((I'm just going to put it here, since it takes place on a few places...)) Mika turned around in her bed; muttering. This was so unfair. The blankets that covered her were rough and stiff, but they held the warmth that Mika’s body had produced over a night, and now felt nice and comfortable, especially as she led her fingers to her, near frozen nose, and sighed. Outside it was still dark, though it had just started to get a bit lighter; the sun would rise soon... and she was expected to be on the training grounds by that time, no doubt a couple of eyes on her. So she got up, as silent as possible as to not wake up Shaya, her roomie. Over the years she had actually gotten quite good at sneaking up and getting ready early; a trait that came with having to either be up early for pranking... or for the result of pranking: punishment... like now. “You are expected to be at the practice grounds at sunrise to clean them up before the recruits start their training. After that you will immediately seek out Rijomu Sedai of the Brown, whom you should manage to find in the library and aid her. She will take into account your classes and other chores off course. And this you will do until the next month starts.” Cayana Sedai’s words had sounded as she gave Mika punishment for turning recruits blue “until next month starts... why do they always have to give that punishment when the month has only just started?” she muttered under her breath as she washed her head with water that could have been frozen just as well “Oh cowdroppings” she whined with clenched jaws as she scrubbed away the sleep. As silent as she could be, Mika walked over the small rug towards the closet, thankful for the rough layer between the floor and her feet, for even with the rug between them, she could feel the cold seeping trough... and she had no desire to find out how the floor itself would be. Carefully handling the closet door so that it wouldn’t creak –after all, if one opened it naturally the left door always creaked- Mika reached out to take one of her white dresses and some undergarments an took them back to her bed where she started changing into them. And even though the clothes all felt cool, or even cold to the touch, soon Mika started feeling a bit warmer though and after she’d laced up her little white boots, she reached for a warm, -white of course- cloak and put that on before making her way out of the room into the, now empty, novice halls. The practice yard on the other hand was far from empty. Off course in the midst of the day it was swarmed with both men and women, training the arts of fighting, the way to keep their Aes Sedai or Asha’man out of harms way; but compared to how empty the white tower had seemed at this time of day, the thirty or fifty gaidin she could see –at least she assumed they were gaidin, judging by their movements- seemed to be a whole lot; though in no way they made the training yards seem crowded what so ever... they just were there.... a part of the area or so it seemed. “I assume you’re the culprit who turned quite a few of our students blue” a voice came from behind her and with a whirl Mika faced the gaidin and dropped into a curtsey, not really able to say anything she just blushed. “how mature and useful” the gaidin said in a dry tone and then continued “you can find all that you need in that cottage. I expect the grounds to be clean and the weapons in place and preferably shined and sharpened or repaired before the recruits get back from their breakfast.” Mika just curtsied once more, softly saying “Yes gaidin.” And then left after being dismissed. A month long getting u pat this unholy time to come here, outside and clean up... and who knows what Rijomu Sedai will have in store for me after this. Mika feared she’d have a very busy time up ahead. Maybe after that I should lay low on the pranking for a while she said to herself while walking to the shed and as she took out a broom she rubbed her arms. Surely the cloak and other clothes stopped something, but that cutting win... no, that they didn’t stop. So for a while Mika found herself sweeping on the huge training yards, trying no to let her work get ruined too much by the wind, and then collecting weapons that had gotten astray and lay somewhere wrong, clothes that had been discarded and whatnot, until, when she sat at the shed again, trying to get her fingers to warm up while rubbing an oiled lap over a sword the Gaidin came back, Mika once more got up and curtsied. “That’s enough for today. You are capable of starting with your new chores alone tomorrow and every other day I hope” the gaidin said dryly and then discarded her as he walked of, a dangerous sway in his movements. The novice just stretched and blew warm air into her cupped hands to try and warm them up. “I guess I should get going to the library then.” She said softly, making a note of passing by the mess hall to pick up a little something. Truly, hard bread and just a quick sip of water was nothing Mika loved, and she’d much rather have stayed for a bowl of porridge, but Cayana Sedai had said immediately, so as she munched on one of the breads she stuck another one in her pouch and made her way to the library, making sure that she’d finished every last scrap of it before she arrived. The library, like the practice yard and the infirmary, always seemed to have at least a couple of people in it... Browns and asha’man of the Aldieb’Cha mostly. Mika swiftly made her way to the librarian who was sitting, writing something in a book. She was a pretty woman; a Domani, no doubt about that, and one of the prettiest women in the Tower –at least to Mika’s thought- but the brown seemed not to know nor care. “yes child” the woman asked in a warm voice without even looking up. “I’m here to assist Rijomu Sedai, Cayana Sedai told me that I might find her here.” She said in a soft voice, not wanting to disturb the feeling of silence and respect that seemed to be a steady inhabitant of this place. “I believe Rijomu can