Lyla walked in the hall, and entered a room where she was supposed to train her mentee, Shaya. The room was pretty empty, with only a carpet and two chairs, but she didn't think they'll need more. She used waves or air to put the chairs in one corner, she always thought teaching while sitting on a comfortable carpet is nicer then teaching on hard, wooden chairs. She sat in the middle of the room, put the basket she brought near her, and started taking out stuff from it. Two glasses, a bottle of spiced wine, and a plate with cookies, the cook's best. She didn't want to go into training immediately. She wanted to know her mentee first, she never even saw the girl before. Talking over wine and cookies would be a nice start, she thought. She hoped Shaya would think the same. Playing with the folds of her dress, Lyla hoped the girl wouldn't be too long. She never liked waiting, though most people wouldn't see it on her. Her Aes Sedai serenity made it look as if she could wait for years till something happened, she was told once. She continues playing with the folds of her dress, as she always did when she was thinking about something and had nothing to do with her hands. This time she was thinking of what will she talk about with the Novice, and, later, how she will start the teaching. (ooc- sorry it's not that long.. and that it took me so long, lol) |

(ooc: I'm sooo sorry I never replied, I just didn't think to look here because I thought they were the training halls for the red shen!! *hangs head in shame* ) Shaya was not one to loose her calm easily, but this afternoon she got a few curious stares as she ran through the hallsways with her skirts hitched up. She had been looking forward to her channeling lessons with exitement and impatience, counting the seconds to when she would finally be able to experience the feeling she had heard so much about already. And ofcourse her roommate just had to forget to give her the notice when it finally came through. It was by sheer accident that Shaya happened to return to her room because she had ruined her dress while scrubbing the pots in the kitchens and happened to catch her name on the parchment lying on the dresser. Uttering a few heartfelt curses she had thrown on a new novice dress and was running down the halls before the fabric had properly settled on her body. Now that the moment was there, exitement was mixing with a hint of nervousness. Butterflies were playing catch in her stomach and she willed herself to slow down as she came up to the door. Smoothing her hair and taking a few breaths, she felt a quick hint of panic as she suddenly had the awful thought that the Keeper might have given up waiting and had left by now. Cursing her roommate under her breath again, she lifted her hand and knocked on the door. Better be on your best behaviour now woman! A lot depended on how quickly she would be able to channel. At first she had thought that the quicker she learned, the quicker they would release her from the Tower. Now that she had learned a bit more about the possibilities of the Power, she thought it would benefit her to know a few things on the outside as well. It sometimes alarmed her as she realised that the thought of running away from the Tower seemed to pop up in her mind less and less as the weeks went on. She kept telling herself that she had to remember that she was dragged here against her will, ripped out of her existence at the height of her career. But then there was all this precious and valuable knowledge that was poured out onto her and Shaya found herself soaking it up like a water on a dry desert floor. Relief washed over her as she heard the acknowledgment to enter from within, at least the Keeper had waited. Although it might be even worse to find an Aes Sedai kept waiting then not find one at all. Shaya steeled herself for what was to come and pushed open the door. She swept a very low curtsie and kept her eyes downcast respectfully. Best to look as meek and obedient as she could. "Shaya Blackrose, at your service, Keeper." |

There was a knock at the door, and Lyla realized she was playing with the folds of her dress again. "come in," she said. She stilled her hands, looking at the door, hoping it's the Novice at last. it took her long enough. Lyla thought, but her irritation didn't show on her face. The Novice came in, panting, and her skirts were unarranged. She was running to get here on time, that was obvious. At least the girl wasn't like herself when she was a Novice. She used to think she could do what she wanted, just because her father was a High Noble in Altara. She used to walk in the tower grounds thinking she owned the place, and used to be mad for days when Aes Sedai and Asha'man taught her it's not so, in different ways. Three years it took her to realize that she was a lowly Novice, and was treated like a child, because that was what a Novice was – a child. The Novice curtsied, and she motioned with her hand to the floor in front of her. The Novice sat down. "Shaya Blackrose" Lyla Said while putting one glass in from of the Novice, one in front of her, and poured the wine into the glasses. "That’s a pretty name. I am Lyla ay'Yam, and I'm to be your mentor, as you must have been told. But before we start the lessons, I want to know a bit about you. Where are you from? What do you like to do with your time? Anything you want to tell me." Lyla siled pleasantly, and offered the Novice the plate of cookies. "You want some?" with a bigger grin, she took one for herself and started nibbling it, waiting to see the Novice's respond. |

