Mika and Shaya's room (WT Dormitories); It's a novice thing ;)

Shaya scowled, it wasn't the first time during her stay in the Tower they had made her change rooms, but for one she would be glad not to be the one to have to move. She had sort of gotten used to having the room to herself for a long time and she was not sure she was looking forward to the idea of company. Yet if the Mistress of Novices told you to move, you didn't ask why. She sighed softly and pushed her way inside the new room she had been appointed. It was just another novice room, although the window was actually on the other side now. At least that meant she wouldn't be woken up by the flamin' sun shining through the window in the morning.

Both of the beds were immaculately made up, so there was no way of telling which one of them was being inhabited. She hung the few dresses they had left her up in the closet and sat down on one of the beds. It was nearly time for classes anyway, so with a bit of luck her encounter with her new roommate would be postponed for a bit. She went over the ranks of novices in her mind and wondered who they had saw fit to pair her up with. She grimaced as a couple of faces passed her mind's eye that she definitely would not care for as a roommate.

Not that there was much she could do about it if it turned out to be one of those. She especially disliked some of the nobly born novices. They always had to make sure everyone knew their families were rich and that they were better than everyone else. Ofcourse Shaya still lied about where she came from, she usually danced around the subject and tried to say as little as possible, but she knew most of the novices thought she was a run-away from a noble house somewhere. Shaya smiled to herself. Ofcourse she had done nothing to deny or confirm those rumours even when she heard it whisper she had ran away because she was pregnant and had lost the child because she could channel.
It suited her just fine to have this veil of mystery around her, if that is what you could call it. It kept people from prying into her past too much because they all figured she would not want to talk about it. With little better to do, she got up from the bed and walked over to the window to look at the gardens, that were covered in a thick blanket of snow.

((ooc: sorry that's it's taken me sooooooo utterly long... I hope you're not mad at me :unsure))

"I am afraid, that he is lost. He won't come back." time and time again the words kept ringng in her ears. lost it sounded so hollow, like Cayana sedai had been talking about a pair of shoos... ”he won’t come back”
“why?” Mika softly whispered to the hallway.

Around her people buzzed trough the busy hall, novices and accepted mostly, and an occasional servant or warder, following his Aes Sedai, but those were rare in these parts of the tower.

“Elia” she whispered...
Nothing of the common buzz reached her eyes or her ears though, for Mika was consumed by her thoughts, but in the same time consumed by a void she did not know. To her there was only the way to her room that she knew so well, a place where she would be alone.

“alone... really alone” though spoken ever so soft, the words sounded crude and harsh to her... a truth that she did not wish to face. She had never really been alone before.
True, she had felt miserable and had cried for everyone she knew who had died, her mother, her father... her two other brothers, old mister Toby and his wife... the innkeeper; the wisdom... Betsy their big sheep who would soon have babies... but somewhere inside she knew that, however bad she could feel, there was always the next day when she could sit down in the mess hall, looking strangely at her food and enjoying her brothers company for a while. Talk to Elia... sweet and strong Elia who knew the answer to everything, who’d frown upon her whenever she’d gotten herself into trouble again and who’d inquire as to what she was doing at the stables when she should have been in class.

“Elia” she said once more, softly for no-one to hear.
She was not crying now, no she just walked to her room, her face blank, reflecting the strange void that had absorbed the tangle of emotions that roamed trough her young body and mind. She knew not what to think, only that she needed to go to her room.

Upon entering the familiar door with a small crack near the handle, somewhere Mika registered another person in the room who said something, but her mind was too far away to actually notice Shaya and so Mika just went to her bed and sat down, staring into nothing after hiking up her knees.

“Elia....”

Shaya looked around from where she was looking out the window when the door opened to admit a slightly younger girl with long brown hair. Shaya recognised her, she had been in the Tower for longer than Shaya herself had, but they had never had a chance to speak. She had always thought the girl was very pretty, with the sort of delicate and vulnerable beauty that made men raise armies to protect her. Most of all she was one of the nicer novices, albeit a tad naïve perhaps. Right now she looked as if she had just been run over by a stampede of horses as she sat down on the bed with a blank look on her face. She had the stunned look of someone who just received some extremely bad new and didn’t know how to handle it. Shaya shifted her position uncomfortably. The girl seemed totally unaware of her presence and Shaya had never been very good at dealing with the hurt and grief of others.

