Asha'man al'Dieb Cha, Lost during the War

(( of course, with permission from my mentor.
))Getting up proved another battle, as Edeleas found out. All the extra work of holding classes and prolonged practice with the Gaidin was taking its toll on him, and now waking up early was slowly turning into a nasty job. But so far he made it, thanks to Rishid, his ever-punctual roommate. Like today, Edeleas was still comfortably buried under his blankets when Rishid tapped him briskly and sent him blinking as he sat up. Rishid left early, leaving Edeleas to wash his teeth, shave and bathe while half-asleep. Afterward, while pulling on his black coat and pinning the Sword to his left collar, Edeleas slowly regained his senses after a good, long yawn. He straightened up and pushed his glasses a little higher on his nose as he observed himself on the mirror for a last time. He went outside, treading the familiar path toward the Training halls, being greeted by Soldiers, Recruits and Novices who were running in the opposite direction. Edeleas regarded them all absently, as he was busy thinking what his mentor, Asha'man Rialt, would teach him. It had been months since they last saw each other, and those rare instances were never good; often it was to scold him and send him doing extra work because of his...'experiments'. Edeleas shifted uncomfortably at the thought. The hallways of the Training halls were empty, but he could already sense saidin springing up in every which way, telling him that the trainings started early. It was strange, because trainings usually started after the second chime of the day. Edeleas quickly found the familiar room he and his mentor used countless times before, and he entered. There was nobody present yet, so Edeleas folded his legs underneath him and sat down on the bare marble floors and flipped open the book he'd borrowed from the library. Entitled The Song of The Land, it contained remarkable notes and techniques for Earth Singing. Edeleas was very taken with the subject because he was, after all, graced by the Earth, thanks be to the Light. The minutes snailed by in silence, broken only as the crisp crunching of paper permeated the air as Edeleas turned a page. That's strange...Asha'man Rialt should be here by now... Edeleas thought as his gaze very nearly bore a hole through the hundredth page. He's NEVER late...I wonder what happened to him...? Maybe I should go looking for him instead...he might have forgotten...but, Light, he never forgets when it comes to -! He gave a start as the door opened. Edeleas quickly jumped to his feet, and after carefully marking his page, looked up to greet his mentor with a lively "Good morning, Asha'man". But his mouth only got as far as open itself, for the Asha'man standing before him wasn't the Mahdi al'Tain. "Good morning," the Asha'man said in clipped tones. "I am Tishoan Gemal, and I will be your mentor. You are Edeleas, I trust? Pardon me for being late, as I was needed in the Infirmary an hour ago. So, shall we start?" Asha'man Tishoan touched saidin, but Edeleas made no move to do the same. He just stared until the Asha'man cocked his eyebrows and cleared his throat. Edeleas blinked and pushed his glasses, at first fumbling for words. "I do not understand. Where did Asha'man Rialt go? He is my mentor." He hoped he did not put too much emphasis in the word is; some Asha'man were so touchy that before you could even blink they were upon you with a cartful of punishment. "Yes, yes, of course." Tishoan said, waving a hand. "Forgive me, I am sorry. I tend to...forget the important parts, you see..." Edeleas frowned through his glasses. He was liking this man less and less, but he kept silent. Never speak unless you are spoken to, so the sayings in Tar Valon went. But he would have preferred Asha'man Sidivin or Asha'man Mishael instead... "The Mahdi al'Tain has asked me to teach you and guide you in honing your talents in the element of Earth," Tishoan explained conversationally. "You know men and women both have different strengths and weaknesses when it comes to the One Power. I believe the Creator made us so to have balance in the world. Rialt knows he cannot help you much in Earth, as his own potentials lie elsewhere. So I am here to be your mentor instead. We are both from the same Shen. I am N'Dore." Edeleas' face was blank, but he could not protest. He gave a quick nod. "I understand, Asha'man." "That is quite all right," the older man smiled. Then Edeleas started to notice what he was doing. He started weaving flows. "To start. Can you guess what I am making here?" Edeleas squinted as the flows of Earth moved and squirmed against each other, fusing and connecting, expanding and growing bigger and bigger. Each flow seemed...hollow...and there was also this weird throb that he could almost hear, only, he could not hear anything at all. The Asha'man pumped in more saidin and the flows got fatter. Edeleas' eyes widened. |