Shaya counted her blessing as it seemed her mentor was not too upset with her. If she was slightly surprised at the instructions to sit on the floor, she did not show any of it in her expression. She folded her legs underneath her and pulled the skirt of her dress over her legs as she sat down. The carpet was thick and warm and Shaya naturually fell into the familiar position she took when sitting down to clear her mind before a big job. She quietly observed her mentor as she busied herself with setting out glasses. The woman was taller than she was, but then most were. Standing just over five and a half feet herself, she usually had to look up to people. Her mentor's long dark hair fell straight over her shoulders and was only slightly lighter than her own and as she looked up to pour the wine, Shaya noticed that their eyes were close to indentical in color. Ofcourse Lyla held herself with the grace and dignity of any Aes Sedai and the Keeper to boot, but there was a natural grace to her way of moving that suggested she had been brought up knowing the ways of a lady. There was no arrogance on her face, but the gesture she made when she told Shaya to sit down, spoke of someone who was used to giving orders and being obeyed. Shaya took all these details in and filed them away to form an opinion later. Lyla filled their glasses and then offered her a plate with cookies. The smell that wafted from them told Shaya that they must be freshly baked and even though she did not have a huge sweettooth, she took one from the plate politely, nodding her head in thanks respectfully. She lay down the cookie next to the glass of wine for now and silently wondered if wine was a traditional bevarage to serve with training sessions. She liked her wine, that much was true, but she thought the average novice must be barely old enough to have stopped drinking milk, let alone wine. Shaya already knew it was very unusual to be as old as she was and not have channeled yet. But then.. how would she know if she had? She pushed the thoughts away as she realised her mentor had spoken and was waiting for her answer. Shaya nearly grimaced. Questions about her past were always tricky. She had to assume the Keeper was aware of how and under what cicrumstances she had been found and brought to the Tower, but very few knew the extent of her.. "career" before she got caught by the Blue sister. To win some time she picked up the glass and lifted it to her mouth. As the glass came close, she could distinctly smell the spices that had been put in the wine and her suspicous nature instantly sounded all alarm bells. Is she trying to drug me? She smoothly changed the movement into swirling the wine in her glass and held the glass in her lap. There was no motivation for her mentor to want to poison her, but she would wait till she drank from her own glass first, nonetheless. "I'm afraid there is not much to tell Lyla Sedai, I never really knew my parents and I have travelled a lot since I was a child. It would be hard to say where I'm from exactly. " She gave a friendly smile as her mind spun around the questions. Best to dance away from the subject of her past as subtly and graciously as she could. "I worked as an acrobat in a travelling show for a while, which I very much enjoyed. I really liked working with the animals as well, although I never seemed to be able to get friendly with the dogs." Thinking back she thought that had been quite strange. "As for what I like to do with my time..... I very much like to read, I will pretty much read anything I can get my hands on." She looked down into the glass of wine as she tried to think of the things she did when she had time to herself. "I very much love horseriding, even though I never owned my own horse or anything." Caies had never allowed her to get attached to something like that, they would change horses as much as they changed towns, never leaving anything behind that could be tied to them later. "I have always liked games of any kind, cards, dice, puzzles I guess I like things that challenge me to think." She gave a selfconsious shrug and a half grin. She felt akward talking about herself like this, as if she was giving away pieces of herself by revealing the information. Her hand trailed down and played with the hem of her skirt. |

