The war was over and life was beginning to settle down. After everything that had happened, Adena was relieved. She was glad that the war was over and done with, and of course, she was glad that the Towers had not been destroyed. She was also glad the Aes Sedai were back in the Tower and able to teach the Accepted and help with novice classes. It meant that she had days like today, when she had no classes to teach, and all her lessons with sisters were over before lunch. She had done a little laundry in the beginning of the afternoon, and now she was going to enjoy what might be one of the last warm summer nights Tar Valon saw. She had to wear her Accepted dress of course, and people in Tar Valon did not take Accepted for Aes Sedai simply because of their ring, but she was sure she would still be able to have a fine evening. If there was one thing Adena could change, it would be to have more income here. Some of the girls from noble families- those whose families knew where they were -received a small stiped. The Towers let it pass, as long as it was not large. Adena, however, did not receive such an income, and had to save her pennies. That meant, unfortunately, that the instances were rare when she could go to the types of inns she was most comfortable in. But soon, she hoped, she would be Aes Sedai, and then she would not have to worry about money, for surely the Tower would provide her with what she needed. Tonight, though, she was Accepted. But as it was the end of summer, and she might not have a chance like this again, she intended to splurge a little. She pulled her straigt black hair into a complicated knot- one she could not have dreamed of doing herself when she was a novice. She had had servants to do this kind of thing for her at home, but once she had accepted her life in the Tower, she also had to accept the lack of servants in most instances. Still, she could not completely leave behind her old ways, so she had taught herself some of the details that she missed, and she did dearly love for her hair to look nice. She also loved nice furniture and beautiful dresses, but she contented herself with the hair- at least until she was Aes Sedai. Things would change then. It was a promise she made to herself, and she intended to keep it. Oh, she had plenty of other reasons for becoming Aes Sedai, goals and things she wanted to do, but if she were honest, she was looking forward to going back to life of relative finery and comfort. She looked in the slightly bubbled mirror above her washstand and nodded in satisfaction at her hair. Maybe not quite as good as the servants at home could have done it, but they did not have to reach behind their own heads either. Pleased, she stepped out into the warm early fall air in the Accepted well and saw a clear blue sky with a bright sun now definitely moving toward the horizon, but still with a fair amount of daylight left. She made her way down the stairs into the simple garden the Accepted had, and out into the Tower Gardens. She walked slowly, not in a hurry, but intending to enjoy every minute of her free evening. She picked a pretty orange daisy from one plant and stuck it behind her ear. Not exactly permitted, but Adena figured that since she was going into the city there would be little opportunity for her to be called out for it. Aes Sedai were a little more lenient in the city, and even in the Tower wearing a flower was not an offense to send one of the Accepted to the Mistress of Novices. She made her way through the Tower and out into the city proper, with a little nod for the guards as she passed. Once in the city, she wandered through the streets, admiring the Ogier- and Power-built buildings and the reality-defying nature of so many of them. At some point, she intended to get something to eat and a drink of real wine- not the watered-down stuff the Accepted were given in the Tower -but there was plenty of time. She wished she could shop, wanted to be fit for dresses more than she would have thought possible, but she did not have the money to buy, and no seamstress would be pleased with her if she lied to them. Besides, Accepted could not buy dresses, and Adena suspected the seamstresses knew that, so there was no use anyway. So she contented herself with walking, and thinking of all the things she was going to do when she finally earned the shawl, hoping that day was not too far away. |

(((OOC: SO RUSTY!))) Sarecer had been stuck in his office for days and finally decided it was time to get out for a bit. With the war over he had to catch up on paperwork that he had let slide in his efforts to direct Aman Val into the best places to inflict the most damage to the enemy. Standing from his desk he took his thoughts and left to Black Tower, and entered the city. He usually liked to sit in a quiet place and think but impulse took him to the City. With the War done with new problems had arrived. He was probably the oldest person in the Towers and with his age came memories. He remembered stories of Hawking and how he had laid siege to Tar Valon putting a bounty on Aes Sedai. He remembered the Seanchan invasion before the last battle began. How they tried to conquer all the lands from the Sea of Storms to the Mountains of Doom. Now a new empire had begun and he feared what might become of the lands, he did not approve of it and had decided to appose it if Robert acted against what the Towers wanted. He lost himself in unhappy thoughts as he walked through the city. It must have been an hour or more since he left his office. He was deep into the city's merchant district when he came back from his thoughts. He looked around to get his bearings and spotted a young accepted walking around. Normally he wouldn't bother with them, he thought those with out the Dragon pin or the shawl where below him. He walked up to the brown haired girl and called out to stop her. It was obvious who he was his uniform showing his office of Rei. "What are you doing in the city?" He asks his voice deep, his eyes searching for any reaction in her movements. |

