Name: Elaine Treherne Age: 39 Height: 5 feet 1 inch Weight: 90 lbs Hair: Brown Eyes: Brown Favorite Weapons: Rapier, dagger, stiletto, throwing knife, garotte Elaine is small and delicate looking. Moderately attractive, but not a standout. She relies on quickness and dexterity, and her chosen weapons reflect that fact. She is an superbly trained dancer, acrobat and gymnast, as well as an accomplished horsewoman. For many years, due to her loveless upbringing and even more loveless brief marriage, she had suppressed her emotions, not wanting to be hurt again. But in recent years she has begun to open up, and to her great surprise has become best friends with Erin Laurel, who being a member of the high nobility of Cairhien was as far socially from Elaine as could ever be. And much to her astonishment, she has become a friend and confidant of the Amyrlin Seat herself. She carries a scar on her left leg from a war wound, and walks with a slight limp that is only discernible to those who know her well. Elaine was born in abject poverty on a small farm in northern Illian. The poverty was due to the fact that her father was not good at farming, and drank up any money he did get, and regularly beat his wife and children out of frustration. Her mother died when Elaine was thirteen, and within the year she found herself being given in marriage as payment to one of her father’s many creditors. She was underage, but in the backcountry the law was observed more in the breach. Her husband was just as brutal as her father, and she shed no tears when he was killed in a brawl less than a year later. She sold the ramshackle house and business for what little she could get for it and left, wanting a new start, thinking that anywhere was better than there. She headed north toward Lugard in Murandy. On the way she fell in with a troupe of traveling performers, headed by Cesare. She needed more money, and offered to help take care of the animals for room and board and coin. One of the troupe's acrobats fell ill, and Elaine volunteered to learn her part. To her surprise, she found she was good at it. Cesare put her through an intensive course in gymnastics and acrobatics. It was hard, but Elaine loved it. She loved being on the high wire and performing to the applause and cheers of the spectators. She also learned how to dance. She already knew a little, some of the rustic, country dances of her childhood. But this was different. More demanding, more physical, more elegant. Elaine would always be small, due to the inadequate food while she was growing up, but she found it could be an advantage, as she could be partnered and tossed around by larger, stronger male dancers. Elaine was having the time of her life. She was doing something she loved, and was getting paid for it as well. Plus, for the first time in her life, she actually had friends, and she looked upon Cesare as the father she had really never had. But, unknown to her, Cesare had been watching and evaluating and judging, and he eventually to a decision. One night he called her into his wagon. There he made her an offer. He told her that he was an Eyes and Ears for a mercenary company, the Gold Eagles. He compiled information wherever the troupe went and passed it on to the company’s head Eyes and Ears. He said that Elaine had the talent to work for the company. He would train her, as much as he could, and then he would send her on to Caemlyn, where the company presently made its headquarters. Elaine was shocked, surprised, and then intrigued. While she loved the life with the troupe, she had a hankering for something more. She agreed, and then began working the hardest she had ever worked in her life. Cesare, and other members of the troupe who worked with him, began schooling her in what she needed to know. She learned how to pick locks, how to use her acrobatic skills to break and enter, how to follow someone without being spotted, etc. All of the skills she would need in her new profession. Elaine also learned how to fight, and how to kill, if necessary to defend herself. Given her slight size, the best weapons for her were the rapier and blades such as daggers and knives that could be thrown as well as wielded. She spent long hours at practice learning their use. She found that she loved to ride, and rode daily. Finally, when Cesare judged she was ready, he took her to Caemlyn. There he introduced her to the Gold Eagle’s Eyes and Ears, Matteo. She also met the company’s commander, Paolo Bashere and his second, Robert Laurel. She was found acceptable, and began even more intensive training. As well as going out on missions, she became a researcher, learning how to find disparate nuggets of information and put them into a encompassing whole. The years passed. Matteo retired, and Elaine found herself in his place. She wasn’t there when the Gold Eagles were decimated; she was in Illian on a mission. She hurried to Tar Valon and pledged herself to Robert’s service, and to the service of the White Tower. She was tested by an aes sedai, and found to have a slight talent in foretelling, which came and went intermittently as ‘hunches’ and could not be trained. Still Robert’s Eyes and Ears, she also became the Tower Guard’s spymaster, coordinating all the intelligence efforts of the garrison. She was frustrated by the failure of her many attempts to get the Eyes and Ears of the various Ajahs and individual aes sedai to share vital information with her. She still went on missions. There were some agents and informants whom only she knew the identities of. On one of last missions to the South she nearly died, being taken at unawares by someone younger and faster than she. Elaine only escaped the ambush by luck and skill. Badly shaken, she came back to Tar Valon determined not to go out into the field again, to leave it to younger agents. But the world, and the Wheel, has other ideas. She saved the Amyrlin Seat from an assassination attempt, nearly dying herself. And then word came of preparations of war in the South, with Seanchan mercenaries thrown into the mix. Elaine found herself again on the move, gating down to Lugard so as she could make her was into Illian, disguised as a peddler, so she could make contact with her network and find out what was going on. She left in a state of emotional turmoil. For the first time in her life, Elaine Treherne had fallen in love. It was with her employer, and her friend, and her overlord, Robert Laurel. But she was afraid that he had already lost his heart to another: Sapphira Cairen, the Amyrlin Seat herself. But her life took a different turn while she was in the South. Elaine met Colin Renfrew, the son of an innkeeper who had been one of her longtime informants in Illian. He helped her escape when she was discovered after she found out that Alain of Cairhien was going to turn traitor and betray Robert and his army. Elaine was badly wounded crossing the frontlines near Caemlyn, and it was Colin who kept her alive until she was able to reach a Guard outpost. The Guard's healers managed to stabilize her, and she was able to tell Robert her news before being evacuated to Tar Valon. She's carried a scar and walked with a slight limp ever since. She had a part in the next to last act of the war, the assault on the White Tower itself. The Forsaken Dazar Ayende managed to break the wards on the Tower, and led an assault force into the Amyrlin's very own chambers. Elaine, along with Robert's sister Erin and his daughter Gwen, helped Sapphra killed Dazar. She was not present for the last battle in sight of the City's walls, but she was there when Robert killed Alain in single combat at the gate of Cairhien and accepted the crown of that kingdom from Sapphira's own hands. In secret she helped Sapphira and Erin arranged for Robert's proclamation as High King. Now that the war is over, Elaine has married Colin and has been made a Countess. She is also the Minister of Security for the High Kingdom, which is a fancy new title for her old job, that of Spymaster, responsible only to the High King and Queen. She keeps an eye on both the internal and external enemies of the Kingdom. They are many. Edited by Elaine Treherne, Oct 3 2009, 11:25 PM.

Thanks! That took me most of a week. I plan on doing Gwen's bio over the weekend. That won't be very long, as she's much younger and doesn't have as much life experience. |