Lyla examined the girl in front of her quickly as she set down. Her Saldaean features made it obvious who were her parents, though she could have been born some place else. She was slightly shorter then herself, and was older them most Novices at this point. She was a bit shocked when she heard that her mentee was 23 years old. She herself was six years a Novice at that age, already accustomed to her place in the Tower. Not that she had liked it, but she had learned to live with it. Lyla noticed that the Novice didn't eat nor drink, and wondered why. is she afraid I would poison her? she thought jokingly to herself. That would be unheard of, and pointless. Why would she want to poison her mentee? Lyla smiled at the girl, and took a sip of the whine. It might not be the best thing to give to Novices usually, but Shaya was not as young as Novices were usually, and the wine was watered enough to suit any young girl who had never drank more then milk in her life. The wine was too weak for her taste, but its spicy scent was good, and this was the reason she had brought it with her. Her cookie was long gone, and she looked at the plate of cookies as if wanting to take another, then decided not to. Shaya didn't even eat the first one, Lyla didn't want to eat in front of her face while the Novice ate nothing. It was just not proper. "I'm afraid there is not much to tell Lyla Sedai," the girl said, but to Lyla's skilled eyes, what Shaya left unsaid was as much as what she had said. She had no easy life, as Lyla's life was, and it was obvious she didn't want to talk about it. if she does not want to talk about it, we won't talk about it. she decided. "Do you find the Tower to your liking? Do you want to learn how to use Saidar?" she asked. Those were important questions. it would be much harder to teach a Novice who doesn't want to be taught, a Novice who doesn't even want to be in the Tower, such as she herself was, though she had given up trying to escape after the first time, soon after she got to the Tower and before she started her studies. Her father's soldiers' punishments were one thing, the Aes Sedai's quite another. |

"Do you find the Tower to your liking?" Shaya had just taken a sip from her wine, following her mentor's example. The spices were strong, even though the wine itself had obviously been watered down. That explained for it's use during training then. As her mentor asked first question, Shaya nearly choked on that mouthful of wine. Might as wel ask a convict if he was enjoying his dungeon. She carefully swallowed the wine and dabbed her mouth delicately to make sure nothing spilled on her dress. Her mentor must be aware of the fact that most girls did not have a lot of choice when they came to the Tower. She often heard the younger girls crying at night, mostly missing their families or over some particularly harsh punishment. Shaya was usually smooth enough to escape punishment like that. Her first week had been different. The blue sister that had brought her to the Tower, had followed her around like a shadow. It was only her solemn promise to find and make her regret it that kept Shaya from trying to run away. By now she was too intrigued by this whole channeling business to leave. But to ask her if she enjoyed the Tower like it was some expensive inn, was going a bit far. She was still bitter over the fact that she had been reduced to scrubbing dishes and doing laundry when she had been dining with the richest men in the land only weeks ago. Dining and relieving them of their fat purses... She missed the mental challenge of those games, missed the constant danger that lurked in every corner. Although the classes made up for a lot. She loved learning about things she had never thought possible before. She thought about her mentor's questions as these thoughts flashed through her mind and maybe she had misunderstood. She had not actually asked if Shaya was enjoying herself, she had merely asked if she liked the Tower. The Tower was impressive for sure. When they rode up and Shaya had stopped giving her escort hateful stares long enough to look at it in wonder, the Blue had told her that most of it had been create with the Power. "The tower is truely magnificent, Aes Sedai. I have never seen the like. I am still amazed by it most days and I have been here for a good while now." It was true, especially places like the library or the gardens where the tall spire of the white Tower rose up like something that the creator had placed on earth, never ceased to amaze her. "Have you been in the Tower long yourself Aes Sedai? If you don't mind me asking?" She wondered if she would still be so awed by it all if she had been here longer. The second question her mentor asked her, did not need a lot of thinking. "Oh yes, I am very much looking forward to learning what I can do with the power." She tried to stay dignified about the whole thing, but could help the eager smile on her face at the thought of finally learning to channel like everyone around her. "How long do you think it will take before I can properly channel?" To Shaya it couldn't happen fast enough. Just the thought of being able to lite candles from a distance like she had seen Accepted and Aes Sedai do would be worth it. As she waited for her mentor to reply, she picked up the cookie and bit into it, carefully holding her hand under her mouth so she would not spill crumbs everywhere. The cookie actually tasted much better than she had expected and before long she found she had finished it. Briefly putting her finger in her mouth, she picked up a few crumbs with it that had escaped her hand somehow. |

