The bells have chimed the High hour, and strangely, Edeleas wasn't off going somewhere he could be alone to practice with his sword or hide in corners where he usually channeled whiskers of saidin, experimenting weaves, keeping himself low unless he attract the attention of Asha'man who might send him straight to the Master of Soldier's office for a punishment.

He was walking toward the library, rolls of parchment, quills and a bottle of ink tucked in his arms. His glasses were perched crookedly on his nose, but as he liked to give them an arranging push, his hands were full. He entered the great doors of Tar Valon's famed library, bowing respectfully to the Aes Sedai, Gaidin and Asha'man he found inside.

He was here to do a research; the prospect of having his own little class to teach was enough to send him quivering with excitement like a little boy who had just been given a present on his fifth birthday. After asking directions from the librarian, a Brown sister, Edeleas made his away among the towering bookshelves toward the section devoted to the different peoples and civilizations of the Age.

He deposited his things on the nearest unoccupied table he could find and started searching the bookshelves, pulling out tomes that were devoted on the Ayyad, Sea Folk and Aiel. This was going to be his class soon: a study on the obscure peoples of the world. He just hoped he would learn enough to impart to his would-be students.

After pulling out eight different books on the subject, Edeleas pulled up a chair and opened the first book on the pile: a book about the kinship terms of the Aiel. The library's silence would have been deafening.

Shaya made her way down to the library, she definitely need to brush up on a few things. Usually if she paid attention enough during the classes it was enough to keep up, but new classes were being started every day and she found it hard to keep up with it all. Looking out the tall glass stained windows as she walked down the hallways, she found herself looking forward to spring. It had been a cold winter and she longed to be able to sit outside again, even if it meant doing garden chores. Her channelling classes were coming along nicely and she felt confident in her grasp of Saidar now, but there were a few things she wanted to know more about. Her experience with the Angreal room was still fresh in her mind, but now that the memory of the punishment had worn off, she was curious to find out more about the wards that had been placed on the room. Bobbing a quick curtsy to the librarian on duty, she moved to the back of the library where she knew books on the Power were kept.

A slight movement in the corner of her eye caught her attention and she turned her head only to see the Dedicated from one of her classes. He was bent over a book, which a large pile of them next to him as well. She walked over with a smile on her lips; it would be a good opportunity to introduce herself to him, since this was hard to do during the class. “Good afternoon Dedicated. I’m sorry to bother you, but I think we share a class, don’t we?” She made a small curtsy in case he was the kind of man that insisted on protocol and proceeded to introduce herself. “My name is Shaya.” She cast a brief look on the books he had picked out; apparently he was researching some different cultures. “Are you preparing for classes?”

The Aiel of the Three-fold Land, as they call what is known to us as the Aiel Waste, are not quite the barbarians that people of the earlier Age view them. They are, in fact, an important step in the society from the Age of Legends, and were one of the most respected peoples when the Dragon Reborn saved the land.

The Aiel society has a definite but quite complex relationship, and have a handful of titles for...

Edeleas was so busy with his nose buried in the book that he did not notice the black-haired and white-clad Novice make her way towards him. He only gave a start and removed his gaze from a book when she started to speak.

“Good afternoon Dedicated. I’m sorry to bother you, but I think we share a class, don’t we? My name is Shaya. Are you preparing for classes?”

It took Edeleas an entire minute to speak. He bolted up from his chair, giving his glasses a push. "Oh! Oh! Oh, I am...I am so sorry...I was quite immersed in the book...here, here, sit down, please." So saying he pulled up a chair for Shaya and bade her sit down. She was still smiling as she did so. Then Edeleas sat back down again, blinking rapidly. I am bloody stupid with women!

"Yes, ah...I remember you from the classes. Shaya, did you say? I am Edeleas." He said gesturing toward himself. "Yes you are quite right, I am preparing for classes. I couldn't find anything else interesting to teach so..." again, he gestured toward the books.

[( ooc - sorry it's short. :P )]

Shaya had to smile when he rushed to pull out a chair for her; it was nice to see that she had been right about him: he was indeed very nice.
The fact that she was a novice did not seem to bother him at all, not even for the fact that being seen talking to her might get him in trouble. She took to her seat and nodded as he introduced himself in turn, transferring her attention to the books when he waved at them. "On the contrary, I think teaching about other cultures is very fascinating but it must be hard to cover such an extensive subject.” She bent a little closer to one of the books, absently pushing back a lock of hair that fell into her face as she did so. “Are you planning on focusing your attention on the Aiel in particular?” Noticing another book, she answered her own question as she said:

”Oh no wait, I see you have a book about the Sea folk as well.” Looking at the pile of books he had gathered all together she gave a mock grimace and said: “It looks like you have your work cut out for you in any case, I’m not particularly looking forward to having to teach classes I have to say.” She reached over and turned one of the books to have a better look at one of the sketches. “I have to say I wouldn’t mind knowing a bit more about the Aiel culture. I’ve only ever seen them from a distance and they seem to like to surround themselves with mystery.” Aiel were the one people Caies had always warned her to stay away from. Their senses were keen and they had zero tolerance for anyone caught stealing. He had told her about some of their preferred methods of punishment and Shaya had instantly decided that being dragged across a scalding hot desert naked was not worth any riches in the world. “Have you ever met any Aiel yourself, Edeleas?” She looked back up from the book at him, as he pushed back his glasses once more. He seemed not to even notice he was doing it, probably too used to wearing them.

