Reigning his horse for a moment before one of the many bridges of Tar Valon, Rakim Pengar got off his sadle and guided the horse toward the Tower Guards standing ready. The man looked at him curiously and made to speak, but Rakim did not give him the chance to ask any unnecessary questions. He pushed back the hood of his cloak, allowing the guard to see who he was. The man's eyes widened and did not say anything more except to salute. Surely no one would question an Asha'man returning to the tower after doing some business for the M'Hael or his Shen. And, if the guard would be too curious, Rakim could easily dispatch of him - he had always prided himself of being able to kill silently, quickly and mess-free.

Slowly, he made his way toward the Black Tower, now and then running a gloved hand through his short black hair. He had grown far too used to his shoulder-length tangle, and the fact that it had been reduced to something that barely reached his ears made him fret for a moment. All those sleeky black strands, cut short just because of...Rakim pushed the thought aside, looking around as he made his way through the Black Tower's compounds. After giving over his horse to a stableboy and giving him five silvers, Rakim proceeded to walk on, trying to look innocent, glancing every which way in case he'd see the boy. A few Soldiers and Dedicated saluted to him, but many had quizzical looks on their faces that in another time, he would be all too happy to replace it with terror frozen with death. But not now, not today. One of the Black sisters often commented about his bloodlust, and she made him laugh. He wasn't that evil; not if he could help it, though.

Walking toward a vacated bench and sitting down, Rakim surveyed the activity around him once more. Five years and a half wasn't really a long time, but the boy couldn't be Asha'man yet to start slowing down. He should be Dedicated by now, or still in the level of Soldier. The latter would be unbelievable, given the potential he sensed from the boy, but he knew how to wait. Waiting patiently and silently were important virtues in serving the Great Lord of the Dark. He mulled the countless memories of him doing the same thing all of those years ago. It had always been his way to help first, and then ask for a little payment later. Decent people were too easy to manipulate, and the countless boys and men, all of great potential just like the one he was seeking now, were sworn to the Great Lord before they could even blink. Some of the Dreadlords commented about his...methods...but he was by far one of the most effective recruiter the Black had.

A scuttling Soldier passed by, and Rakim lunged forward and siezed the chubby boy by the arm. The boy gave a frightened squeak about being snatched, but Rakim was ready with his assuring smile. "I would like you to tell me, do you know anyone by the name...Edeleas? He should be in the same level as you are, if he isn't raised to Dedicated yet."

The boy looked confused for a moment, but he nodded slowly. "Dedicated Edeleas is busy in his classes at this moment, Asha'man."

"Ah." said Rakim. So. His calculations were correct. A mere five and a half years have passed, and the boy was now in second tier. He had a shrewd idea that given another five years or so, the boy would now be sporting the Dragon Pin in his other collar. By then he would be powerful; too powerful to be wasted in this Black Tower's stupid goals and achievements. He would do very nicely as a Dreadlord, Rakim was sure of that. The Great Lord was still searching for those who were worthy of commanding the army he was building up. "Dedicated, you say? I see. We've met before, Edeleas and I. I knew he had potential. What class is he in?"

"I do not know, Asha'man." the boy replied. He looked a tad restless. "Dedicated don't tell their business to Soldiers like me. If you pardon me, Asha'man, I still have some chores to do..."

The boy left, and Rakim stood up, brushing his black cloak. Little warts like the boy were unreliable. He had to ask an Asha'man like himself, or if he was lucky enough not to be suspected, one of the Reis. He doubted whether the Soldier knew what Shen Edeleas chose, but he could always find out. He was also good at fishing out things. Gathering his cloak regally behind him, Rakim proceeded to enter the Black Tower.

The hallways were quite empty, with only a few Soldiers and errand boys moving around. Rakim paced on, ignoring the salutes and the bows directed toward him. He doubted any one of these children even knew who he was; only the Reis, older Asha'man, the Mahdi and the M'Hael would recognize him. He had been of the Shen al'Aman Val, and served the Black Tower for twenty years before embracing the Great Lord of the Dark. Rakim doubted he was going to be in good graces with Zekieal once the man would see him; after all, he left the Black Tower without even leaving a single note. And he had been a candidate for being his Shen's Rei, though, but Rakim did not want the position; in his opinion it attracted far too much attention. He always liked to move in the backstage, manipulating and twitching the strings. His specialty.

He rounded the corner, and the first sign of trouble greeted him the form of a miffed-looking Rei heading his way.

(ooc: I apologize if it is not as good as it could be, but it was late and I was tired... :look )

Sidivin sat quietly in his office, surveying the latest roster for his class. Several of the names had been removed at Sidivin’s request, and others had simply not shown up for the lessons. He didn’t mind really, it was a completely voluntary course and it was the student’s prerogative to forgo the honor of attending. The class usually dwindled to only four or five students by the end, and half of the original thirty had already left by the second lesson.

He began to mark off the errors on the parchment for his assistant, Keith, to correct later. That man was odd, to be sure, but he was also one bloody good assistant. Suddenly, a small bell sounded in the room, drawing Sidivin’s attention from his work. That bell was linked to one of the many wards hidden throughout the halls of the Doon m’Taal, this one in particular was situated at the hall’s only public entrance and was triggered only when somebody crossed it without a Doon m’Taal escort to disable the ward.

He rose from his chair and headed for the door. Probably some bloody soldier on an errand got lost and wandered here. I’d better go tell him off and send him on his way, this area is not a bloody playground. The halls of the Doon m’Taal were vast, as were all of the halls in the tower, but he knew them like the back of his hand, and he made is way to the entrance in no time at all. It was there he was greeted by the strangely familiar face of an Asha’man.

“What is your business here? Don’t you know this area is off limits?” he barked, bringing the strolling Asha’man to an abrupt halt.

"What is your business here? Don't you know this area is off limits?" the Rei demanded.

Rakim did not let the man faze him, though he did stop walking. He gave a respectful salute of fist to heart, his black eyes taking on the man's face before him. He was one who did not take insults lightly, but he did not want to go create mess now, as he only wanted to find out about Edeleas, the boy he was bent into shaping into a powerful Dreadlord. A definite asset for the Great Lord, Rakim thought. "I am merely wanting to see what has happened to the Black Tower, Rei." he replied smoothly. "It seems the Black Tower is in the way I left it; as I can see very few changes in the air."

Now Rakim remembered the name of this man: he was one called Sidivin Yahbree, one with quite a colorful reputation even when he hadn't left Tar Valon yet. He wondered vaguely if Sidivin had seen the boy he was seeking; but then of course, the Reis of the different Shen should be doing their best to recruit the boy - his boy, if Rakim could claim so. He is mine, today, because he hasn't been claimed by the Great Lord yet. He is mine, until the day the Great Lord touches his soul. Somehow Rakim hoped that day would still be far-off, but then, with Edeleas' potential, he could still be sorely disappointed.

Sidivin was frowning more deeply, and Rakim knew he would have to twist his words further. "I was wondering, Rei...if you could tell me about a Dedicated name Edeleas? I have just returned to Tar Valon, and you see, even from the bridges I hear mention of him. Is he one of the geniuses of the Towers today?"

There. A simple question could do no harm, could it?

(( No, he's a future Black. :) Something is gonna happen to him that shapes him into one, as far as I know. Not really sure, but he's not a Black right now. ))