OOC: OMG, I"m soooo sorry! I was sure I posted here for some odd reason... :\ *** It seemed that after her first sip Shaya was relieved, and the girl took a sip from her glass, only to choke on it as she heard Lyla's question. Lyla had hoped the Novice would not a rebel, of the kind who wants only to run away from the Tower and cares nothing about training or her own safety. It was not unusual to have girls of that kind in the Tower, she herself had been one for the first few years. Yet, she didn't think there was a girl in the Tower who didn't miss her life before she came there. Family, friends… every girl lost something dear when she got to the White Tower, but gaining control on Saidar, becoming Aes Sedai, made the bargain fair, sometimes even more, to most girls. Shaya's answer quieted her mind a bit, though. "The tower is truely magnificent, Aes Sedai. I have never seen the like. I am still amazed by it most days and I have been here for a good while now." The Novice was not lying, and a girl who had all her mind on running away would never see the marvels of the Tower. "I've been to the Tower for more then 100 years" she told the Novice. "And sometimes, especially after being away from it, I am amazed by it. It is a wondrous place." It is home, she thought to herself. Even when she was a newly raised Aes Sedai, traveling the world, she had not stopped once in her father's house in Altara, he had sent her away from her home, and made her realize that home was not where your house is, but where you long to be, where your friends are. "How long do you think it will take before I can properly channel?" Shaya was eager to learn, that much was obvious. Lyla smiled. "How long it will take before you can channel depends on many things," she told the Novice. "Have you ever channeled before? Can you empty your mind from thoughts? Can you surrender to Saidar?" she looked at the girl carefully. "Some girls have blocks. Every girl goes by her own pace, by the pace hat is good and safe for her. There is no such thing as slow pace, or a slow learner." All her attention was given to her Mentee, and she didn't notice her hands playing the folds of her skirt again, not until she finished talking. She put her hands in her lap, and made sure they would not move from there, to play with the folds of her dress as a ten-years-old wearing her pretty dress. Lyla looked at Shaya. The girl didn't seem to notice, she was thinking of answers to the questions. Lyla waited for her answers, knowing that after the Novice answered, they would start the lesson. |

Shaya listened thoughtfully as Lyla answered her questions and turned them over in her mind. The first one was easy. "No Aes Sedai, I have never channeled before.. I think... " Truth was that she wasn't sure, but she assumed she hadn't or if she had, it had not been magnificent enough to notice. With the second question it began to become tricky already. Usually there were so many thoughts racing through her mind in rapid succession that she wondered how anyone managed to think of nothing for very long. Even as she tried, she realised she was thinking about not thinking! She nearly fidgeted in irritation with herself at finding she could not even manage such a simple feat. Shaking her head again she said: "It seems I might have to practice at emptying my mind, it seems harder than it sounds." The Aes Sedai's third question seemed odd to her. Saidar was still a very abstract idea to her. She had no idea what this "Power" felt like, how it worked. How could you surrender yourself to something you did not understand or did not know how to call upon? Shaya had never thought herself the surrendering kind anyway. Silently she thought she would make the Power obey her if she had to battle her way through it all the way, never mind surrender. Surrender was for those young girls at the tower who still cried over everything. She had fought for nearly everything in her life, she would manage fighting this as well. "I guess I will have to try, Lyla Sedai. I'm sure it cannot be that hard." She gave a worried frown as she wondered how essential the "empty mind" part would be. |