“I have to say I wouldn’t mind knowing a bit more about the Aiel culture. I’ve only ever seen them from a distance and they seem to like to surround themselves with mystery. Have you ever met any Aiel yourself, Edeleas?” said Shaya after sayiing quite some interesting things on the topic.

Edeleas gave his glasses a push, thinking for an answer. "Well...yes. That makes the Aiel interesting to study. I saw an entire sept of them as I was making my journey toward Tar Valon, even before I became a Soldier, see? I was...having a hard time then...when one of them came forward and gave me his water bottle without saying any word. Yes...the mystery surrounding them is truly fascinating." He said, shrugging. "Thanks to the accounts and studies made by the Aes Sedai who swore fealty to the Dragon Reborn, quite an interesting light is shown to the Aiel. That makes studying them even more...interesting."

He took a breath and glanced at the other books. "I really am fascinated by these peoples; the more mysterious they are, the more interested I am in them. I am especially curious about the Ayyad. No, wait, I'm starting to sound like a Brown sister here!" he laughed heartily as he unscrewed his ink bottle and dipped his quill in it and started writing down his notes. "What about you, Shaya? Have you come here to the library to study or take notes? Or I might be distracting you from your chores?"

Shaya smiled and brushed some imaginary dust from her sleeve, to give herself some time to decide what to answer to his question. She wasn’t proud of getting caught in the Angreal storeroom, but then she didn’t really have to include that part. “I came down to see if I could find some books on Warding.” She shrugged to indicate she didn’t really know much about the subject. “I recently… came into contact with some of them and I wondered how they made them and what they can be made to do” She smiled apologetically at him, for the whole subject sounded boring when spoken out loud like that. “And don’t worry, I will never mistake you for a Brown sister, you can be sure of that.” She gave him a teasing wink and watched as he scribbled down some notes.

“Have you been in the Tower long? Where did you originally come from?” She assumed he had to have been there for some time to have been raised to Dedicated already, but it was always interesting to find out what people had done before they came to the Tower. “Have you discovered any particular Talents with Saidin? Or is that not something they do in the Black Tower?” Shaya knew very little of what went on in the Black Tower, which is why the Mistress of Novices had resolved to send her down there for her punishment, but for now she would have to wait till Valerian came back, for he was the one that would have to set the extend of the punishment. She tried not to cringe as she thought about what he might have her do, but for now he seemed busy outside the Tower, so there was no point in worrying about it just yet.

"Warding?" Edeleas repeated, slowly getting up and giving his glasses a push. "The library offers nice references, but if you like, I can lend you a book I have. I study a lot of that subject too. I can give it to you by your and my next free time, when we meet again."

Shaya said something about mistaking him for a Brown Sister, but Edeleas did not quite get the hang of that. He smiled anyway as Shaya gave him a wink. Light...what do I say next? I am overly stupid with women... He was just thinking of an interesting question to ask, but Shaya got there first. “Have you been in the Tower long? Where did you originally come from? Have you discovered any particular Talents with Saidin? Or is that not something they do in the Black Tower?”

Ah! Finally an interesting topic! Edeleas stood as he resumed his seat. "I've been here in Tar Valon for five years and three months now, to be exact. I'm Cairhienin, and they all say I'm quite tall for one." He laughed heartily at that. "As for Talents, I'm proud to say that I'm an Earth Singer, and a Delver. I found a mine back in Arafel, when I was still journeying to get here."

Edeleas smiled fondly as he recalled the 'over-enthusiastic' King of Arafel who summoned him from the inn he had been staying there. Now he turned to Shaya again, meeting her gaze. "What about you? Tell me more about yourself...if I'm not keeping you from your chores. The Light knows we both don't want to end up in trouble." He said with a warm smile.

Shaya smiled and shook her head. She did really have to do some dusting, but all that could wait. It was a quiet day in the library and there were not many Aes Sedai about. She would just be a bit quicker later and make up for the time lost. “It wouldn’t be the first time I get in trouble over my chores and I’m sure it wouldn’t be the last time either, but I would much rather take a few minutes to talk to you.” Her cheeks dimpled as her grin deepened “In fact, I think this is a much more valuable asset to my education than dusting shelves.” She found herself checking over her shoulder just in case anyway and was relieved to see no one about.

