the new knowledge meant and how it affected her. She hoped that she had given Adena something to think about as well.

Jetsuade stood up and curtsied properly, but with a friendly smile on her face. "I do hope that we will meet again," she said before clutching her white cloak around her tightly and leaving the gardens, dreadfully reminded of the pile of dishes that waited for her.

(OOC: I thought it was a good place to end this for now. Let's leave some room for character development and have them meet again a bit later. :D )

Adena nodded as Jetsuade announced that she had chores coming soon, saying that she had a lot to think about, and she hoped they would meet again. The Accepted gave a smile, she could honestly she hoped the same. Friendships between novices and Accepted were far from encouraged by the Aes Sedai- Accepted had to maintain their rank and authority, after all. Novices could not be given reason to believe that they were superior to the other girls they trained and lived with, and for many girls, an Accepted for a friend might do just that. Not that Adena and Jetsuade had formed a tight friendship over the past few minutes, of course, they both had maintained all proprieties. Adena felt a moment's pity of the girl going for her chores, Adena had hated novice chores more than anything, and regardless of whether Jetsuade had come from a noble House or a farmhouse, she probably enjoyed them no more. Novice chores were better than the first few weeks as Accepted, of course, but Jetsuade would learn that if she was raised. When she was raised, Adena hoped.

She watched the girl start on her way before standing, clutching her own cloak closed, before she she made her own way back toward the Accepted well, wishing that she knew that Aes Sedai trick for ignoring the heat. She had a lesson later, but for right now she was free. Not to say that she had nothing to do, of course. She had plenty to do in preparing for that lesson, and other studies to work on as well. Accepted life might include fewer chores, but that did not mean they had much more free time than novices, just that it was filled in different ways.
