Mika's training (Classroom)

Freyja opened the door to a large empty room. It was a bit dusty, it hadn't been used in a while. Freyja loved the room because it had a warm atmosphere. Light brown walls and large windows made the room seem bigger than it was and the natural light brightened the room. There was no furniture other than a few cushions on the floor and a big wooden desk. Freyja ignored the desk and settled herself on the brightly coloured cushions.

She hadn't been teaching in a while. She didn't hate the job, but she didn't love it either. She thought that novices should have the best training they could get and was glad to part of it, but she still felt like she could be something more valuable with her time, especially when the novices didn't seem to learn a thing. Some of them were so wool-headed. She hoped that this girl, Mika, showed some motivation. Nothing was worse than teaching a novice who didn't want to learn.

On the other hand, it wasn't as bad as teaching a novice who thought she could channel perfectly when she hadn't even touched the Source. Nobles were usually like that. At least the ones who had just came to the Tower.

She brushed away the dust with thin weaves of Air and used Fire to light the logs already laying in the fireplace. The fire lighted the room even more and it's flickering light danced on Freyja's pale orange dress. Freyja had gotten there too early. She had wanted to be sure that the room was ready before the training began, but now she had nothing to do. She took her long brown hair and started to braid it while she waited for Mika to arrive.

Carefully Mika ot ready for her first real mentor class in quite a while. Dalaine Sedai had been gone for some cause for a while now, and somehow things had managed to get slightly messy before everything fell back into place, but now she would have 1mentor again; temporarily or not, she did not know.

Mika had been told that the sister who would be looking over her now was one of the Yellow Ajah, Freyja Sedai; Mika knew the name but had not had too many experience with her -luckily, for most experiences with Aes Sedai were not very good for the novice-
When she'd finished getting ready she hurried up the stairs towards the Training Halls to find the right room, she was a tad early for classes, but had never met an Aes Sedai who had been severely angry about that.

Finally she thought as she held on to the little booklet in her hands. She did not know whether she'd need to write down something, but it was always better to be prepared, certainly with Aes Sedai around. To wield the one power... It took me long enough to get to this point this she added wryly in her mind as she wandered over the almost five years that she had spent here, wrestling with her block, being stuffed with whatever knowledge they could about channeling, but not able t actually enjoy the feeling of Saidar.

Mika softly knocked on the door that she believed was the right one, and after a serene "enter" she walked in and curtseyd to the Aes sedai who sat -seemingly really comfortable- in a pile of pillows "Freyja Sedai? I'm Mika Soljourn and am here for my class" she said respectively as was expected of a novice in this situation.

Freyja finished her braid and heard a soft knock on the door. "Enter", she said and a girl in novice white stepped in. The girl had waist long hazel hair, a little bit like her own brown hair. The novice gave a curtsey and said: "Freyja Sedai? I'm Mika Soljourn and am here for my class" Freyja gave her a measuring look. She knew the girl was Andoran, her speech was like her own and the way she curtseid was exactly the same as she had done in her own novicehood.

She enjoyd meeting people from her home country. Freyja had had some very tragic experiences back home, but she still visited the country now and then when she had time from her paperwork and other duties which came with being the Head. She still loved Caemlyn, even when it brought so many bad memories. After so many years she could still feel the kick in her stomach and the horror as blood started to run between her legs... She had gotten over it, but she never forgot. Having a child had been her greatest wish and Gare had taken it away just like that. She still cursed the man.

"Yes, I am Freyja Sedai. Please come and sit down." She waited for the girl to come and sit next to her and then turned to face her. "I am going to be your mentor at least temporarily. Before we start your training, I want you to tell me everything you have done with the Power so far. I believe you had a block which has recently been broken, yes? I need you to tell me everything you know about the Power before I can decide what you will learn here today." Freyja felt a bit wierd about teaching a novice she didn't know anything about. She really needed to know her abilities before she decided anything.

"Yes, I am Freyja Sedai. Please come and sit down." Mika obeyed the Aes Sedai without hesitation and sat down to face the sister who spoke as soon as she sat decently. "I am going to be your mentor at least temporarily. Before we start your training, I want you to tell me everything you have done with the Power so far. I believe you had a block which has recently been broken, yes? I need you to tell me everything you know about the Power before I can decide what you will learn here today."

Mika nodded duefully; she had expected this question, and even though she still wasn't certain what to say in reply, she at least had gotten the time to look for at least part of the answer ahead.