“I very much appreciate your offer on the book of Warding though and I’d like to take you up on that one if you really don’t mind me borrowing it for a while?” She was very exited at the prospect of being able to read up on the subject. It also reminded her that Cayana had ordered her to report to one of her fellow Greens for chores, which she would have to do later that day. Might as well get it over and done with. She listened with interest to Edeleas’ Talents. They sounded very exotic and Shaya found herself leaning forward in anticipation to learn more about the subject. “I hope you don’t mind me asking, but I’ve not had a lot of experience with Talents yet, would you mind telling me what you can do with them?”

She knew men were usually stronger with Earth and Fire but she had never seen what they could actually do with it. “I wonder if I turn out to have any Talents.” She had discovered that Spirit and Air were definitely her strong elements, but although she was able to hold more of the Power and hold it longer, she had not discovered anything special about the weaves she had made so far. “I guess there are only a few people who have a special Talent like yours. What is it like? How did you find our your Talents?” She leaned her face on her chin as she looked at Edeleas in fascination.

Edeleas paused writing and felt his pockets - yes, the book was there, and he pulled it out and handed it smilingly toward Shaya. "Well, you can't read too much and look at the book too." He said as a joke.

“I hope you don’t mind me asking, but I’ve not had a lot of experience with Talents yet, would you mind telling me what you can do with them?” Shaya asked. She seemed very interested in what he had to say, and Edeleas quite felt shy. He had always been stupid with women, so to speak. So he cleared his throat as he took up his quill again.

"My Talents aren't quite friendly, Shaya." He said gently. "I'm an Earth Singer, and before I came to the Black Tower I destroyed a quarter of the New Foregate of Cairhien. A week ago when I was out doing practice in the Gaidin yard, I very nearly skewered a Youngling to her death with ten-foot high spikes." He dipped his quill into the inkpot. "But that doesn't mean I'm a monster. A lot of accident can happen if you aren't careful with Talents. But Talents are not the fiend at all times. I'm also a Delver; I specialize with locating ores from under the ground. I discovered a mine for the King of Arafel before I came here."

Shaya said something about her own Talents, but Edeleas was only half-listening. His attention was on his notes about the Aiel kinship terms; they were annoyingly complex.

“I guess there are only a few people who have a special Talent like yours. What is it like? How did you find our your Talents?” Shaya asked again when she noticed his attention was slipping from her.

Edeleas stopped writing and looked at her. She was indeed quite pretty. Now wait, why did that strike his mind? He cleared his throat. "Quite few people do turn out to be able to Delve as I do, and you don't get Earth Singers that can level out an entire city block. It makes you feel special, having certain Talents. About how I found out my Talents, it is quite...dark...but would you really want to hear it?" he asked.

He resumed writing again. Actually, he would like it much better if Shaya answered no.

Shaya was actually surprised he offered to tell her about how he discovered his Talents; even after admitting the experience had been less than pleasant. She noticed his attention kept straying back to the books and the notes he was making and it made her realise that he had come down to prepare his lessons, not to sit there and entertain some novice who wouldn’t stop harassing him with questions. She thought she would very much like to know more about him and how he had come to the Tower. The simple admission that he had destroyed half the Foregate made her realise he must have an interesting tale to tell indeed. Now was not the time though, for she got the distinct feeling she had outstayed her welcome.

What she had taken for friendliness from his part, might well be mere politeness on his part. Smoothing her skirts she was torn between her own curiosity and the fact that she enjoyed his company and the common rules of courtesy. It was not like this was the last opportunity she would ever have to speak to him. Trying to buy more time to think, she absently toyed with some of the dark hair that cascaded over her shoulders. Reaching a conclusion, she nodded to herself and gave him a smile while saying earnestly: “I think I would very much like to hear your story, even though it sounds like you have been through a lot. For now I think I have taken up enough of your time, you must be wanting to finish your notes in time for your class.” She briefly put her hand over his and rose from her seat.

“Thank you very much for indulging me, I very much enjoyed the conversation, the company and the break from my chores, but now I think it is time for me to return to my duties.” She gave him a deep curtsy while a hint of a jesting smile played on her lips and returned to her dusting rags at the other side of the library.

Edeleas gave a start as he felt Shaya's hand stray briefly on his own, and he sat up, watched her curtsey. “Thank you very much for indulging me, I very much enjoyed the conversation, the company and the break from my chores, but now I think it is time for me to return to my duties.”

And then she left, and even so, her smile was etched on his memory forever. He returned to his notes dazedly. He was a fool around women, and now he thought he made a fool of himself yet again. He had been rude, he thought. But then...

He turned to see Shaya's retreating back; to watch her black tresses bounce. Edeleas was sure they were going to meet again someday.
