Recruit, Lost during the War

Ryker had been training in the towers for a couple years now and every day he learned something new. He had spent most of his time learning how to wield his sword how to fight on horseback and tactics. He enjoyed the sword training the most out of all of it. He had thought that he knew how to fight but on his first day of training he was taught differently he still had the scar across his nose as proof. In fact he had just came from working the forms with a couple older Gaidin. He enjoyed practicing the forms immersed in the void it was peaceful. Ryker had left the practice yard and headed towards the Tower Grounds wanting to sit in the garden to cool down. Walking along the path he pushed his sweaty red hair out of his face so he could see where he was going. He was heading to his favorite bench it sat in a quiet part of the gardens. He liked to sit there to gather his thoughts and to day dream about the adventures he'd have when he was finally raised to Gaidin. It took him a little bit of time but he finally made it to the bench. With his big hand he swept off the snow that had accumulated over night and sat down. He looked up at the snow covered trees and bushes and thought of home it had been a long time sense he had left Arafel. He would return one day, though in better standing. Maybe he would visit the lord that had sent him to Tar Valon to hand those letters to the Asha'man and Aes Sedai. Wondering what was in those letters he was disturbed by a small girl walking up to him. She seemed very cold and very unsure of herself. He had seen enough novices to know that she was probably very new to the tower. |

Kataniya couldn't help but smile as she walked through these amazing gardens. She had always felt at home in nature. It made her miss her grandmothers gardens, although these were nothing like those. She wandered close to some of the flowers, letting her fingers drift softly over some of the petals. "What a beautiful place" she thought to herself, letting out a relaxing sigh Turning through the gardens, Kataniya realized she wasn't alone. She looked over the man sitting near by. He was quite a bit larger then her. His fiery red hair was something she hadn't seen before, and he had eyes the color of hers. She was very interested in him. Looking over her skirt, and checking that everything was in place, Kataniya put on her best smile and approached him. "Hello" She said kindly, with a soft voice. |

Ryker glanced up when he noticed the girl walking towards him and cursed under his breath. He had already caught a couple Aes Sedai eyeing him up when he was practicing. It was the last thing he wanted at the moment, to be bonded, the only thing he wanted was to become a better warrior. It was a life he had dedicated himself too and he wouldn't be detoured from achieving mastery at it. As the girl walked closer he watched her out of the corner of her eye. He studied her carefully, she was a lot shorter than he was, alot lighter as well. She walked with a carefree innocence he associated with young girls from the far south. "Hello" She said to him with a soft almost shy voice. Looking at her he stood and offered her a short bow and a hello of his own. Sitting down again he put his hands behind his head and arched backward cracking his back. "How are you?" He said nonchalantly placing his hands on his knees. He leaned forward and looked into her eyes as she began to answer. |

Kataniya bit her lip, and drew a breath before answering. "I'm ok, How are you?" smiling at him. She couldn't help but notice how gorgeous his eyes were. She was sure that girls fawned over him. He definitely made her heart beat a bit faster. Her inquisitive mind wondered about him. Where did he come from? Why was he here? She was hoping that she would get to talk to him for awhile, and that he wouldn't just blow her off. |

"I'm ok, How are you?" She said to him with a smile. Ryker returned that smile and said, "Ah your a talker." Laughing he stood up directed her to follow him. He wasn't sure if she would or not but he started to walk anyway. He turned down a little used pathway that still had a fresh lair of snow on it. The path was a quick but round about way to get from where they were near the center of the garden to a path that was closer to an exit. She followed him which caused him to have to take shorter steps he hadn't realized how much taller he actually was until he stood up. The birds were chirping and the wind rustled the snow covered branches of the bare trees. Snow trickled down from the clear blue sky to land on his head. It wasn't as cold as home but the crisp air and the fresh snow still made it feel like it actually was his home. "I am good." He finally replied to her when he remembered that she had asked him the question. "I just came from the practice yard. You are new I imagine?" |