be found somewhere in the fauna section” the sister answered without even changing her voice the slightest bit, she was just concentrated on her papers in front of her. “Thank you Aes Sedai” Mika said and turned around to leave for the fauna section. “Just a moment child” the sister then said softly, but it held command and managed to make Mika freeze in her tracks and whirl around immediately “Take that stack of books and put them where they belong and then give Rijomu this” she said while both pointing at a –too high- stack of books and handing the novice a small sealed letter. Mika just curtsied and did as she was told to. So after having crossed the library for a while –and dropping by Rijomu Sedai on the way to the ‘arts-section’ to let the brown know that she’d be right with her- Mika finally had managed to put the entire stack of books on their rightful places and then headed back to the brown sister who promptly sent her into a row of books to mark each and every page in a pile of books where she found information on a certain type of plant, however small the bit of information was. And so Mika’s day passed, switching between classes, chores and aiding Rijomu Sedai in the library, searching for more books with notes on that particular plant and logging what information she found there. This off course was combined with long amounts of walking back and forth, carrying a stack of books back or from the racks. When Mika finally reached her bed, at the last stroke or curfew chimes, sleep took her almost instantly; the only thing she was able to think about was the next day... and to wonder whether each day would be this tiresome. |

Retired Brown Sister

For almost a week now, Mika had been doing her new set of chores, and truly she was feeling rotten already, and she had still almost three weeks up ahead. Each day somehow seemed the same, just getting up at that unholy hour, before every one else in the white tower –or so it seemed at least- and then moving on to the training grounds to clean them up and oiling swords and whatnot. Then she’d move on to the library with a quick pass trough the mess hall for a few pieces of hard bread which she’d munch on while moving on to go and help Rijomu Sedai with her research on the Forkbush, who’s roots apparently had a very bad reaction for channelers. And during the rest of the day she’d either tend to her regular tasks: her classes and chores etc, or help around the brown sister, mostly fetching books, reading trough them, marking pages and copying sentences. Her week had been utterly boring and tiresome. “No Seira, I don’t get to talk to ‘cute recruits’” Mika said, only slightly irritated to the other novice whom she actually was helping with her homework. “I am there before they train you know... the cute recruits are all either sleeping or eating breakfast at that time. The only ones I get to see are a few Gaidin... and I’d rather not look at them, for they always seem to know if I’m looking and then they’d be angry at me for not continuing my cleaning.” She explained and watched the other novice pout for a brief moment; “oh” was all the girl said. “Now if you don’t mind, could we please move on? Rijomu Sedai has not made me work till curfew chimes for once so after you understand this I’d like to go to bed as soon as possible.” Mika hardly knew why the other sister had let her go early today, but it was not like any Aes Sedai would explain their reasons to a mere novice, so Mika just thankfully had managed to get back to her room on a decent hour; there had even been a warm meal left for her in the mess hall... something she had to miss out on for the last week... every time she’d passed the mess hall this week while going back to her room, there had been nothing left anymore, nothing warm at least. So for a moment Seira and Mika went over Seiras papers, the young Seira explaining what she did not understand, and Mika, who rather enjoyed the role of big sister she’d taken over the younger novice, did her best to explain the answers. The two young girls were studying the workings recent technology; a subject that both interested Mika as lay –or so it seemed- within her talents of learning. The young girl wasn’t all that for bookknowledge; and neither did she enjoyed learning, but somehow she had a rather technical; practical mind and had little problems with making logical connections in how technology worked. Mika was just in the middle of explaining her friend something about a fast way of irrigation by screwing up groundwater, when suddenly a knock was heard. The novices soon saw Cayana Sedai and even before they managed to get up and curtsey; Mika had been called away and the Mistress of Novices had already left again, making the young Andoran girl scurry after her, a momentary pained look on her face as she expected even more punishment for whatever she might have done wrong. As she tried to catch up with the Aes sedai though; Mika started thinking about how the Aes Sedai had looked and what she’d said. And something told her it wasn’t for punishment. She’d been called away too many times not to know the difference between Cayana’s composure now and when she’d be punished. Why she’d be called away however still was a mystery. Cayana Sedai led them into a small study room and told Mika in a gentle to sit down; another abnormal thing, since punishment was either given right where she stood or in her own office; and most certainly not in a gentle tone. Mika shifted about a bit nervous on her chair, something was not right here. "I have something to tell you, it concerns your brother." Cayana’s words had immediately jerked up Mika’s head. Feeling that her own brother would manage to do everything, she immediately assumed that the mistress of novices had merely taken her here to inform her he had passed the test and maybe even had chosen a shen already. Yet even though she tried to push it away, in her subconscious a dark feeling started blooming, being fed by the strangeness