"During the small five years I've been been here, I mainly have been taught about the theoretics of Saidar and the One Power. both in aclassrooms as in private classes with Dalaine Sedai.
Before my block was broken I had very little experience with the One Power; without knowing it back then I have used it a few times before coming to the Tower and herre during blockbreaking sessions from time to time m block was triggered and I'd channel. I could not sense what I was channeling though." She paused a moment to gather her thoughts and cough softly.

"According to those few times I channeled here, Dalaine sedai told me she believed I have a talent in Travelling and making Illusions since apparently every time I actually got terrified and started channeling, I'd do something within those two lines. " she sighed as she tried not to ramble to the yellow sister in front of her who merely looked at her with a mild interest shown on her serene face.

"Now, after having broken my block, I've had a few sessions of trying to embrace Saidar, and now I succeed almost all of the times that I try to touch female half of the One Power." she put a finger on her lips while she thought "Up till now no-one has actually supervised me to try and actually use saidin in weaves." she said as she finished her ramble.

Freyja listened intently as Mika told her about her history with the Power. She was a bit surprised that it had taken five years before the block was broken, but she had heard of worse. One of the novices she had heard of had lived as a novice for almost twenty years before she could be raised Accepted because of her block. The girl seemed to know a lot about saidar, but if she hadn't channeled under supervision they would have to start from scratch.

Freyja felt a little stab of disappointment when she heard the girl's talents. She had had the hope that the girl would show a talent in Healing. She always hoped that over every novice. She wanted to grow the numbers of Yellow sisters, but she couldn't force anyone if they didn't have the talent. She didn't let the emotion reach her face though.

After Mika had finished Freyja smiled at her and tried to make her voice warm: "Then we will have to start with the basics. You're story is quite usual. It is good that you know your talents already, that will help you focus on them. If you're not sure or want to ask about something, please do. You won't learn if you don't ask." She hoped that the girl would really ask if something bothered her, otherwise she would wonder about that and not concentrate on the training.

"Lets start the training then. I'm sure you're eager to learn. First of all, embrace saidar, and hold it inside you." She embraced saidar herself and wove a single strand of Air. It floated right above her hand. "Can you say what element this is?"

If you're not sure or want to ask about something, please do. You won't learn if you don't ask." Mika nodded briefly, sure that if her mentor would stay this warm and friendly, that she would not have any problems with asking questions; she was very burned on learning to wield Saidin now, very eager to be called before the arches; to learn what it was that had made her brother be 'lost'

"Lets start the training then. I'm sure you're eager to learn. First of all, embrace saidar, and hold it inside you. Can you say what element this is?" The Aes Sedai then continued as she wove something above her hand. Mika just concentrated and put the picture of the field of daisys back in her mind, a field of yellow daisys, gently waving in the wind, their heads turned to the sun. As she had that picture fixed in her mind, her eyes closed at this moment, she started to make it more real, let the song of the chirping birds reach her ethereal ears, the soft caress of the wind, the warm, gentle scent of the flowers... and she was just there, somewhere etheral looking over the scene, feeling it become more real. And then she let herself be drawn in, into the living painting in her mind, drawn to one single flower, becoming one with the flower, softly moving in the wind, but touched by the warm rays of the sun. the warm, bright sun. And everything started to be warm and fuzzy so she reached up, greeting the sun, letting the sun thawn her; wake her up from her sleep, and open her petals, one by one by one, until finally the sun shone down on her, just on her, and she felt alive.

At that point, Mika opened her eyes and took a small moment to gather herself, for once more everything looked so different again, so detailed, so bright... so alive. She looked at the weave above the sisters hand, not not with her eyes, but with the sense of the One Power within her and she recognised the thread used. "I am quite sure this is done with Air Freyja Sedai" she said calmly and added with a bit of doubt "If not, I'd say that it is Water"

Freyja looked at Mika when she closed her eyes and concentrated in something. Probably the flower image. Freyja didn't have to imagine being a flower anymore of course, touching the Source came naturally, without thinking. She nodded approvingly when the aura of light surrounded the girl. She hadn't been sure how much the girl had been taught and was relieved that she did know how to embrace saidar, and even did it in her first try.