"Now. Can you guess what I am making here?" Tishoan asked once more. Edeleas gave his glasses a push and very nearly failed to hide an annoyed huff that came from his lips. He hated being treated like a boy; he was no longer one, but he could not erase the feeling that this Asha'man was treating him like a child. But Asha'man Rialt ordered that this...this man was to be his mentor, so he had to obey. Edeleas wondered when he could have his original teacher back; else he could not work properly with this man. He had always been like that; if he did not want the person working with him, their work inevitably turned into disaster. It was one of his main weaknesses; like the one time Mistress of Arms Kiren Thym assigned him to a Youngling named Kara. Edeleas disliked the girl from the start, and they ended up being lectured by both Kiren Gaidin and Asha'man Rialt. "A net." Edeleas replied dully. "A net of Earth." "Very good," Tishoan nodded. "You are a quick thinker, like what they say. Laridian was all too happy to give me your description. Seems to think you're a genius of the Black Tower." at this, he smiled mysteriously. Edeleas felt a vein throb somewhere in his forehead, and his hands suddenly itched to go to his hips. The Light grant me patience and forbearance. I do not want to end up in the M'Hael's office. The Light grant me patience and forbearance. I do not want to end up in the M'Hael's office. The Light grant me... Edeleas repeated the prayer in his head. It helped him calm down. A bit. He chose not to reply to the comment Tishoan gave him; he might end up saying other things instead. His lower lip quivered. "Rialt says you're an Earth Singer and a very strong Delver." Tishoan continued. "I myself am aware of your detecting a mine in Arafel before you came to be here. Now, can you tell me exactly how you do your Delving? A Delving technique is unique to each Aes Sedai and Asha'man. Some enter trances, while some just stop dead wherever they're walking and point a finger and say, 'Hey, there's a mine there!'." The question set Edeleas thinking for a moment. He turned his head away and fixed his green eyes onto the floor, where a couple of ants were crawling. Just how did he... Then his head snapped up and went to Tishoan's face. "I lose track of things once I start hearing resonances from the ground." he explained. "It seems to me I enter a sort of trance. And then I walk around a lot; I usually don't know where I'm going, my feet just take me there. When I stop circling the vicinity, that is how big the mine should be. I can only tell what ores are underneath and how the big the mine is, but to know how deep the holes must be..." he trailed off and shrugged. "Aha!" Tishoan said, clapping once. "Now this weave I will teach you will be of immense help. Can you see it? All right? Good! Now weave your own net. Commence." Edeleas felt dull as he touched the male half of the True Source. He still felt bored even when saidin rushed into him, filling him with sweet life and heightened his senses. Then he weaved the net, exactly how Tishoan did it. It was easy work. Now they stood ready with their nets. Tishoan raised a finger. "Now, follow me." He instructed. "I guess you hadn't known this until now, but Tar Valon is built on a very wide ore deposit. The ores were never exploited due to the decision of the Amyrlin Seat and the M'Hael, because it is a good training ground for Earth Singers and Delvers like you. Okay. Follow me closely...and thrust your net deep into the ground. Pump in equal fist-size saidin as you go deeper. Yes, that's right...proceed...you're doing well..." Edeleas looked to the floor instead. He was getting annoyed more. Then he felt it. The silvery echo of copper, the rough chime of iron and the solid bang of chromium. He gave his glasses a quick push and...extended his net. He felt the end weaves extending (and he wasn't exactly sure how he did it), the tendrils reaching, reaching and touching. Light, so many ores clumped together like grapes! Then he realized Tishoan had long stopped weaving his net. He looked up, and the man was smiling encouragingly. "You can extend your net," the Asha'man said wonderingly. "Now that is a mark of a very strong Delver. I can only go for a mile underground, but if you learn more I think you can go leagues. That is your very own unique Delve. You can extend nets. I'm very impressed. Cut weave." Edeleas obeyed and released saidin. He stood ready for instructions, but Tishoan was still looking at the floor as he absently rubbed his chin. Then he spoke. "Rialt and Zekieal also mentioned you can create earthquakes. Is that true? Can you create other things, then?" For a moment Edeleas recalled the little girl's blank face, surrounded by ruined buildings. He forced the thought aside. "Yes. I recently discovered I can use earth spikes in combat. That was the accident in the Gaidin yard a week ago." He replied in the same dull tone. |