The girl didn't wait before answering the first question. "No Aes Sedai, I have never channeled before... I think..." Usually Novices with the Spark came to the Tower thinking they had never channeled, and some of them where right. It depended on what age where they when they came to the Tower, mostly. Considering Shaya's age, she probably had channeled before, even if she's not aware of it. Lyla saw the girl was hesitating before answering the second question, and smiled to her after hearing the answer. Most girls found it hard in the beginning, but then again, most of them realized that what made it so hard was the fact that they thought about how hard it was. "I'm sure it would not be as hard as you imagine." She told Shaya. Hearing the third answer though, the smile was gone from Lyla's face to be replaced by serenity. "I guess I will have to try, Lyla Sedai. I'm sure it cannot be that hard." Something in the girl's face told her that the girl didn't think much of surrendering to Saidar. She will have a hard time if that notion would not change. Lyla opened her mouth to say she should not underestimate the power of Saidar, but changed her mind. From her experience she knew that just telling her would not help. Shaya had to feel it on her own to know. "Well then," she said instead. "Let us start." "Think of a rose bud." She told the Novice, a monotonic tone in her voice. "Clear your mind from every other thought. Focus only on the rose bud. Think about its colour, its size. There is only the rose bud, and nothing else. Now feel the sun, coming from above the bud. Feel the warmth of the sun. Feel the petals, how they open to the sun, how they welcome the sun and embrace its rays. You are the rose. Saidar is the sun. Surrender to Saidar. Surrender to the sun." Lyla looked at the Novice. She hoped that wasn't too fast for her. It didn't matter. She would repeat it again and again until the Novice gets it. |

Shaya nodded and obediently closed her eyes. Thinking of a rosebud was easy enough, she had always had a very vivid imagination. She could see the dark red bud easily, little beads of dew pearling on it's petals. The green stem a bright contrast against the deep red of the velvety flower. She could even make the bud turn round. As Lyla spoke of feeling the sun, she nearly smiled. How nice would it be to sit outside now and feel the sun on her face? Focus! She forced herself to concentrate on the flower again, a little frown starting to marr her brow. She made the rosebud a bit bigger and tried to imagine how the sun would kiss it in the morning. I have to remember to hang out my shifts in the morning.. Shaya nearly ground her teeth in frustration as all these annoying little thoughts kept popping up in her head and distracted her from her goal. "Feel the warmth of the sun. Feel the petals, how they open to the sun, how they welcome the sun and embrace its rays." She strained, but finally managed to picture the delicate petals open in the warm glow of a morning sun. "You are the rose. Saidar is the sun. Surrender to Saidar. Surrender to the sun." I'm the rose? Well.. Caies did always call me his little black Rose.. with that thought she drifted off thinking of her mentor and the image of the rose shattered. She gave a deep sigh and opened her eyes. "I think I almost had it, but I lost it." She grimaced and shook her head. How could something so simple be so hard? She vowed to herself to keep practicing till she could do it. She resolutely closed her eyes again and started over, carefully building up the image of the rosebud. This time it came easier as she knew what it would look like. As soon as she tried to imagine herself as being the rose, the image started to fade and flicker into a picture of how she saw herself. This time she did click her tongue in vexation and again fixed the rose firmly in her mind. She was just about to give up when she thought she felt ... something as she imagined reaching out to the sun. Was there the merest hint of a tingle on her skin? She reached out with everything she had and tried to grab that hint of light she could barely sense. The more she tried to catch it though, the further away it went and pretty soon she had also lost the image again. She let out a deep breath and made an effort to smooth her brow as the fierce frown was giving her a headache. "I thought I felt something there for a second, but it's gone now." Her shoulders slumped slightly as she had to admit defeat. |