Kataniya laughs "Does it surprise you that I talk?" She hitches up her hood around her face to keep out the cold as she followed Ryker through the gardens. She wasn't used to these temperatures. She came from somewhere that was warm mostly year round, and rarely saw snow. She did not like the cold either. It would take her time to get used to it. "Yes I am very new here" she looked at Ryker as they kept walking "I've only been here for just a few days." Her thoughts drifted back to home. She wondered if her mother got home ok, and how her grandmother was doing. She was home sick. She missed her family, her house, her friends, and her town. It was so weird to be in this new, and very different place. She missed walking along the beach, and watching the sea. It was a calming place for her to get away and think. Brought back to her present thoughts by a cold breeze tugging at her cloak, she couldn't help, but giggle as snow dropped from the tree and landed on Ryker's head. "How long have you been here?" Ryker laughed along with Kataniya when she replied to his comment. "No I guess it doesn't surprise me that much." He said when he had quit laughing. It had been a while sense he had anything worthy of true laughter. He sapposed that being stuck in the garrison had taken away that aspect of his life. Thinking about it he realised that laughter had been gone along time. Ryker dropped one hand to his sword and rested it lightly on the pummel it was a comfort to him. A gentle breeze and the say of his step nocked one of his braids fell away from his ear and hit him in the shoulder. Lifting the hand he had just put down on his sword he grabbed the firey red braid and lifted it back up notting how frozen the end had gotten in the winter cold. "I'm ok, How are you?" She said to him and after a moment asked how long had been here. Thinking about it for a moment. They both drifted off into thought. He drifted off day dreaming of the course that led him to the Garrison. His thoughts were cut off short though when a strong breeze blew nocking snow off of trees all around him. He sensed his impending danger a second too late as the snow hit him. Grumbling about winter he shook his head and wiped the snow off of him. "I Have been here a couple of years I don't know how much longer I'll have until I'm deemed worthy enough to leave and adventure on my own. Where are you from?" He asked her knowing that it was some where far to the south. "How did you end up here?" |

"I am from Mayene. My father was one of the Firsts Guards, and my mother a midwife. My grandmother has been in the Tower before. I guess it was only a matter of time before I ended up here. My mother brought me here so I could learn to channel." Kataniya looks up at Ryker offering him a nervous half smile. "I've never been away from my family before. I'll I had left was my mother, and grandmother. My father was killed when he was on a mission protecting the First. I was apprenticing my mother, and grandmother, learning about becoming a midwife." "Where are you from, Ryker? I would love to hear about your land. I never got the chance to go anywhere other then my trip here. I've been stuck in Mayene most of my life." Kataniya reached up to grab a piece of her hair that had flown in her face. Winding it between her fingers, and playing with it. A shiver ran down her back, she felt a little light headed. Someone was channeling near by. Kataniya looked around for somewhere to take a seat. If she were to faint right here, she would be utterly embarrassed. Walking through a few trees, Kataniya spotted a bench sitting in a small alcove. She walked to it, and sat down quickly. Blood rushed to her cheeks, causing her to blush. She hoped that Ryker wouldn't notice, just brushing it off to the cold air. Watching as Ryker took the seat next to her, she really hoped he would tell her more about himself. |

Ryker nodded his head as she told him about where she was from and how she ended up in Tar Valon enrolled in the novice books. She was from Mayene so his assumption that she was from the south proved right. He watched as she started to play with her hair asking him where he was from she had never been far from home. She was probably really well read, he thought, figuring that her family were well off. At least better off than where Ryker came from. They continued walking in silence he was thinking of what to say, he continued to watch her and the surrounding area. It had been drilled into him to be aware of everything around him to spot danger before it could spot you. He was better at it than the rest of the recruits, he had learned from his father to process everything quickly and pick out anything that didn't belong. It was how you survived in the wilderness to keep yourself safe and keep yourself fed. He watched as Kataniya rushed to a bench and sat with a blush appearing on her face. Wondering at that he sat brushed snow off the other side of the bench and sat down. "I am from Arafel," he said and paused, "I don't know what to tell you about it really. Its cold in the winter so cold that trees would sometimes burst into pieces." He laughed remembering how he and his father had jumped awake when a tree nearby had done exactly that. "The cities are the same as anywhere I guess. Though back home they keep the lights on all night long to keep the fades from being able to walk the streets. They even have lamps in the allies." He stopped and looked up as a flock of small birds burst from the trees behind them, he turned his head and spotted a large raven sitting in a tree not to far from the bench. Standing up he reached into his pocket and pulled out a rock, he waited until he was sure the thing wasn't looking before he threw it hard. He watched the rock fly through the air and smack into the bird with a sickening thud feathers burst into the air and the black raven dropped to the ground. He didn't have anymore rocks but he looked around for more ravens, he didn't spot any so he sat back down. "You can never be sure what one is more than they seem." He said noticing the disbelief and shock on her face. "Some myths are true." |