Adena walked through the shops and stalls that made up the expansive merchant district of Tar Valon. It was very possible to forget that this city was built on an island. A large island, true, but still. It was a huge city, teeming with people from all different nations, and even though the war had been over for a year, it seemed like people were still working harder to make up for lost time. Very likely, Adena realized, they were, they had four years' of lost business to account for. Likely some of them never would. Not that it really mattered to Adena just then. She could walk around the shops all she wanted, wishing for the money to buy something nice, but it would change nothing. Truly, she should have just found an inn and ordered her meal. But the things were so nice, Adena could not simply walk away from them. She found herself looking over various wares, bolts of silk, little decorations, bowls and knives, and choosing which ones she would buy when she was raised. When she was finally Aes Sedai. The days- years -when she had wanted nothing more than to get out of the Tower seemed like a story she had been told about someone else. Now she wanted to be a sister. She wanted a blue-fringed shawl, and she wanted to tell people in Amadicia that channeling was the mark of the Dark One. Other countries too, especially now that the Children of the Light had moved their headquarters into Arad Doman, but mostly Amadicia, mostly her home. Somewhere deep down, Adena recognized that she wanted her family to know she was alright. She wanted to tell them she was Aes Sedai and have them be proud of her. That would never happen though, and because she knew that truth would hurt to badly, she kept the desire for approval buried deep down where it was not dangerous. As she walked and admired the merchants' wares, she dreamed of the day she would become Aes Sedai. Surely that day could not be too far away. She was certainly old enough, she was nearly forty years old! Very young by Aes Sedai standards, and in her heart, Adena did not feel close to forty, and she did not look much more than twenty two. But forty was old for Accepted, although not so old when you considered that she had been a wilder for six years before coming to the Tower. Still, nineteen years as an initiate was enough! She was more than ready to move on to the next stage of her life. Adena was looking at a particularly fine looking rug when she heard a voice behind her call out "Accepted." She turned quickly, and saw an Asha'man in full uniform standing there. The Rei al'Aman Val by the bands on his arms. "What are you doing in the city?" He asked, his voice deep. Adena had never met this man, but she knew him. Everyone knew Asha'man Sarecer, Rei al'Aman Val, and although it was considered very rude to think about it, the oldest channeler in the Towers. Adena dipped a perfect curtsy for this high-ranking Asha'man, suddenly aware of the orange flower in her hair. Her mother had taught her how to curtsy, the Towers had made it habit. "Asha'man Sarecer," she said as she rose. "I had some free time this afternoon, and I thought I would enjoy a warm evening in Tar Valon before winter covers it. I hope that's not a problem," she added truthfully. She could think of no reason why this man would care if she spent an evening in the city- if it was an issue for anyone, it would be the Mistress of Novices -but she certainly did not want to cause any trouble for herself. She had done nothing wrong, she was perfectly allowed to be in the city if she had nothing pressing in the Towers. Oh, the Aes Sedai would prefer her to spend her time studying of course, but Adena could only study so much. She did well enough in her classes, not the best, but certainly not the worst, and she thought she could justify one night out. Still, she was nervous at being addressed by as powerful an Asha'man as a Rei, and she was afraid it showed. She had been practicing Aes Sedai cool calm for seven years, but she did not always have it down just right. She had best learn quickly though, if she wanted to be raised to Aes Sedai within the year. What better chance to practice than this? |