The girl looked at the single weave on top of Freyja's hand and after a while said: "I am quite sure this is done with Air Freyja Sedai. If not, I'd say that it is Water" Freyja smiled. "It is indeed done with Air. Good. Air and Water don't differ much, but you can see the difference when you have learned a bit more." Still embracing saidar she wove a single strand of Water on top of her other hand. The strand of Water was slightly blue, when the other strand was maybe yellow, if you looked with your eyes. "This is Water. You can see the difference now, can't you. As you probably already know, Air and Water are usually strong in women, when Fire and Earth are found stronger in men. But this might differ in your case of course. Now, try to weave a strand of Air, just like the one I wove, and if you manage that, try to make a weave of Water too. Don't be disappointed if you don't manage it in the first try, we have plenty of time." She let her own strands float above her hands. She waited for the girl to give it a try.

Mika nodded. Why does she have tostart with those? she pouted inwardly. She had not yet try to use either flows of air and water -nor spirit o earth for that matter- but had already managed to create a tiny flame with fire... She had been training on that eversince she had been able to touch the source, and Shaya, her roomie, had been so kind as to help her along with trying to use fire into a flame.

Well, I suppose it's for the best... if I'd manage to immediately create something, she'd probably know I've been practicing on my own, and the last thing I need now is to get send to Cayana Sedai yet again.
So, without hesitation Mika reached out to take hold of the thread of air within the one power. but in vain... the element just slipped trough her imaginary fingers... like she was grabbing... well... like she was grabbing air. So she tried again... with the same result. and again...
for quite a while Mika just sat there, getting herself nervous and annoyed for not being able to grasp the bloody element and even lost saidar once because of it, when the yellow sister suddenly spoke up. "Don't be so uptight... you're not trying to hold on to a bird in your hands... you're working with air... you don't claw at air... you breath it gently, without even knowing it... it's somewhat like Saidar itself... just open yourself to it and let it take you instead of you trying to take it."

For a moment Mika opened her eyes to look at the sister again, but then she closed them and tried taking the picture in again... the field of daisys. It came a bit faster this time and soon she once more was the daisy, taking in the light of the sun "you breath it gently, without knowing it" she heard the voice of her mentor in her head again and tried oto be at ease completely, not focussing hugely on the fact that she needed to get hold of air, but she just 'was there'
Closed of from the outside world, Mika was the daisy in the field, taking in the warmth of the sun, feeling the vastnes of the earth in which her roots were growing, the fire of growth rushing trough the green leaves and stem, the sweet morning dew on her leaves and petals... and the soft, gentle caress of the wind that made her petals rush softly.

She realised now that she had the powers ready and just singled out one for a moment, and it came to her as easilly as she moved her fingers. Without too much touble she bent it the way she believed she'd seen the yellow sister bend it, and ended up having just about the same weave hovering above her hand. Even though she still had he eyes closed, she somehow knew... or perhaps felt that the aes sedai softly nodded; maybe it was the gentle movement to the rooms air which she could pick up, or the sule change in light that shone trough her closed eyelids, or perhaps she just picked up the feeling of satisfaction with her tutor, but as she let go of the weave of Air and tried to do the same with Water -and succeeded- she opened her eyes again, only to see the Aes Sedai sitting there, serene and composed as if nothing had happened at all.

The girl just sat there, trying hard it seemed, but she didn't manage to weave Air. Once Freyja saw the light of saidar vanish around her, and she had to help her a bit. The girl was trying too hard and had forgotten to surrender herself. Her words seemed to help, Mika relaxed a bit. The glow of saidar was around her again soon, and this time she was able to make a strand of Air similar to the one that was above Freyja's hand. Freyja smiled a bit and nodded approvingly. The strand of Air vanished and was soon replaced by one made with Water. The girl opened her eyes again. "Good," she said and let her Aes Sedai serenity melt into a smile. "You see, it is easy when you just surrender yourself to saidar and gently push the weaves, not bend them. Try to remember that next time too." She let the strands above her hands vanish.

"I don't know if you already know this, but Air and Water are considered female elements. They usually appear stronger in women than in men. Fire and Earth appear stronger in men more often than women. This differs, but your strands of Air and Water seemed to be strong, so I wouldn't be surprised if you weren't that strong in other elements. I myself am strongest in Air and Spirit. You might have seen that my strand of Water was slightly fainter than the one made with Air. Spirit" - she wove a pale strand of Spirit similar to the others she had made float above her hand - "is a neutral element, found strong in men and women alike." She moved the strand to float in the air in front of her and made a red strand of Fire above her hand and a green one to float above the other. The strands were visibly fainter than the other ones she had made. She wasn't nearly as strong in them as she was in Air or Spirit. "These are Fire and Earth. Now find these elements and weave a strand of them and see if you can feel the difference in their strength." She let the strands floating again, giving the girl something to focus on.