For her to show her emotions was a rarity, although the Tower seemed to have a strange effect on her sometimes when it came to that. Moving over from the window she walked over and put a soft hand on the girl’s shoulder. The girl softly whispered a name and Shaya wondered if her pain was over a man she loved. Being a novice in the Tower almost certainly meant she would never see him again, which could account for the girl’s grief. Somehow she didn’t strike Shaya as the type of girl who ran around pining after men though. “Are you alright, sweetie? Is there anything I can do? “ Shaya wondered if she should just leave, even though it was technically her room as well now. She could always go to the mess hall and come back later.

Suddenly a voice made Mika nearlyjump up and surprised she turned her head to the othernovice who was bent over slightly and looked at her curiously.
“Are you alright, sweetie? Is there anything I can do?" she had asked, but Mika had harly remembered the words and so she just looked around for a quick moment to check whether she was actually in the right room. But everything that needed to be there was there and even some more, or so it seemed.

"Shaya?" Mika asked softly, wondering what the other girl did in her room. the other girl was one of them cool, mysterious novices who let little be known about them but were obviously of noble blood. Mika had heard lotses of stories about the dark novice standing in front of her, ranging from the most ridicule ones to those that could have been true... mostly she believed Anika's version, that she in fact had been torn between two lovers, one that she really loved and the other that she had to marry from her parents but who was an ugly brute; and tht in the end the brute had killed her lover and she had, in a fit of pain and anguish touched the One Power and killed the brute with saidin before fleeing off to the White Tower.

"I'll be your new roomie" she said as she sat down on the bed besides Mika ,who now turned to her and nearly fell in her arms as she started crying again.
"he's lost! lost! like some stupid hairbrush! just lost....."

Shaya was taken aback Mika suddenly broke down and started crying. The pain and anguish on the young woman’s face was so vivid that it made Shaya’s heart bleed for her. More on instinct than thought, she reached out and pulled the girl close to her, cradling her in her arms. Mika’s tears soaked through the fabric of her dress where the young woman rested her head, but Shaya hardly noticed. She had obviously lost someone dear to her and from the girl’s tears, Shaya assumed he had not merely left, but was actually dead. She wanted to tell her not to cry, that everything would be all right, but given the circumstances that would be ridiculous. Holding her closer she said instead: “That’s it, let it all out. There is nothing worse than to be left behind when death takes our loved ones.”

Her family might not be dead, or maybe they were for all she knew, but Shaya knew well how terrifying loneliness could be. “Sometimes it helps to talk about it though. Do you feel like telling me about it?” She let the girl sob, gently stroking her soft hair. If Mika wanted to talk about it, she would do it in her own good time. Shaya wondered if there had been an active choice on the Mistress of Novices’ part to put the two of them together and thought it wouldn’t surprise her at all to find it was. Cayana had probably realised that Mika was one of the few novices in the Tower that could make Shaya care about her, most of the other girls Shaya would have gladly ignored.

“That’s it, let it all out. There is nothing worse than to be left behind when death takes our loved ones. Sometimes it helps to talk about it though. Do you feel like telling me about it?”
her face burried within the other ccepteds dress, Mika shook her head, but still she ended up letting everything out as the other girl had told her.

"He had worked so hard on it! he was so good...." she sniffed and muttered while trying to get some sound out of her throath. "He was so good and learned so fast. I never thought my brother ould fail anything what so ever" she shivered and cuddled up closely as her roomie softly ran her fingers over her head, calming her.

For a while Mika just lay there shivering, crying untill after a while everything just became silent, calmly the sniveling and crying stopped and her breathing became calm and steady, indicating that sleep had started to slumber in for the shock and heavy emotions had wore her out completely. Carefully Shaya now lay her down on her bed and tucked her in decently.

She let the girl talk, not interrupting her with questions. For now it was important that she was able to grieve, there would be time for introductions later. When the girl’s sobbing subsided, she gently helped her into bed and tucked her in tenderly. Brushing a strand of hair from the girl’s face she said: “You get some sleep now and maybe things will look different in the morning.” The words must seem empty and hollow to the girl, it was obvious how much she had loved and cared for her brother. Shaya moved to the other side of the room and turned down the oil lamp that dimly lit their little room. As darkness fell across the room she said: “My name is Shaya and I guess we are going to share this room for a bit, so don’t hesitate to wake me up if you need anything. Even if you just want someone to sit up with you or anything, we don’t have to talk if you don’t feel like it.”

She could only imagine how badly shook up the young woman must be, suddenly finding herself alone like that. Shaya changed into her shift and went to bed with mixed feelings. It was unlike her to feel so protective about anyone, but there was a quality about her new roommate, that had made her heart go out to her, apart from the obvious pain she was going through right now. The sheets felt cool against her skin and she let out a small sigh as she lay on her back, staring into the darkness. She wondered if she would be able to sleep at all, but after a while she felt herself nodding off despite everything.
