For a while Mika kept sitting in the mess hall, looking in her, now nearly empty –for the contents were spilled over her ham and eggs- mug of milk. In some way she felt her mind racing; but in the same time the thoughts in it went by so slowly that while Mika had the feeling she only sat there for a few minutes after the Dedicated had left, but in reality the chorenovices had already started cleaning up the tables in the otherwise empty mess hall. There were three Younglings sitting together somewhere and a dedicated was talking to an accepted on another table, but those were the only other people who were not cleaning up the dishes; besides Mika off course. “If I were you; I’d go and start with your classes or chores before an Aes Sedai catches you sitting here doing nothing.” Suddenly a sharp voice came from behind the young novice, pulling her out of her thoughts and making her notice how few people there were left in the mess hall. As Mika turned around she looked in the sour face of Nyra, one of those novices who just loved bringing bad novices to the attention of Aes Sedai and accepted. But obviously that had not helped; for Nyra had been in the tower even longer then Mika and she still was a novice. In her current state Mika could think of nothing else to say or do then a plain “oh” before getting up and strolling out of the mess hall, the movement of her body suddenly remembering her that she had been hungry earlier. But as she had managed for quite some time now, she ignored it and let her legs carry her outside into the cold. There was this soft, dusty rain... the type that was just there but that didn’t really bother you and didn’t really got you wet fast. Mika just walked around, having her feet carry her around, guiding her and taking her to places where, in this last five years she had made a couple of really fond memories with her brother. Every once in a while she would just stop an sit down, completely unaware of how the rain on the grass would leave ugly green smears on her white dress, and she would cry, her tears mingling with the soft dusty drops of rain that laid a thin mayer of moist on her face. Once more to Mika it seemed like time raced as she sat down, thinking of how this particular spot happened to be their little secret hideout where Mika would –without success- try to reach Saidar on her own, while Elia was practicing small weaves with Saidin. Somewhere in the distance Mika could now hear chimes sounding; and while she actually could care less she could also hear Cayana Sedai’s words in her head... “an hour after High chimes there will be a small remembrance for your brother. you will be given the day off to mourn” and now her head jerked up. it’s the high chimes! As if bitten by a fire ant, Mika jumped up and started hurrying back to the tower, which actually took her quite a while since she had wandered quite a bit off in the tower grounds. Nevertheless, when she finally arrived at her room; the room she now shared with Shaya a somewhat older and very mysterious novice; she finally noticed how she looked like a wreck and swiftly got out of her ugly novice dress and started washing herself in the icy water in the washing basin, muttering soft curses as she tried to ignore the biting cold. As she was finished scrubbing herself clean, she put the basin down and bent over it, to wash out her hair, which apparently had –because of it’s length and her lack of alertness- been caught in a peddle of mud or the like. When she was completely clean she took one of the rough towels and started drying herself off, trying not to have her teeth chatter too loud because of the cold. With her sturdy towel still wrapped around her long, cold hair, Mika wandered towards the closed to put on some new clothes, relieved that there still were some left. A bit before an hour after High chimes, Mika made her way to the place that Cayana Sedai had told her to go. It was a small empty patch of grass with some stones placed in a peculiar way where now a small table stood and a few people, but Mika hardly cared, she only saw Cayana Sedai, went to her and curtsied. Following the careful lead of the Mistress of Novices, Mika got trough the small service, completely in thought about what had happened, and what would happen now. She was unsure, she couldn’t tell what was about to happen and was afraid of it. Surely they would keep her in the tower and go on with that horrific training of hers light eleven years before she could start only she quickly remembered something that her mentor had told her. When Cayana Sedai besides her prodded her for a moment, Mika walked up to the table to say her last farewells to her brothers spirit as his personal items were spread out before her. One glance at them however made her eyes go wide and in a reflex Mika’s hands shot out to one single item that lay on the table; a very old ragged doll, one arm apparently sewn on after having been torn off. “miss Mara” the girl whispered softly and flashes of the days after the carnage in TarenFerry came to mind. She had lain on a bed of grass, shivering and sweating at the same time, a most peculiar illness had come over her and she felt utterly rotten. At that time she had been crying for her mom and dad a lot, but only Elia had been there for her. Elia and the smell of burned wood and flesh. But then there had been miss Mara... her old doll. The doll that she in fact had ‘thrown away’ because she wanted to be a woman next Beltine, but whom she still tended to snuggle before going to bed at night. Somehow Elia had managed to find the cloth doll unharmed in their house and had given it to her while she was ill as a companion. Miss Mara had disappeared after she’d gotten better; and she had completely forgotten about her. And now she was back... a silent witness of Mika’s past. Of Mika herself. And as she took up the old doll something hit her. Even if her parents were gone, and Elia was ‘lost’ she was somewhere else now, and she had friends who loved her here... she would never be truly alone... she would never be truly lost. And she had to live her life and do what was needed instead of putting on a mask in order to act tough and let no-one know how she felt. She smiled gently as she held the doll close to herself and felt a strange warmth coming over her, as if she’d been dipped in a nice warm stream tat would protect her against anything that would happen. She felt as if she was filled with Life itself. |

The day before Cayana had told Mika about her lost brother. Lost being the word. No one knew what happened to the people lost in the arches. Cayana for one did not plan on investigating that thing either. If it was one set of parallel worlds she'd keep away from it was the one's the arches sent you to. Anyone who had gone in there was haunted by what they had seen for the rest of their life's. Your worst fears, sometimes so bad that you couldn't go through them all, sometimes you didn't come out as you surrendered to them. It was all a test of course. It was about finding out if a person was so motivated by becoming Aes Sedai that they would go through them to do that. Some wasn't, tried anyway and was lost. Eila was one of those. Today Cayana had been busy fixing things up for the remembrance ceremony. A proper funeral couldn't be held so Eilas things would be put on a table during the ceremony and returned to his sister Mika at the end of it. Cayana felt so sorry for the girl. To loose someone so dear to you was awful. Right now Cayana was getting the servants to set out torches and making sure that no one was to disturb the ceremony. A few people was attending besides her and Mika, and they would arrive soon. The high chimes sounded and Cayana looked up towards the Towers. Mika had been given the day off to mourn for her brother. She had been told to come here an hour from now though. It's so easy to get lost in your mourning, I hope she'll get through it alright. To loose Mika as well wouldn't be all to nice. It was enough with the one's she lost in the arches as it was, for Mika to decide that it wasn't worth it wouldn't make things better. A few people started to arrive during the hour. Cayana spoke to them a bit while they waited for Mika to arrive. She did eventually and the cerimony begun. An Asha'man was leading it, prayers where spoken and words of rememberence, Mika stood quiet not really present probably. Eventually the cerimony was about to end and Cayana put a hand on the girls shoulder to show that she was supposed to go to the table and pick the things up. The Asha'man and Aes Sedai watched as she walked over to the table and her reactions. Suddenly the glow apeared around the girl. The Aes Sedai didn't move or do anything, thinking it was Cayanas job, but the Asha'man seemed to embrace saidin as they looked over to Cayana for aproval. Singning to them to leave it alone Cayana stepped forward to Mika and put a hand on her shoulder. "I know it hurts Mika, but this is not the way. Please, let go of saidar." She spoke softly to the girl in a kind voice. She wasn't about to tear the connection away from the girl, not when she had finally broken her own block. It was sad that it had to have been done in such a fashion. "Please, Mika." |