Mika watched proudly as the Aes Sedai let slip in a brief warm smile and then almost clung to the sisters words as she made three other weaves... holding them all at the same time.

mine vanishedshe thought for a moment; but then again, she hadn't been that attentive on it so next time she would be.
"These are Fire and Earth. Now find these elements and weave a strand of them and see if you can feel the difference in their strength."

Once more Mika nodded and let herself flow back into the image that she had been before. She searched a while inwardly about which one could be Spirit, but she felt that it was there, surrounding everything in it's own way, giving life to everything. So, while keeping a gentle hold on the weave of water she was holding, she softly let spirit be guided into a weave... but she failed to hold on to air, which seemed now to seep trough her hands like summerrain.
"I don't really sense a difference... maybe just a tad less strong then the other two... but that could be my imagination." Mika said in a highly concentrated voice before she briefly opened up her eyes to look at the weave she'd just made "I don't see one either" she said softly and looked at the Aes Sedai uncertain.
"well to me it seems just a tad weaker." the sister said in reply. Mika only nodded and closed her eyes, leting fire flow into her.

She now used the way she had done with the other elements, and strangely enough it went a lot faster then when she'd done it on herself earlyer and the weave was a bit faster there then she'd expected, and a bit stronger too, but she shook her head. "This one is weaker... it doesn't seem to be very much, but compared to air and water it is weaker." Suddenly she realised she'd forgotten to try to keep the weave of spirit in place again, and now she only held the weave of fire; briefly she cursed inwardly.

Knowing that for a moment this would be her last chance, Mika held on to the weave as hard as she could without pressing it away as she tried to let Earth flow into her... but as soon as the other element came somewhat close , she felt fire leave her she grasped and grapled to hold on to the blazing element... but it was too late... and not only had she let Fire slip, she'd somehow managed to lose Earth now too. "cowsdr.." she already started mumbling as she remembered with whom she was sitting and covered it up with a cough.

Getting Earth back wasn't that hard though and soon she'd woven a small weave of Earth, hovering above her hand. "this one is about as strong as Fire" she said as she opened her eyes and once more looked at the five weaves hovering in front of the Aes Sedai.
"If I may ask though..." she said a bit unsure, but the Aes Sedai just listened carefully to her "Howcome I can't manage to keep even two weaves at the same time? and you have five Freyja Sedai..."

Freyja watched again as the girl weaved a strand of Spirit. She apparently tried to mantain the strand of Water, but as usual with novices, the other strand vanished before the other could form. She noticed that the strand was only a little fainter than the others she had made, and she said that aloud when the girl looked at her uncertainly. The strand of Fire she made a bit quicker than the others before it was visibly weaker. But the weave wasn't still weak, it was stronger than the one floating above Freyja's hand. It was as stronger than Freyja's strand of Water. She shouldn't be so strong in all of the elements. Maybe her Earth is considerably weaker. No, it wasn't, the strand of Earth was as strong as the one made from Fire, even when she had a little trouble forming it. That's peculiar. She must be very strong when she has reached her potential. She noticed Mika's cough, and was sure that it wasn't a normal cough, but she let it hang.

"If I may ask though..." Mika said after she had formed the strand of Earth. Freyja listened. It wasn't a bad question, Freyja was delighted she asked. She let all of her strands vanish before she answered. "That is just because you haven't reached your potential in the One Power. My strength in the Power is only average, but I still can handle multiple weaves at the same time. But you haven't even been trained yet, so it will take time before you're strong enough to hold even two weaves at a time. Don't worry about it, it is totally normal. Considering the strength you have in each element, I can see that you have more potential than most of the Aes Sedai in the Tower. You're strength in the One Power will grow over time."

"I hope that answered your question, child. Now we know that you are strongest in Air and Water and weakest in Fire and Earth. You should remember that, it will help you in your training. Now, lets try some simple weaves." She wove a thin strand of Air and used it to shift the long curtains framing the large windows. "You can do many things with just Air." She wove a stronger strand and lifted one of the pillows to the air. "But most weaves recuire more than just one element." She mixed Spirit with Air and stiffened the air, making a solid wall between them. She pressed her hand against it. It wouldn't budge. "I think this one is one of the most useful weave you can do with Air." She left the weave vanish. "I will show this to you again, this time much more slowly. Then try to copy the weave. It doesn't matter if it's not that strong. But try." She weaved again, first Air to the area she wanted to stiffen, then she mixed Spirit with it, making the elements tangle together and form a wall. "Try."