Watching as Ryker stood up, she couldn't help but let her eyes follow to where he was now looking. There sat a large raven watching them curiously. Kataniya looked over the dark bird, and couldn't help the shiver that worked its way down her spine. She gasped at the thud that followed the shiver, and watched the raven fall to the ground, with feathers flying everywhere. She turned her gaze back to Ryker, and stared wide eyed. Certainly he could have just shooed the animal away. She shuddered again, and looked at the black feather that floated down, landing on her knee. She picked it up, and examined it. Blacked that glistened, with blue and green hues. She heard Ryker say "You can never be sure what one is more that they seem." She turned back wide eyed again, "Some myths are true" Kataniya felt her stomach flip flop a little and she gulped. "I've never seen a raven before, and I was always told that it was a myth about them being the dark one's spys." Brushing the feather between her fingers, and twirling it back and forth looking at it in the light. She couldn't help, but wonder about the bird. Was it possible that it was just a regular raven, or was it a spy sent to watch someone here at the Tower?. Shuddering again before dropping the feather on the ground. She watch it float, and land softly in the snow. "Do you think it was sent to spy on someone here in the Tower?" She questioned Ryker. |

Ryker smiled knowing it very well could have been sent to spy one someone, the creator knows that there are enough important people in this city that would warrant such an action by the Dark One or his many minions. Looking back at where the bird was he glanced back at Kataniya and smiled "It might have been, but it also might have been innocent, well as innocent as a bird like that could be anyway." Realizing that his feet were starting to get chilly he reached a hand down to pull the girl up from the bench "Lets walk and find somewhere warmer to sit." he said and started to walk back towards the two towers. They walked for a little while before he noticed that the weather was changing rapidly. The clouds were darkening and the wind was slowly picking up speed. "it looks like we might be in for quite the storm" he said looking down towards the girl walking beside him, and as if on ques the snow starting coming down. It was a blizzard the likes of which he hadn't seen in years the snow so heavy that he could only see ten or so meters in front if his face, the only thing that was on their side was the wind which blew from behind them. Kataniya looked at the sky, and shivered. She pulled the cowl of her clock closer to her, and snuggling back into it. She wasn't used to this weather still. She had never seen snow in her life, and had always thought of it as fairy tale type thing to her. It was all to real for her now. "I agree, lets get somewhere warmer. I'm still adjusting to this cold weather, and its not something I am quite fond of yet. Will you please lead the way back to the Towers?" She smiled at Ryker, before turning back to look at the now falling flakes. She reached out with her hand, and grabbed one, watching as it melted on her warm skin. She giggled quietly to herself before tipping her head back, sticking her tongue out, and catching one on her tongue. She blushed slightly, and laughed out loud, after regaining her composure. She wasn't sure what Ryker would think of her sudden outburst. Kataniya really couldn't help herself. The new weather was some what fun. Reaching down, Kataniya grabbed a handful of the fluffy snow. She squished it into a ball between both her hands, and turned quickly, flinging it at Ryker. She bit her lip, retaining a giggle, and watched him for a reaction. Hopefully he has a sense of humor, or at least humors me She thought to herself. |

The snow was nothing new to Ryker he had lived through hundreds of these snow storms, sometimes harsher ones sometimes ones that fizzled out not long after they started. He hardly paid attention to the snow anymore, though he had to admit it was his favorite season. Glancing down at Kat he realized just how new and amazing things like this could really be. He could not imagine never seeing snow in his life. Smiling he watched her try and catch one of the little snow flakes with her hand, and he watched as he eyes lit up and she opened her mouth to catch them with her tongue. When she started to giggle he laughed along with her. It had been along time sense he had laughed at something so minor, something so innocent. "Have you never se..." he started to say when a ball of snow exploded against his head. His first reaction was to reach down for his sword drawing it an inch before he realized what had just happened. He took the momentum from his reach to throw himself forward into a roll to place himself in front of the girl. He reached down and threw one back. Balls of snow started flying and he started to laugh, he hadn't had a good snow ball fight sense before his dad had died. It was good for his soul to laugh. He threw a ball that hit her in the face, as she wiped the snow away he quickly hid behind a bush, quieting his laughter, he waited and watched her look around.