Asha'man al'Dieb Cha, Lost during the War

Tishoan noted the indifference in the boy's voice, but he let it pass. This Edeleas seemed to be very fond of Rialt; if not, then he would not have treated the lesson in this manner. But he was here to train the boy, nothing more, and he was not one who gave punishments for people not liking him. There was a saying that went, I do not know the key to success; but the key to failure is trying to please everybody. Tishoan earnestly believed in that saying. "Can you describe what happened in the Gaidin yard, Edeleas?" Tishoan asked politely. "It might help us get a grip of your strenghts and weaknesses as an Earth Singer better." Edeleas fumbled for his glasses. "I was practicing with a Youngling named Kara" He winced, and Tishoan knew he disliked the girl the same as he disliked him. "She was cheating me; Kiren Gaidin said to practice only with a single sword, but she was having a go with me with her short dagger. I got so angry I made earth spikes pop; I managed to give her a wounded thigh. The spikes were ten foot high, and very sharp on the tip." "Have you tried manipulating mud or sand before, Edeleas?" The boy paused for a bit to give his glasses a push. "Not exactly...no. No, I haven't." "Edeleas, you must understand that being Earth Singer does not just involve hard packed dirt or huge, creaking boulders." Tishoan explained. "Being an Earth Singer, you must know how to manipulate Earth in all of its forms - mud, sand, boulders, soil, clay...whichever way you like it. An Asha'man knowing the Earth can unlock or develop other Talents such as Spinning Earthfire. Rialt has mentioned you are also quite dangerous with fire; he told me about your eyes." Again, the boy did not respond. Tishoan continued. "Before you are raised Asha'man, I assure you that you will have Elementalism added to your Talents list, along with others such as angreal-making, aligning the matrix, or even materialisation. But we aren't here to discuss those yet. How strong was the earthquake you made back in Cairhien?" Edeleas' lips curled with distaste; even then Tishoan knew this was sensitive ground - the boy could even have had the earthquake in Cairhien repeated to him when he passed the Three Arches. Tishoan waited patiently for the boy's answer. He got them soon enough. "It was very strong." Edeleas answered. "I destroyed half of the New Foregate." Bingo! Tishoan thought. He looked at Edeleas with a fresh perspective. The boy was undoubtedly going to be a real asset for the Black Tower in the future. He had encountered very few powerful Earth Singers in his lifetime - always they had been able to destroy cities, level forests and flatten mountains in some point of their lives. He would teach this boy and hone him, no matter how the boy did not like his company. Now that he had a goal, he was unstoppable. And that goal was to make this boy one of the Black Tower's stars. "I see." Tishoan nodded. "Now. I would like you to remake that earthquake. Right here, right now." The boy looked at him with disbelief, but Tishoan said nothing. Let him know I am not kidding. And then, the boy jerkily stood up straight and closed his eyes in concentration. Tishoan immediately felt him drawing on saidin, taking the male half of the True Source into him until he was very well toeing the limits, where sweetness started to turn into stinging pain. Edeleas started weaving the flows - Tishoan could not identify it all at once, the boy was quick, as if he did not want him to know how he made his earthquakes - and then thrust the gigantic weave into the ground. At first it was dead quiet - Tishoan immediately felt the other mentors and their mentees let go of saidin - and then the earth started to groan and tremble. |

Asha'man al'Dieb Cha, Lost during the War

The earthquake was strong, but Edeleas made a point not to make it reach the same magnitude of the one he'd made back in Cairhien. When he started to hear voices from outside, he quickly released the True Source with a long breath and gave his glasses a push. He looked up at Asha'man Tishoan, who was fingering his chin pensively as he looked at him in an appraising sort of way. Edeleas resisted the urge to turn away and mumble something that would very much be insulting for his temporary mentor. He would not want attracting trouble now; he had far too many on his list already. He gave a start when someone knocked at the door, but Asha'man Tishoan got there first. Edeleas remained where he was. The door opened a bit, and Edeleas saw curious Dedicated, Soldiers and even Asha'man asking Tishoan in low voices about what had happened. Two Soldiers even pointed at him. Edeleas frowned at them before turning his gaze away. Now he wasn't feeling in a very good mood. It was rare for him to siphon off his frustration to other people, and a few more hours with the older man might just well make him do that. He could always catch Soldiers sneaking off or doing something 'below the book', and he'd relax himself by sending them to an errand or two. "Yes, yes, everything's fine, nothing to worry!" Asha'man Tishoan was saying to the crowd at the door. "We were just having some hands-on practice! Nothing to worry about! Now go back to your own trainings and such!" And so saying he slammed the door shut on the faces of the other men. The Asha'man turned from the door, rubbing his hands briskly as if he'd been interrupted from doing a very important business. Edeleas winced. He so wanted for this day to end. "Powerful, no doubt." Tishoan continued as if there had never been any bother in the first place. "I can see why half of the New Foregate fell like dominoes after you dealt with the land the buildings there have been standing on. And you weren't even half-trained then. I sensed earlier that you had been holding back - and that was very good of you. You knew that unleashing your true capacity would bring the Black Tower upon our heads in a snap of your fingers. Now, I can see that apart from Earth-Singing, you also unlocked a third Talent. Elementalism, the one responsible for your accident in the Gaidin yard. You're very interesting." But I am no guinea pig, Edeleas thought huffily. Just get on with what you're supposed to teach, burn you! I've no time for useless babbles about things I already know! "Now, here." Tishoan said as he took saidin in him again. Edeleas sighed and did the same, drawing enough of the True Source. "What I am going to teach you is quite complex. Every Delver must know this. This is the weave for extracting ores from the ground." |