Watching the girl carefully, he runs the callused fingers of his left hand through his hair trying to keep it out of his face. Once more thinking of cutting his hair short, but he ignores that idea like he had for the past one hundred years or so. He liked the way his silver hair looked at the length it was. Silver-gray hair was a mark of great age in the Towers. Many of the older members of the Towers only held a little grey. But his hair marked him as ancient a relic from another time. Most Aes Sedai and Asha'man get really uppity about their age, for Sarecer though his age is a mark of pride. He had out lived almost all the men he knew as a Soldier and Dedicated, old age, battle or back stabbing had taken them. "I had some free time this afternoon, and I thought I would enjoy a warm evening in Tar Valon before winter covers it. I hope that's not a problem," The girl in front of him said bringing him back from his thoughts. Arching an eyebrow at her, he studies her carefully for a moment. "Back when I was your age." He says after a moment, "We did not have free time enough to run wild in the City." "Come along." He says turning and beginning to walk down the street knowing that Adena will keep pace with him. "You look close enough to the Shawl. " he says turning his head to regard her. "I know it is frowned upon to speak such, but frankly I do not care." There were not many customs that he held to firmly too. He had always done what he pleased. That was probably what had landed him in trouble sixty years ago. He missed the Ogier that he had lived with but he didn't think he could stand not being able to feel the source once more. It had tutored him for years until the feeling had dulled. But now that he could feel it once more he would not loose it, at almost any cost he would keep it. "I am sure you know who I am, but I have not a clue who you are. What is your name girl?" |

Adena stood very still as she waited for this infamous Asha'man to say something. He did not look upset, but his with his arched eyebrow, more like a Brown studying an insect or plant she had not seen before. Intrigued maybe, thoughtful, maybe pondering what to do with what he had found. It was difficult not to squirm under that gaze, try as she might to remind herself that she was not a new novice. Thankfully, she did not have to endure long. After a moment, Sarecer replied that when he was her age, they did not have time to run around in the City. Adena wondered whether he had even trained in the City- he had been alive before the Dragon Reborn left this world, she knew that much, but had he been Asha'man before that? The Black Tower had not been built in Tar Valon until the Dragon left, but although Adena knew that Asha'man Sarecer was old, she did not know if he was old enough to have trained in the Black Tower when it was still a farm in Andor. Still, she did not ask, and she did not protest, would not have even if the Asha'man had not told her to come with him. He turned and began to walk, and Adena quickly followed after him, surreptitiously pulling the flower from behind her ear and dropping it to the street. Maybe she would not have gotten in trouble for it, but Adena saw no reason to push her luck with this man. After a moment, Sarecer said that Adena looked close to the shawl, saying also that he did not care whether it was polite to speak of or not. Adena simply nodded, she certainly hoped she was close to the shawl, but the Mistress of Novices did not often take it upon herself to tell girls when their testing was close. Maybe a hint occasionally, but Adena had received no such hints- she tried not to think about that when she considered how soon she might be raised. So she kept her mouth shut, besides, Sarecer had not seemed to desire or expect her input after that comment, she wondered slightly if it was for her benefit, or his own, or anyone's at all. After another moment, Sarecer made a comment that this time clearly required an answer from Adena, if a simple one. "Yes, I know who you are Asha'man. I'm Adena Moren," she said quietly. Timidly, if she were honest with herself. Light, even with Aes Sedai and Asha'man she should be able to converse, she would have to be able to if she wanted to do any good once she was raised. Sounding timid was certainly not an Aes Sedai trait! Still, with this Asha'man she could almost imagine that the Amyrlin herself would be a little timid. Sapphira was a woman Adena had only seen a few times, and who seemed to be a rock solid leader, but would she seem different compared to Sarecer? Would even the Amyrlin tread softly around this man? Adena did not know, but she did know that she was no Amyrlin Seat, and she was certainly going to be careful. She wondered where Sarecer was taking her and looked around the street. She had been in the City quite a few times, but not often enough to know her way around very much of it. So she followed and observed the people and the city, and wondered what was going to happen next. This was certainly not what she had planned on when she decided to spend an afternoon in the City. She had hoped to relax a little, and being suddenly set upon by possibly the most intimidating Asha'man in the Black Tower as if she were doing something of which he disapproved was certainly not her idea of relaxing! She hoped that wherever he was taking her would not take too long, and she certainly hoped he was not taking her to the Mistress of Novices. If he was, she doubted she would be punished- she had done nothing wrong! -but she also very much doubted she would be able to come back into the city today, or any time soon. If the Aes Sedai decided she was spending too little time studying, they would make sure she had less free time, never mind that today was the first time in years she had been in the City. |
