Dhai turned onto his stomach, burying his face in his pillow. It was ridiculously quiet in the tower, and he was unaccustomed to the lack of sound. In the troupe, there was always the sound of nature to lull him to sleep, and now there was only the occasional rustle of fur on stone. With a sigh, he sat up. There was no way he was getting any sleep, and Dhai would rather spend a sleepless night wandering than staring at the wall next to his bed. He swung his feet over the side of the cot, and stood up. It took only a few moments to dress, and then he knelt down to stroke Zere’s head. “Want to go for a walk with me?” He asked her, scratching behind her ears. Dhai could see Zere open one eye in the dark, and laughed. “Come on, Zere. I’d rather not wander alone.” He stood up and turned toward the door, listening to Zere as she roused herself and got up to follow him. “Good girl.” He told her as she nudged his hip with her forehead while he turned the doorknob and took a step out into the hallway. He stepped as quietly as he could through the dormitories. Dhai didn’t particularly like any of the soldiers, and he didn’t trust them not to rat him out if they saw him. The others soldiers were a strange and motley lot, and Dhai didn’t trust men who would willingly channel saidin. They treated him like some sort of circus exhibit, anyway, and Dhai was happy enough just to avoid them. But with Zere pressed up against his side, sneaking through deserted hallways, Dhai almost felt normal again. Nighttime wandering had been common for him and Zere back when he was da’covale in Kalish’s household. He smiled down at Zere as they passed into the usually crowded hallways, which were still brightly lit by torches mounted on the walls. He’d have to be careful, so a servant didn’t spot them, then. It was a welcome challenge, though. There were so few distractions from the strange life he had been pressed into, and Dhai relished the simple act of sneaking about. Two hallways later, Dhai heard them. A masculine pant and laugh assaulted his ears, and Dhai couldn’t help but blink in confusion. Who would be about this time of night, if not a servant? He peeked around the hallway, and was almost paralyzed with shock at the sight. A girl in torn novice whites was pressed up against the wall by a man, who Dhai distantly noted was dressed in the garb of on of the Tower scribes. He was holding the girl’s hands above her head, and pressing up against her in a way that gave no illusions to his intentions. Dhai was about to turn and walk away and leave them to it when he heard the girl pleading. Her screams and shrieks could hardly be misinterpreted, and Dhai turned with a sinking heart to review the situation. He couldn’t help but swallow at the realization, because the girl was twisting in the man’s hold, fighting with him and pleading with him to stop, to let her go. For a moment, he was almost too surprised to move. How could one of the Tower servants even dream of such a thing? The girl was sixteen, maybe seventeen, and the man had to know that Aes Sedai would overlook such an action. But the logic was quickly pushed away by rage, because she was only a girl. Just a girl, who had hardly begun to live, and didn’t deserve this even if she was marath’damane. His hands clenched into fists, his knuckles turning white, because he had seen this often enough when he was da’covale. He had seen women being forced before, had seen the mess it had left them in, and he had no stomach to just watch and let it happen. “Zere.” Dhai murmured, looking down at the tiger. She blinked back up at him, confusion evident in her emotions, because she could feel both his anger and cold calculation through the bond. “Kill him, Zere.” He told her, brushing one hand lightly down her face before giving her a command she couldn’t possibly not recognize. Her emotions burst into something heady, pure pleasure that he had finally let her loose to hunt. Dhai rejoiced in it, because the man deserved to die, and there was nothing he liked better than to give Zere what she wanted. The tiger shot forward, paws hitting the tile with cool thunks of flesh as she pounced, her claws sinking into the man’s back and raking down. “Kill him.” He whispered, dimly noting the terror present in the novice’s screams as Zere pulled the man away from her. There was no way for the man to fight, and Dhai didn’t even pity him while he watched the blood flow, watched Zere literally tear him apart. She played with him first, with careful bats of claw. The tiger let him scramble away, before pouncing again, claws and teeth at the ready. The two of them left a trail of blood, leading almost to Dhai’s feet. Only when the man was close enough to reach out and touch Dhai’s boots in a plea for help did Zere move for the kill, and Dhai couldn’t help but love her for it. |
