A couple of weeks in Soldier black had taught Juhon many things. The first - and the most important - thing was that he was happy. He was happy in the Black Tower, even though he had been torn away from his family and strictly told not to flirt with women. He did miss his family, but only momentarily and not too deeply even then, and with the women... well, he just had to make sure he did not get caught. He hadn't pushed his luck yet, but there was plenty of time. Otherwise things were just magnificent. The chores were sometimes quite unpleasant, sure, but the classes were interesting and he always had something to do. He never had a boring moment, which was a nice improvement. He always knew what he was supposed to do next. His whole past life had been drifting from one goal into the next with no purpose. Now he had a purpose for everything. He was going to be an Asha'man. The other thing he had learned was how much he had to learn before he could even dream of becoming a Dedicated, much less Asha'man. He absorded every bit of information he was given but he had barely scratched the surface so far. He had to put his quests for more information in some kind of order, and had decided that one of the first things he should do was to get to know the Black Tower, the Shens and the hierarchy through and through. And what a better way to start that than seeking the Rei of a Shen and personally asking him about his Ajah and his position. He was not sure whether or not the Rei would receive him or answer his questions, but it was worth a try. Soldiers were not supposed to be choosing a Shen so early, but Juhon assumed that a Rei would not turn away someone interested in their Shen, be it Soldier or Dedicated. Asha'man Sarecer was rumoured to be a hard man, but no one had described him as unkind. So Juhon walked to his door, bowing respectfully to a passing Asha'man, and knocked on the door loudly, hoping that the Rei was in. |

Sarecer had been sitting behind his desk for hours now reading reports from the south. A war was raging that threatened to do more damage than anything since the Trolloc Wars. It angered him how stupid people could be and how complacent the Towers had become. It had not been so bad those years before he was imprisoned in the Stedding. The men of the Black Tower were still more warrior than diplomat, more soldier than peace keeper. His Shen would once again bring battle to those who stood against the light. He would see to it that those under shadow trembled when facing men wearing the green and red of his Shen. Taking a calming breath Sarecer stepped out of his rambling thoughts and back to the paper in front of him. Memorizing the contents he lifted the paper by a corner and grasped the power and with a trickle of fire the paper turned black in his hands and crumbled to dust. Just as he was cleaning the ash from his desk a loud knock made him look at the door. I have no meetings He thought to himself as he straightened his long silver hair. I'm bored of this paper work anyway. "You may enter." He said loudly enough to be heard on the other side of the door. He was surprised when a young man entered a new soldier guessed Sarecer. He did not know many of the younger initiates of the Black Tower he did not waste his time with teaching. "Your name?" Sarecer asked as the door shut quietly behind the boy. |

Juhon did not have to wait long for a call to enter. He smiled briefly before schooling his features back to calm and polite and opened the door. The Rei most certainly was in and Juhon could bring his plan to some sort of conclusion. Either the Rei would welcome him and answer his questions - or at least some of them - or he would send him away, in which case Juhon would have to ask some other Asha'man of the Aman Val about the Shen. Juhon looked around quickly as soon as he stepped in. He kept his glance brief and looked at the Rei himself. The man had strange, silver coloured long hair. Surely he is not that old? Juhon quickly averted his eyes; he did not want to seem like he was staring. All Asha'man required politeness and respect from Soldiers, Juhon was sure that the Rei would not be any different but would appreciate an even higher level of respect that he of course deserved. The man asked for his name and Juhon bowed deeply. "My name is Juhon Baior, Asha'man Sarecer" he said as he rose. "I am quite new to the Tower and came to ask about the Shen al'Aman Val and about your duties as a Rei." He said no more than the essential, the Rei could decide whether he was welcome or not by that information. He smiled very slightly, hoping that he would not send him away just yet. |

Sarecer waited for the boy to answer his question. Studying the boy quietly he kept his features unreadable. He noticed Juhon staring at him, at his hair and quickly look away. That brought a bit of amusement to Sarecer. He had no trouble speaking his age he was proud of the accomplishments he had made in his 230 years of life. "My name is Juhon Baior, Asha'man Sarecer" he said as he rose from his bow. "I am quite new to the Tower and came to ask about the Shen al'Aman Val and about your duties as a Rei." "You have a long way to go my boy," He said looking the boy in the eye, "before you should be thinking about Shens. Years even. But you are here so I will explain the purpose of my Al'Aman Val. But first pour me a glass of tea." He finished gesturing to the Iron stand across the room sitting beside a large lounging chair. It was where he normally took his tea relaxing when he took leave from his duties. The tea pot sat on a thick stone slab atop the stand. He had woven fire into the stone and placed a ward of keeping over it to keep the water warm. He watched as the boy walked over and poured a glass and brought it back handing it to him with another bow. "Good good." He said, "taking a sip. Now my Shen is responsible for the protection of the M'heal. We are the sword arm of the Black Tower. Where darkness stands we appose it. When nations clash we force them to stop. You are Kandori if I don't mistake your accent. You have probably seen my men in the north battling the foulness that seeps down from the Dark Ones lair." Pausing he took another sip of his tea and waited for the boy to sink his teeth around what he just said. "As Rei of this Shen I act as the hand that holds and directs the sword. I see to it that are put to the proper use." He didn't mention anything more. Leaning back he waited for the boy to ask anything else. It was a good break from paperwork. |

