Shaya realised that she had not been in the Aes Sedai quarters very often and this was definitely her first time in the Halls of the Green Ajah. Cayana had told her where to go though and so she had no trouble finding Gemena’s rooms. It was unsettling to pass by so many Aes Sedai and endure their challenging looks as to why a novice was invading their privacy. As soon as she entered the Green Halls there was a distinct change of atmosphere. There seemed to be a lot of men around for one thing and most of them seemed to be shirtless, probably caused by the fact that the temperature seemed unusually high for the time of the year. Shaya soon found herself wishing she too knew how to ignore the heat like an Aes Sedai and blew some cool air in her face. She stopped in front of a heavily decorated dark wooden door and gave a modest knock. She listened for a reply from within and was taken by surprise when the door suddenly flew open as if opened by an invisible hand. Shaya realised she should have sensed Saidar being embraced so close, but there was so much channelling in the Tower that she had grown accustomed to the feeling now. “Took your sweet time, didn’t you child?” Shaya looked up and looked over the tall blonde with a hint of surprise. She had not heard the woman walk up at all, which was very unusual. Regaining her composure quickly, she swept a deep curtsy and made an effort to appear meek and pliable. “I apologise for being late, Gemena Sedai, my morning chores took longer than I expected.” The answer came smoothly and Shaya made sure she kept her eyes on the tips of her shoes. She had heard a few things about Gemena and none of them very positive. “Well don’t stand there wasting more of my time, come in and close the door behind you.” As Shaya looked up again, the Aes Sedai had already moved inside and was sitting down in a chair, studying her calmly over a cup of tea, made from fine Athan’miere china. Shaya resisted the urge to shift uncomfortably under that gaze and kept her eyes on the floor in stubborn pride. After what seemed a lifetime, Gemena chuckled softly to herself and ordered Shaya to pour her some more tea with a royal gesture of her hand. As Shaya stood pouring the tea, she thoughtfully tapped her lips with a finger and said: “Now then, Cayana tells me you were caught breaking into the Angreal storerooms. That is quite a serious offence for a novice, not to mention a very unrewarding one at that.” Something in Shaya’s expression must have revealed her surprise that Gemena knew, for the Aes Sedai sat back with an amused smile and said: “What? You didn’t think Cayana would tell me child? The minute you walked through those wards, I knew about it anyway.” The Aes Sedai gave her a haughty look before sipping from the cup that Shaya handed her silently. A lot of things were starting to make sense as Shaya realised that Gemena was the one who had created the Wards on the door to the storage room. Gemena gave a secret smile as she saw this realisation dawn on Shaya’s face. “I think I fancy taking a bath, so you can start by making sure I have enough hot water to fill my tub.” She indicated the fire and a large cauldron that stood beside it. Shaya made an effort to keep her face composed, as Gemena seemed to be studying it for any hint of emotion, but inwardly she groaned. It would take several trips down the long winding set of steps to get the pails of water that would fill up that cauldron. When she did not immediately spring into action, Gemena arched an eyebrow and said nonchalantly. “You’d best hurry child, for if that water is not hot in an hour, I will make you wish you had never been born.” Shaya made a hurried curtsy and darted out the room. It would take almost an hour for the water to heat up in those amounts and at least 6 or 7 trips with two buckets to fill it up. She rushed down the stairs into the kitchens and grabbed 2 buckets before the Mistress of the Kitchens could stop her and hurried out back to fill them up at the pump. Grinding her teeth, she picked up the two pails, that turned out to be surprisingly heavy when full, and started the long walk back up the stairs to the Green Halls. The bucket handles were cutting into her hands long before she reached the bottom of the stairs and half way on her way up, her legs were screaming at her in protest. She tried to walk as quickly, yet careful as she could, but the water still sloshed over the edges and soaked her dress till she could feel the water slosh in her shoes. Slightly out of breath, she arrived at Gemena’s door again and shouldered her way through it, blowing the hair out of her face as she did so. Gemena was sitting in her chair, calmly reading a book and ignoring her as if she did not exist. Shaya poured the water in the cauldron with more vigour than was strictly necessary and shot the Aes Sedai’s back an angry stare. Picking up the empty buckets again, Shaya gave a small sigh and made the trip back down again for the second time. By the time the cauldron was full, Shaya was ready to cry with exhaustion and her legs were trembling with the effort of just standing up. She swung the cauldron over the logs in the fireplace and looked around for a taper to light the fire with. Without looking up from her book, Gemena said: “Use my tinder box, it’s over there in that chest in the corner.” Shaya shot the Aes Sedai another broody look when she was sure the woman could not see and got up from her knees. Her back felt like a horse had trampled over her and she could only imagine how much pain she would be in when the muscle ache kicked in. She walked over to the chest and put her hands on the heavy claps that held it shut. As soon as her skin touched the metal, a jolt of pain as if her arms were on fire, shot up her arms, sending her flying back until she was sprawled out on the floor. Tears sprang in her eyes as she huddled there, waiting for the pain to subside. When she looked up moments later through eyes that were blurry from the tears, she saw Gemena looking down on her with folded arms. “Maybe that will teach you to check before you open something. That was a simple Ward child and I didn’t invert or hide the weaves in any way. Being tired is no excuse for letting your guard down.” Shaya scrambled up slowly and clenched her jaws against the pain that seemed to be all over her body now. She would not give Gemena the satisfaction of seeing her flinch. “Now try again and this time use the Power to see the Ward.” Filling herself with Saidar made things both better and worse at the same time. As the bitter sweet sensation of the Power coursed through her, she was able to ignore the pain in her weary body, but at the same time it seemed the pain was so much stronger. Kneeling down in front of the box, she squinted until she was able to pick out the minute weaves that enveloped the chest. They seemed to be a combination of Spirit and a small hint of Fire. “This is a simple Ward I made to notify me if someone tries to open the chest as well as give them a nasty surprise for touching it. It has been set to detect humans only, so it would not be set off by shadow spawn, but I have other wards set up through out the room for that purpose.” She walked to the window and looked outside as Shaya squinted at the weaves with interest, her pain and discomfort momentarily forgotten. “A little more fire and that weave would have killed you.” Gemena turned from the window and met Shaya’s eyes to make sure she understood the lesson being taught. Shaya nodded slowly in understanding; she was quick on the uptake when it came to things that preserved her life. “I think that will be enough for today, report to me again in the morning and we shall continue your punishment.” Shaya got up from the chest and curtsied low to the Green, releasing Saidar as she did so. “Thank you Gemena Sedai.” She walked out the apartments and made the walk back to her rooms with a thoughtful expression. Gemena had given her a lot to think about and she realised that Cayana had wanted to do her a favour by giving her the opportunity to learn from the other Green like that. If she doesn’t kill me in the process…. |