Asha'man al'Dieb Cha, Lost during the War

Edeleas perked up after hearing what Tishoan said. Extracting ores from the ground? Now, this was definitely of interest to him. For a moment his annoyance at his new mentor wavered. Edeleas pushed his glasses and stared hard at his mentor, saidin pulsing within him, ready to be used. He wanted to learn this so much, he practically quivered with excitement. Now he could extract proof whenever he went away; something he could use to his defense, if ever his lame excuses would get through Asha'man Rialt's tough reasoning. But you're making it sound you're up to more mischief! Bloody idiot! "Now, observe closely." Tishoan instructed. "This weave is not simple, and I am warning you now that you might take weeks to master how it is made. I have heard from Rialt that you become heavily annoyed when you can't do something the first time." He smiled shrewdly. "But that is a mark of a talented one, I'm happy to say. Now pay attention." He wove arm-thick flows that were entirely of Earth, twisting and bending them around each other so that it somehow formed an arrowhead shape. Edeleas squinted closely. What he said is true. I get annoyed when I don't manage to do something firsthand. But I can do this. And then the Asha'man thrust the arrowhead flow of Earth into he ground, and Edeleas watched in amazement. The ground became...liquid...and then it started to churn as the arrowhead flow went deeper and deeper. Then it started to sink upon itself like a grisly whirlpool, deepening, until the first rough corner of a fist-sized chunk of chromium. Edeleas knew his eyes had gotten so big they could have covered half of his face. He felt his adrenaline rush up; he wanted to try the flow for himself; it was easy, he knew he could do it! Tishoan bent and picked up the chunk of chromium. Edeleas blinked; he hadn't felt the man release the True Source. The floor remained as it was before, smooth, showing no sign at all that it had been turned into water just seconds before. The man gave him the chromium chunk, and Edeleas touched it carefully in his hands, letting his palm press into the rough face. It was hot like a newly-baked bread taken out from the oven. He looked up. "Why is it hot?" "I thought you wouldn't ask," Tishoan smiled as he inclined his head to acknowledge the question. "It is hot because we got it from such depth, where heat and pressure is tremendous. Add the force applied by the flow of Earth I used - well, that is one thing you will have to consider. The girth of the flow must be just right to prevent the ores from melting. Now, I would like to see you try. You have sensed the gold, I trust? I would like you to get me two fists of it, in a ball, not an ounce deformed or melted. Prepare weave." Edeleas nodded and weaved the flows in exactly the same manner how he saw them being done. He wrestled the earthen saidin into the familiar arrowhead and thrust it forcefully into the floor. Once more, the ground lurched as if turned to mud, sinking into itself, swirling, forming a vortex in the middle of it all. Edeleas frowned in concentration, and sweat started bedewing his forehead. He reached deep, fumbling for the gold, and pumped in more saidin into his task. Somehow he knew he was toeing his limits. To go further without any harm he would need an angreal. He felt pain starting to lick his insides as he strained. "Do not force yourself, boy!" Tishoan's voice cracked like a whip. "I said do not try to force yourself!" But Edeleas displayed his defiance. He smiled smugly and pushed further, and the pain increased. He ignored it. He was filled with life. He was alive. Dimly he sensed Tishoan preparing a sinister weave of Spirit. I don't care. I'll show him. I'm not a BOY! And then, just before he was shielded, Edeleas gasped, and two balls of gold shot from the vortex on the floor and bounced off the cieling. Drawing that much of the power weakened, him, and he collapsed onto his backside, panting. Tishoan let go of the shielding he'd nearly used, and used Air instead to bring the balls of gold toward him. They were very hot, but not melted. Amazing. "That was very dangerous, Edeleas." He said sternly. "I would not like you to do that again, lest you suffer my and Rialt's displeasure." But Edeleas did not listen whatsoever. |