of the entire situation. Cayana started explaining about Eilas raising and that he hadn't come back. During the time the Aes Sedai was explaining Mikas face went from cheery to confused to aghast. "I am afraid, that he is lost. He won't come back. I am sorry." Cayana Sedai added and then fell silent. Mika just looked at the woman in horror, trying to grasp what she had just heard. Every novice off course had been taught about the arches, the basics. They were taught on that no-one knew what transpired within the arches and that it was assumed that the arches led someone to other, parallel worlds, maybe a bit like the Dreamworld. "I am afraid, that he is lost. He won't come back.” the words spooked trough her head again. And she lifted her gaze from the table to Cayana Sedai, who only emanated Aes Sedai Serenity, though compassion lay in her eyes and face as well. "I am afraid, that he is lost. He won't come back.” “lost” she softly whispered... her voice more broken then how she felt; mostly numb. “Elia”... she whispered then and then shook her head and pulled out a smile. Somewhere in her eyes however lay insecurity and even the smile was a hesitant one even though she produced a short laugh. The laugh, that was supposed to be pleasant, sounded rather hollow and scared though. “Elia would never fail his test! He loves it here. He can do anything he starts to do. “ she tried to make her voice steadfast and strong. “he cannot have failed; he wouldn’t leave me here alone.” The last words were supposed to be uttered with conviction, but actually sounded more like a plea. For how long she had been crying, Mika could not tell, the only thing she remembered were Cayana Sedai’s words about the ceremony the next day and that she’d been given a day of to grief. She felt utterly lonely as she walked back to her room, feeling the cold of the hall spread trough her. In her room she got to meet Shaya, and, while Mika had been the older sister to Seira, she now cried like a babychild in the arms of her new roomie, trying to convince herself that tonight had not happened. The next day came and Mika went trough it like a zombie, the only light of the day was the fact that she somehow had managed to break her block; but still at a time like that, Mika hardly felt happiness about it. And then off course, after her day of grievance there had been the extra classes. Earlier Mike had believed that her days could not be any harder and longer but she’d proven to be wrong. Uncaring to her eye, the Aes Sedai just kept her busy, and made her –or so it seemed to her at least- work almost twice as hard in order to ‘make her forget’ about Elia or so. Wherre Mika had been in bed at curfew, tired of a hard days work, she now often found herself still in the library, aiding Rijomu Sedai further. But in a way it had it’s effect... even though they pushed her, Mika started to work harder and faster, if only to get to her bed early enough so that she’d at least have some decent sleep, and she managed, trough the work, to keep her mind of her ‘lost’ brother... or at least sometimes. |

Retired Brown Sister

Half asleep Mika rolled out of bed and stumbled to the washing basin and it’s icy water. It had nearly been a month, but still getting up this early was every bit as hard as the first time. Well not exactly every last bit, but it came quite close to it. “come on girl… one more day and then you can sleep late again” she whispered softly to herself. sleep late ? she suddenly wondered as she frozen in her tracks. A smile crossed her face. well this is the first time I’ve thought of getting up at the normal hour as sleeping late she mused with a grin before plunging her head in the bowl of icy water. Surely the getting up was hard, and the cold weather outside wasn’t fun either, but somehow she’d gotten used to it by now, and to her own shame she had to admit that the fresh air in the morning managed to give her more energy then sleeping another hour or two. Of course she hadn’t seen things this way all the time; at first she’d hated it and had overslept a few times accidentally. She’d cried even, but then had realized that it was her own fault and that, however those kind of pranks were, they weren’t exactly gainful. She reached the practice yard and went straight to the shed to pick up a broom and some other stuff. Most of the gaidin now ignored the young girl, or at least to Mika’s eyes, but still she couldn’t help but feel that the perfectly knew what she was doing on every single moment that she was there. But at least they ignored her… as well as the few recruits that had eaten breakfast early. Unlike a while ago. Apparently some of the recruits and younglings found out that Mika and some friends had been the culprits of their blue skin, and for a while they’d been teasing her and pranking her, putting spiders in the bucket which she had to use, smearing icky…. Stuff on her broom and whatnot. Mika had not cried or showed any emotion at that time, even though she had cried later in her room, but apparently the gaidin had noticed something –if only the slight increase of recruits in the practice yard for a while- and then the pranks had stopped as certain recruits had disappeared again; two of which Mika had seen hopping after a brown sister, loaded with books, the next day. As she had finished sweeping the entire yards and picking up all the training weapons and left clothes, she made her way back to the shed to start oiling in weapons. Partially she liked this aspect of her punishment most; she didn’t have to be very concentrated while doing it, and she was kept out of the wind. But on the other hand, it felt useless, and while she had be concentrated all the time while helping Rijomu Sedai, she at least learned something from it. If only it was NEVER to drink tea made of the root of the forkbush. Somewhere she heard chimes ring, time for the practice to begin. So Mika got up and put down the oiled cloth and the scimitar she was oiling; having a strange feeling as she left she shed; she couldn’t pinpoint it down, but it somehow felt like… not like she’d miss it –blight no!