As the woman exlained Mika about the fact that it merely had to di with trainng and that eventually she'd learn it, Mika made a resolution to learn it as fast as she could, even if it meant risking to get caught for channeling unsupervised. Mika had already built up a reputation of being a swift student -however she tried to let the other novices think differently- and so she believed the Aes Sedai wouldn't be surprised if she showed to be a 'fast learner' here as well.

"I hope that answered your question, child. Now we know that you are strongest in Air and Water and weakest in Fire and Earth. You should remember that, it will help you in your training. Now, lets try some simple weaves." The long curtains framing the large windows. shifted as Mika could see weaves of air -at least she believed- touching them gently. "You can do many things with just Air." Now one of the pillows hovered in the air. "But most weaves recuire more than just one element." Mika -who was already watching closely- could see that the Aes Sedai now put in another element and made a weave inbetween her and the novice. Then pressed her hand against it. It wouldn't budge; a solid wall. "I think this one is one of the most useful weave you can do with Air." She left the weave vanish. "I will show this to you again, this time much more slowly. Then try to copy the weave. It doesn't matter if it's not that strong. But try."

Once more Mika nodded as she concentrated heavilly on the weaves. Still in her image of being the daisy, she let the wind and the warm feeling of the sun around her combine into one and felt how the two elements came to her, the feeling she got from air felt indeed somewhat stronger, though not that much. This shouldn't be that difficult Mika thought briefly as she concentrated on making the weave the other sister had shown, but it was difficult, no matter how easy it had seemed, and as Mika was focussing on adding the right amount of Spirit at the right place, her mind slipped away from the thread of air nd it resulted in a big fush of air sending a few pillows flying. Mika just looked with big eyes at the scene before her and felt her cheeks flush "I'm sorry" she muttered embaressed and then started searching for Saidar again since the surprise of the failed weave had caused her to lose her grip on the One Power.

It took Mika quite some attempts and a few gusts of wind, but finally she succeeded, pearls of sweat on her forehead from the effort, but a small smile on her face as he put her hand against a solid wall.

Mika nodded and tried to weave the wall at once. Freyja watched as she concentrated and wove Air and then Spirit, but she had lost control of the weaves of Air and the thing collapsed and the breeze it caused made some of the cushions fly. The glow of saidar vanished around the girl. She blushed and said: "I'm sorry." Freyja gave her a reassuring smile. Most novices couldn't do the weave on their first try. She wondered if she had started with something too hard. No, she will manage it, it just takes some practice.

The girl tried and failed several times but every time she tried again. Freyja was a bit impressed by her persistance. She will become fine Aes Sedai. Persistance was one feature she thought made a good Aes Sedai, a good person. At least when it was directed properly. Beads of sweat were starting to form on the girl's forehead, and after one failed attempt she was finally able to form a good stout wall between them. A small smile lighted her face and she pressed a hand agains it. Freyja smiled too and pressed her hand to the wall of Air on the other side. "Good", she said. "It is normal for a novice to take several attempts before she can form a weave she is trying to form for the first time. But once you have done a weave right, it is much easier to do it again."

"Lets do something with Fire next." Freyja wove Fire enough to make a small flame and then surroundered it with Air, feeding it and growing it, until there was a ball of light in front of her hand. You could see the flame surrounded by something that seemed like smoky glass, but was in fact only weaves of Air. The ball gave a quite bright orange light. "You can use Fire mostly to light or dry things. As you can see, I'm currently using Air to feed the flame. You can also use Earth to be able to make a flame feed from something that doesn't easily burn." She unwove the ball of light and wove Fire to make a little flame dance on one of the stone walls. She carefully wove Earth around it to feed it and it grew. "But you have to be very careful with Fire. If you can't control it, it might burn you or light something else to flames. So we should start with a simple weave of Fire." She wove a strand of Water and unlit two candles. "Now watch carefully." First she wove a strand of Air to make the candle float to her. She picked it up with her hand. Then she wove Fire, just a thin strand, enough to flame the candle. "Estinguishing Fire might be hard sometimes. Sometimes it's better to do it by other elements than Fire. If you try to draw Fire to yourself, you might burn yourself badly." She wove Air, a slight breeze that estinguished the flame. "Now try this, and do it several times so I can be certain you can control Fire. After that we will try a harder weav."