Lyla watched as the girl closed her eyes and did as the exercise she gave her. She had never liked those parts much. The interesting things would be once Shaya would be able to hold the source, and she could start learning about the weaves. But that was for later. Shaya had a frown on her face now, as if something did not work quite right for her. Lyla heard her sigh, and the girl opened her eyes. "I think I almost had it, but I lost it." The Novice said. It was alright, actually. No Novice could be able to do more on the first try. Lyla opened her mouth to tell her mentee that, but before she said a word, Shaya closed her eyes again, to try once again feeling Saidar. She was determined, and Lyla could tell she'll make a good Aes Sedai one day - the girl would not give up easily. This time, Lyla looked at the Novice more closely, and to her practiced eye it was clear – the girl had trouble concentrating. Lyla knew it was hard, she herself had problems concentrating at the beginning. She watched even more closely, trying to understand why it was so hard for Shaya to concentrate. If she hadn't looked so closely, she might not have seen it. And she had felt it too – there was a faint glow around the Novice, and she had felt someone holding Saidar. She would not have felt it if she were not so close, but she had. Less then a second later it was gone. Shaya still kept her eyes though, her face strained as if she's trying to reach it again. When Shaya opened her eyes this time, Lyla smiled at her. "I thought I felt something there for a second, but it's gone now." The girl said, and Lyla told her what she had planned to earlier, that most Novices manage more in their first tries, and that she should be worried. Shaya still seemed as if admitting it was defeat, but Lyla saw it as accomplishment. She told her that too, and added "trying for the first times can be a little tiring. Do you want to try again or to rest for few minutes and talk?" (ooc - I'm so sorry, I have to remember that saving posts in word does not mean I've posted them...) |

(ooc: and I have to remember that posts do not come up as unread on these boards
For RP purposes and advancing my character, I'm going to assume we're a couple of weeks ahead now, hope you dont mind!! )As Shaya once more entered the now well familiar room, she hoped Lyla Sedai would be pleased with her progress. She had practiced her meditation techniques untill she thought she was going blue in the face and even though she would have like to be able to do more, at least now should could actually hold on to the power for a couple of minutes, before her concentration lapsed and it escaped her again. Hopefully now Lyla Sedai would think she was ready to learn a few basic weaves, for she had no idea how to go from holding the power to actually doing something with it. She smiled and made the appropriate curtsy to her mentor before sitting herself down in the usual position. She waited respectfully for Lyla to start their session, it would be not be appropriate for her to go rattling off before being invited to do so. She had had a few strange experiencies while trying to grasp the power that she wanted to ask Lyla about, although she had to be careful what she said, for novices were not allowed to grasp the source without permission. She had been mainly focussing on finding it easier to be relaxed enough, but in doing so, she had still filled herself with the power. Shaya's eyes shone as she thought about that first moment she had completely and fully been filled with Saidar. It had been such a grand moment, that she had cried about it afterwards. Even after everything everyone had told her, no one could have prepared her for the feeling of joy and extacy as she felt Saidar running through her. All her senses were doubled and the world suddenly seemed full of colors, as if for the first time in her life she could really see. It took an effort not to grin as she thought about it, being cut of from advancing her technique now would be truly disasterous! Shaya turned to her mentor, eager to proceed with their lessons. |

It had been few weeks since their first meeting, and Lyla was sitting on the carpet waiting for Shaya to arrive, for another lesson. The girl was getting better and better with holding Saidar, and Lyla thought they might try some basic waves today, though first in line would be the elements. The door opened, admitting Shaya. The girl sat down, and Lyla spoke. "Good morning, Shaya." Shaya was eager to start, she saw, so she wasted no more time. Lyla grasped Saidar, and wove all five elements in the shape of a small flat circle. Out of the circle she pulled five threads, each made of a different element. She laid it on the floor between her and Shaya, so Spirit pointed to her, on the right side she had Fire and then Water, and on her left was Earth and then Air. After finishing, she looked at the Novice and said, "holding Saidar is nice and all, but you know that you can't really do anything with it unless you know how to wave it. Every action requires a different wave, but all waves are made of the elements. "There are five elements," she continued. "Water, Air, Spirit, Fire and Earth. Some waves require only one element, some more, and some require all of the elements – those are the most complicated ones. We will start with the basic ones, but right now I want you to look at this star shaped thing I made here. Each thread is made of one element – each a different one. I want you to think, to see if you can recognize which thread is what element: Earth, Water, Air, Fire and Spirit. If you can't feel it, try holding the source – it usually helps the first few times." Lyla smiled at the girl, watched her examine the flows, and waited for her response. |