- but… it had on this short period of time become a piece of her, and had only made her wish to once be a green a lot stronger. Quickly the novice made her way over the tower grounds back into the shared halls of the towers, quickly since that blasted wind had managed to pick up and practically froze her even trough her smallclothes. “Mothersmilk…. I need to be an Aes Sedai soon… so that I learn that weave to not feel the cold and the wind anymore!” she muttered under her breath as she walked into the halls, her hair looking as if she’d walked trough a hurricane. Irritated, Mika tried to brush her hair back with her fingers as she walked towards the library, with as always the slight detour past the mess hall to pick up a few pieces of bread. And as she put her ribbon back in place before picking up a couple, Mika wondered how much weight she’d lost this month, for she had had far less sleep and food then usual. But somehow she’d actually managed to get used to it; she’d felt horrible and weak about it at first, but somehow it was ok now. Ok so the fact that her roomie often left her quite a few nice things on her bed in the evening could be helping that, but still. As she entered the library and went to the librarian to pick up a stack of books to put back into place, like usually, suddenly the woman looked up at her, it was only the second time she’d done that in this mnoth, and the first time had been when she’d given Mika a serious glance –one of them stares where they seemed to look right trough you and see what you were up to- and a note of the sister to meet her in an inn in town, accompanied with a letter that allowed her to leave the gates. At some moments Mika had thought that it had been to keep her mind of her brothers… disappearance but then again, she always told herself that Aes Sedai wouldn’t bother with petty things like that and that it just was coincidence. But this time the woman gave her that look again and Mika automatically curtsied. “After you’ve taken these books to their place, Rijomu wants you to look for these books and take them up to her room.” The Domani Brown handed her a note with quite a list of books. “yes Aes Sedai” Mika said immediately. and how am I supposed to carry up that many? Oh light… So for a while Mika kept herself occupied with returning books and then looking for other books, but at least she knew where most of those were located, after all she had been using hem before, and quite a bit. And then she made her way back into the halls, on her way to the brown sisters quarters, the stack of books reaching up to her nose. one extra book and I wouldn’t be able to see anymore she thought as she made her way up the stairs to the Brown Ajah halls; happy because those were the closest to the ground floor. The day went by like usual, Mika spent all her free time in the Aes Sedais quarters, aiding her by looking into books written in the old tongue. Not that she could understand anything, but the Brown sister had given her a list of words which she had to look out for and mark the pages on which they were written. Mika assumed that the words were something like ‘sedative’ mint flavored tea’ or ‘forkroot’ or at least words that had something to do with it. And as she heard the first chimes to warn novices that soon they had to be in their rooms, the Aes Sedai looked up and had a thoughtful expression on her face. “This is your last day isn’t it child?” Mika nodded, knowing full well that should the Aes Sedai wish so she could command her to help her some more, but unlike she expected the Aes Sedai just let her go. “well you have been most helpful, and I hope you’ve learned your lesson, now you can go girl” Once more Mika curtsied and then left the sister to head back to her room where a few of her friends were waiting for her to have a tiny –after all curfew would be very soon- party that her punishment was finally over and she could spend some time with them again. The next morning came, and Mika lay in her bed, her arms crossed behind her head. She’d laid like this for a few minutes now, and she couldn’t find sleep anymore. “oh nice… now that I finally get to sleep late…” she muttered and then finally got up again, thinking that she could as well get a fresh nose if she was up already. After she’d washed herself she made her way into the gardens. Unlike the day before there seemed to be very little wind, even though the air looked as if it were to rain later on. It kinda felt good to be outside and have a fresh nose now, and she smiled as she walked towards the mess hall, this time knowing that she would not have to be satisfied by a few breads, but that she would actually be able to sit down and enjoy some porridge… freshly made. Mika was still smiling as she took up a plate and walked up to the novice with sleepy eyes who apparently had morning duty today. The girl just looked a tad surprised at her; but obviously was still too sleepy to say anything and so Mika just sat down on a table and started enjoying her breakfast; and actually taking the time to do so. But still it was early and as she walked out of the mess hall, only the first of the other novices started walking in, not even very decent yet. Now what? Mika wondered, and before she knew it, her legs were carrying her to the library and soon her hands were filled with books again to put them in their place before she went to a rack about poetry. 'Timeless Poems' the book she searched was called; it was a book filled with poems in the Old Tongue, with next to each poem the translation of it, made by an Aes Sedai some hundred years ago; Rijomu Sedai had told her that once she’d started learning the Old Tongue from that very book. So that day, and just about every single day after that Mika sat down in the library after her breakfast and read, and learned; using the free time she’d discovered she had so much of. |
