Deceased Yellow Head
Freyja looked at the pile of paperwork lying in the desk in front of her. Her face wrinkled with disgust. She hated that kind of boring monotonic work. She leaned back in her high-backed chair and let out a long sigh. There should be a weave or a ter'angreal to make the paperwork go away... But unfortunately there wasn't. She would just have to get a grip and start going through the reports. Signing this and signing that. I have better things to do than that. Nevertheless she took the first paper in the pile and signed the long report after reading it. She did the same thing over and over again. Read, sign, read, sign... When her mind started to feel numb and she thought she was going to fall asleep she stopped for a moment. She closed her eyes for a while. I wish I could be travelling again. My talents go to waste when I'm only sitting here and labeling reports. I should be Healing, not reading. But she knew that she had responsibilities, and most of them were in the Tower. She couldn't leave them now. But the fact didn't make the paperwork disappear. She looked around in her room. The golden walls refectled the sunlight coming from the wide windows behind her back. Dark brown furniture lined the room. Her eyes fixed to the wide bookself. All of the shelves were covered with numerous books she had brought from her trips outside the Tower. She loved reading and studying and had almost chosen the Brown Ajah, but she loved Healing and helping people more. Helping women. She didn't want any woman to have the same past as she had and did anything to prevent that from happening. She loved the talent she had been given and had chosen the Yellow Ajah. And she never regretted that. She looked at the slightly smaller pile of paperwork yet to be done and rose from her chair. She walked to the bookself and picked a book about herbs. She was interested in the alternative healing methods but believed that she would never really need them. She sat on a stuffed armchair beside the bookself and started to read. There is no harm in taking a short break. I still have time to finish the paperwork. She was soon lost in the book and had forgotten all about the pile of papers on her desk. |

Retired Brown Sister
Eithne didn't quite know what she was doing here. She had so many things to do -- better things to do -- she had duties to attend to and students to teach; she had that puzzling letter that still made bile rise in her throat every time she thought of it... and though the Brown Halls were home, visiting the Yellows' Quarters was like returning to where she had grown up. Every tile and tapestry here was dear to her; had been dear to her seventy years ago, when everyone thought that she would certainly be a Yellow. The wide windows let in shafts of soft-sweet sunlight, leaving rectangles of warmth through which she moved. It contrasted sharply with the dirty looks she attracted from every Yellow sister from her time. I would have chosen Yellow had it not been for my oaths, had it not been... my love. She turned the corner, and for a moment she paused, her eyes empty. My love, my Reklan; Minda, the light of my life. It had been so long ego -- nearly ninety years ago -- and the memory of it still made her burn with the desire to crumble the White Flame of the Aes Sedai in her hands. But today was not a day for remembrance and vengeance; today she would visit an old friend. You are far too sentimental for your own good. Certainly, keep up all your lies to yourself about 'keeping up appearances'... but Eithne, you fool, all you want, sometimes, is a friend. Freyja was much younger than Eithne was, though Eithne rarely if never thought about the age gap between them, and she had risen to be Head of the Yellow Ajah in an admirably short time. Eithne had taught her a long time ago -- has it really been forty years? -- and Freyja was one of the few Yellows' whose friendship she had not lost. Isn't it sad that you must come to another Ajah's Halls to find a friend? She had no friends in the Brown Ajah; you could not be friends with women whom obeyed your orders as naturally as you breathed. And there were no friends in the Black Shen. Tomorrow she might be ordered to kill Freyja Annolyn, and she would do it with no murmur or complaint, and she would do it as gently as she could, but she would kill the Yellow all the same. No friends. She rapped loudly on Freyja's door, and upon receiving no reply and finding the door unlocked, she pushed it open and stepped in -- and smiled. Freyja was curled up on a generously stuffed armchair by the shelf and was so immersed in the book that she had not even noticed Eithne's appearance. Eithne cleared her throat softly. "Good morning, Freyja," she said, closing the door behind her and taking a seat without being asked. She did not take these liberties because they were both Heads, and therefore equal in status; she took them because they were old friends, and it was foolish to ask a friend if you could sit down. She channeled unthinkingly to heat up the pot of tea left on the table, next to the piles of dreary reports she herself knew so well -- and then manipulated flows of Air to pour it into two cups. "Sometimes I wonder if you remember it is the Yellow Ajah you lead, and not the Brown," she said teasingly, proferring a cup to Freyja on dancing weaves of Air. Thickly honeyed, the way she liked it. I might kill her tomorrow, but we are friends for today. She refused to let it cloud her mood. |

Deceased Yellow Head
She was halfway reading the book when she heard a voice say near her: "Good morning, Freyja". She had a second to realise that someone had just walked into her room without her noticing it at all and had the nerve of coming in without her permission and using her name without the honorific 'Sedai' before she saw it was only Eithne. I never thought the Brown side of my mind would take over me like this. Anyone could have entered, maybe slit my throat, before I noticed a thing! Keep your wits together, woman! After cursing herself a bit she noticed that Eithne was already sitting and warming a forgotten pot of tea with flows of Fire. If it had been someone else, she would have sent her to the Mistress of Novices to be switched, Aes Sedai or not, but they had been friends for so long that useless courtesy wasn't recuired anymore. Eithne poured two cups of tea with flows of Air. "Sometimes I wonder if you remember it is the Yellow Ajah you lead, and not the Brown," she said teasingly. Freyja smiled. Eithne knew her too well. Sometimes she seriously thought that she should have chosen Brown, but then again, she loved Healing more than anything. She took the cup Eithne had flown next to her with Air and smiled. Freyja wasn't the only one that had had to choose between two Ajah's she felt as her own, Eithne knew how to Heal and almost chose the Yellow Ajah herself. Freyja knew this although she hadn't even lived when Eithne had been a novice. But the age difference didn't matter to her. "And sometimes I wonder if you should be sitting here instead of me. You know you would now be the Head if you had chosen the Yellow. Not that I'm complaining." She took a sip of tea and smiled when she noticed it was very sweet, thickly honeyed, the way she liked it. "So, what brings you here today? Are you just visiting a friend or is there something else on your mind?" |