Juhon immediately feared for the worst as the Rei told him that it would take years before Juhon should be thinking about Shens. Juhon knew that, and it wasn't as if he was already trying to figure out what Shen he was going to join. He wanted to know about the Shens so he could consider the members of each Shen accordingly. It would look very poor if a Soldier did not know what the Shens did. Of course, he could get the basic information anywhere, so the Rei was probably used to Asha'man in training coming personally to him only when they were actually considering joining the Shen. But the Asha'man did not dismiss him after all, but said that he indeed would explain to him the purpose of his Shen. Juhon quickly obeyed him as he told him to pour the Rei some tea first. Juhon had done it before only twice, so he still was not quite used to it, but the tea pot was visible and Juhon did not have to heat the tea himself, so he managed the task gracefully enough. He handed the glass to the Rei with a bow and waited anxiously for the Rei's answer to his enquiries. "Now my Shen is responsible for the protection of the M'heal. We are the sword arm of the Black Tower. Where darkness stands we appose it. When nations clash we force them to stop." Juhon made sure that his face remained respectful and interested. He could not help thinking that the Rei's explanation was rather... ostentatious. But then again, so were the other descriptions he had heard. Like the Blue Ajah, promoting justice and causes? Who determined those causes? Who decided what was justice? It could mean anything. "You are Kandori if I don't mistake your accent. You have probably seen my men in the north battling the foulness that seeps down from the Dark Ones lair." Juhon nodded slightly. He had never been no soldier, Borderlander or not, so he knew little about the fights against the creatures of the Blight, but he had seen Asha'man with the soldiers now and again. After a pause, Asha'man Sarecer continued. "As Rei of this Shen I act as the hand that holds and directs the sword. I see to it that are put to the proper use." Juhon nodded. That was clear enough, even if it told little about the Rei's actual day-to-day work. The man leaned back and Juhon took it as a sign that he was finished and ready for more questions. Juhon certainly had a lot of questions. "Asha'man Sarecer, you describe your Shen as the sword of the Black Tower. Does that mean that you are primarily warriors? What kind of talents and skills are required to be an Asha'man of the Aman Val?" |

"Asha'man Sarecer, you describe your Shen as the sword of the Black Tower. Does that mean that you are primarily warriors? What kind of talents and skills are required to be an Asha'man of the Aman Val?" The boy said to him after a moment. Nodding his head Sarecer thought about his answer for a moment. "We are primarily warriors but we are also skillful diplomats. War is not only one man killing another, a lot of the times it is one man talking to another. In this way we can usually stop confrontations before they happen. Are skill as warriors helps this process, the rulers we speak too often know that if talks do not go the way we (The Black Tower) want we have the power to destroy their armies if called upon to do so." Sarecer watched his words sink into the boy and decided to ask a question or two of his own. "It is my turn," Sarecer said to him before he could reply, "What are your goals here in the Black Tower. What is it you strive for?" |

Juhon waited patiently as the Rei thought. Finally he explained that they were warriors, but also diplomats. "War is not only one man killing another, a lot of the times it is one man talking to another. In this way we can usually stop confrontations before they happen." Juhon listened as he further explained that their skills as warriors help in this mediation process because the rulers know the Black Tower is powerful and could destroy their armies if the talks are unsuccesful. It made sense to Juhon. The Black Tower was powerful and intimidating. No King or Queen would purposefully go against them, so the Asha'man had an upper hand when it came to negotiating. Wars were not always decided on the battlefield. "It is my turn," the Rei continued. "What are your goals here in the Black Tower. What is it you strive for?" Juhon was not expecting a question like that. He would of course answer truthfully, but he was afraid that the Rei would not get an answer he was expecting, either. "I must admit that I do not know, Asha'man Sarecer, at least not yet. I am only beginning to know and understand the Black Tower. My goal at this point is to learn as much as I can and be raised through the ranks and become an Asha'man. As an Asha'man of the Black Tower, I intend to serve the Tower and the M'hael. But how, I do not know yet." A van smile ran through his lips quickly. He really did not know. What was his purpose? He waited for the Rei's reply. |

Sarecer had expected more or less the answer he had gotten. He knew that most soldiers had no direction when they first arrived at the Tower. It was only after some training, training what showed them what they were good at that they picked a direction for themselves. Standing he walked around his desk and moved to stand in front of Juhon. Placing a hand on his shoulder he looked into the boys eyes trying to get a fix for what was behind them. "When you have decided your direction come and talk to me again." With that Sarecer dismissed him and turned back for his desk. He decided he would talk to the Master of Soldiers and keep an eye on the boy. He knew one would be coming to the Tower soon that would cause the world great hurt, he just didn't know who. |
