Nhadnay sat in the class, a class about holidays; by the birds these people were strange, giving classes on everything, was there so much Nhadnay actually needed to know? Actually the young sharan went to very little classes, the asha'man had discovered that it was not exactly useful to keep him in one for he learned nothing of it and could not even take notes or anything let alone coöperate in whatever way. so they'd 'sentenced' him to endles hours in the library or other asha'man or dedicateds studies, learning how to write and read. And now the time ahd come for him to take his first class where he should try to put his new found knowledge to use. "I will expect you to work along and write down answers if you know any to the accepted, she has been informed that you will be in her class and will be observing you Yellow-Britches. do not dissapoint me." So now Nhadnay was putting an effort in his writing; the accepted had asked something she knew, the Feast of Lights... it was by far a common name for firstday, but he remembered having head a athan'miere sailer saying it once. deep in concentration Nhadnay put down the words on a piece of paper and held up his hand to get the teachers attention. As accepted Marian noticed the dark guy in the front raising her hand she put a step closer and accepted the paper he'd given her which said in childish, unpracticed letters: "Firsdey" |

Radgar sat back and listened to the novice explain Bel Tine. Listening intently he realized that he had forgotten a lot of this stuff. How long has it been since I celebrated this? he thought to himself and shook his head. All his years in the service of the darkone really had left him a little out of touch with what those in the light did. He almost laughed at that as he looked at everyone in the room. The teacher, an accepted, started speaking. She explained what Bel Tine was as well as what Winternight was. Winternight that is something he remembered, as she asked the class what kind of celebrations they held for bel tine he kept quiet and listened. He was surprised to find that there were a couple different versions, but all had at least one reoccurring theme. "Let us discuss the Feast of Lights. We recently celebrated this at the Towers, so most of you will be acquainted with it," she said. "Does anyone know the alternate name of the Feast of the Lights? Or perhaps when it takes place?" Radgar nodded his head and thought. He had no idea were to start. He was shocked at his stupidity, Have I really forgotten so much? he berated himself. Out of the corner of his eye he noticed another Soldier move forward with a piece of paper, wondering how he missed him coming in he watched him for a moment. Something was off about him but Radgar couldn’t place it. Looking at his face Radgar nearly jumped out of his chair. Burn me! he exclaimed as he eyed the tattoo’s. What kind of bull-goose fool would do that to themselves? he asked himself as he watched the soldier hand the paper to Marian. What’s on the paper? he asked, I wonder what he doesn’t want the class to know. |

Ildeus could have groaned if he hadn't knew what he was in for. All the pleasant faced and bright-eyed people contrasted against the more stern and even the few that were strange even to him. Those who behaved like good little initiates sickened him. "Let us discuss the Feast of Lights. We recently celebrated this at the Towers, so most of you will be acquainted with it," The Accepted said. "Does anyone know the alternate name of the Feast of the Lights? Or perhaps when it takes place?" Ildeus watched the strange man write the note and pass it on to the Accepted with mild interest. Ildeus flexed his inner eyebrow at the man's scrawl, the misspelling sparked a bit of interest. Ildeus ran his hands over his black leather jerkin and into his red and gold hair. An impulse came to him, he went with instinct and answered the Accepted's question, a slight incline of his arm to signal him participation. "The final and shortest day mark the Feast of Lights. The second day of celebration is occasionally known as First Day." Ildeus titled his head to the other man. "Cairhien is by far the most enthusiastic when it comes to this holiday." Ildeus gave a twisted grin as he turned the one word, those who had experienced it would know full what he meant. Ildeus could remember the lust and the wanton wilds of the city clear enough. It had been one of the better times he had spent with that hack Mcthadius. Ildeus' rusty eyes dulled at the thought of the man, his former mentor and a darkfriend. Ildeus had joined the Towers and just after being asked to become a darkfriend himself and declining in a most final manner. |

Marian slowly noticed a soldier in the back scribbling on a piece of paper. He was an odd thing, tattooed all over. Marian did not even blink, however. She'd gained at least that much control in her novice years, and seeing this boy did not phase her. She was quite curious though, as to who he was. She stepped to see what he was writing. He passed her the paper, and Marian took it from him, reading it. The letters were certainly not well-practiced, but she could make them out, being well trained in writing herself. "Firsdey," it read. She smiled at the soldier. "Correct," she answered. The spelling was a little off, but if she knew anything about Aes Sedai and Asha'man, someone was working to fix that. Marian watched and saw the recruit she recognized raise his hand. "The final and shortest day mark the Feast of Lights. The second day of celebration is occasionally known as First Day," he explained. "Cairhien is by far the most enthusiastic when it comes to this holiday." She nodded. "Very good." After walking back to the front of the class, she began a small lecture on the Feast of the Lights. "The Feast of LIghts is the last day of Danu and the first day of Taisham, as we have already covered. It is called First Day by many. The Feast is a time of giving." She waited while a few of the more attentive students scribbled down notes. Then she went on to teach some more. "Has anyone celebrated High Chasaline?" she asked the class. A few hands went up. "The feast takes place on Taisham, often called 'the Day of Reflection.' As the name implies, you should reflect on the good things in your life, without complaining." She was only briefly outlinining that holiday of course, but she could not go into great detail. After a few soldiers asked questions, she moved on to the next holiday written in her notes. "On the third day of Jumara, some celebrate Chansein. Celebrated in the Borderlands and Arad Domain, it is a day of eating and feasting," she continued. There wasn't much to say about Chansein, though it was an interesting holiday. She hoped she would someday get to celebrate it. Again she paused to move on to the next subject. She talked about the Feast of Abram, and then she explained about Lamma Sor, often called the 'Day of Remembrance.' She continued to tell them about Winternight and Bel Tine, which they had already briefly covered. Finally, when it looked as though some of their hands would fall off from writing, she stopped to ask some questions. "Does anyone know what the Feast of Fools is?" she asked after a moment, when all eyes were on her. "It goes by multiple names, including Festival of Unreason, Festival of Fools, and Foolday, as well." She waited for an answer, hoping someone knew the answer. |

Shaya smirked; she had never liked the Festival of Unreason, as it was called in Saldea. It might have been fun to see nobles and ladies perform menial tasks as their servants commanded them for the day, but everyone knew the servants would pay for it all later anyway. It was a form of hypocrisy and just another excuse for the rich to misbehave. Usually they would find some poor soul who was to dim-witted to know better and crown him the King of Fools, just so everyone could make fun of him or her. Raising her hand she said: “The festival is celebrated in Tammaz or Saven, depending on where you are and I believe it was traditionally meant as a day of contemplation, where people could step in each other’s shoes for a day to find out what it felt like.” In practice very few nobles actually went through with the whole idea of taking orders from their servants once they decided it had stopped being funny. The whole nature of the Festival was a challenge to act outrageous and out of character and it usually ended in violence. Shaya had made it a habit to stay far away from it, unless she desperately needed money. It was easy to lift the odd purse on a busy street festival like that, but the chances of getting raped in some back alley were just as good. Shaya wondered if her view would be different if she had grown up in a family that celebrated the festival as it was intended and could not imagine it making much of a difference. She had experienced the Festivals in many cities at different ages and had taken an instant disliking to all of them. She had taken Marian’s class in order to learn more about them and perhaps find a better understanding for the background and original meaning of them. |

Marian nodded to Shaya's response about the Feast of Fools. "It would be a day in which classes are switched," she continued. "Commoners may give orders while higher class citizens might serve or run errands." Shaya had covered the Feast of Fools fairly well, so Marian felt no need to elaborate. She wondered how many of those in her audience had actually celebrated any of the feasts that she was talking about. At least she knew a few of them knew what she was talking about. She wished that more of them would participate, but Marian wasn't going to go on squawking about that. She cleared her throat, after the scribbling of notes stopped, and she made to move on to the next holidays. She talked about Tirish Adar. The northern people didn't sleep much during the holiday. It was between moons. Most of them didn't know about that one. Marian herself hadn't known much about it until she had studied it in the Tower library. She went on to speak about the Feast of Neman, celebrated in Andor, Cairhien, Tear, and the Borderlands. Marian had celebrated that feast at her own home, though it certainly was not her favorite celebration. Next came the Feast of Freia. Marian had never celebrated that feast, nor had she heard about it, until she had come to the White Tower. Light, she had learned so much coming here. She'd thought that she had been well learned after the governess her mother had set her under for the years before. After that she had traveled with her parents for a time. Light, how could their be so much to know? "Dahan is the anniversary of the ending of the Trolloc Wars," she said. She spoke a bit more about that celebration before continuing to speak about Asadine. "Asadine is a day of fasting. The Borderlands find it a good time to wed," she explained. A few of the novices scribbled on their notes some more. Light, their hands must be falling off, with all the talking I'm doing... "Genshai takes place the third day of Tammaz. Men and women usually wear brightly colored ribbons," she explained. "Does anyone know where this is celebrated?" She paused to take a sip of water from the glass on the desk. A few of her students shook their hands out. She waited for an answer. ((OOC: Okay, ALL of that information was from The World of Robert Jordan's the Wheel of Time. Some of it wasn't rephrased in my own words very well... Sorry! Don't sue me! Also, I know I covered a whole lot of holidays in that one, but I wanted to speed it up a bit. Almost done.If someone wants to answer the question but doesn't want to look it up, Genshai is celebrated in Tear, Illian, Amadicia, Tarabon, and the sourthern parts of Altara and Murandy.)) |

Radgar sat as the teacher went on and on about this holiday or that holiday. It wasn't that hard of a class but it soon got repetitive and some what boring. She explained holidays like the Feast of Fools, where everything was backwards, Nobles did what their servants did and vice versa. She went on about another ten different holidays before asking any questions. "Genshai takes place the third day of Tammaz. Men and women usually wear brightly colored ribbons," she explained. "Does anyone know where this is celebrated?" Finally a question he knew the answer too. He looked around the room and noticed how everyone was staying quiet nursing sore hands from writing massive amounts of notes. Who really needed to know about all the holidays? He asked himself rubbing his own hand and looking over his notes. As the silence filled the room he could hear the breathing of the person next to him and the scraping of a pen as someone started doodling. Putting up his hand up he gave a sly grin as the accepted turned to him and nodded her head. "Genshai, I believe its celebrated Tear, Illian, Amadicia, and a few other places." He wondered why this was one of the only holidays that struck a cord. Yes he had celebrated other ones many many times but he had never really paid attention to what they were all about. |
