"You'll be emptying the chamber pots in the Accepted and Novice halls for a month." Marian could remember Cayana Sedai’s words exactly. It was only one week into her punishment, actually, only a few days, but Marian was far from enjoying it. Light, she hadn’t done this much work since she was a novice! Marian knew perfectly well that she was there for a reason, and she agreed with the Mistress of Novices and her mentor for sending her for punishment. After all, one did not just visit her mentor in the middle of the night without expecting some consequences, especially if her mentor was the Amyrlin Seat. It was odd – though Marian was not enjoying the chores, she was not frustrated or annoyed with them. She could remember her feelings as a novice and her thoughts, such as Light, when will this bloody end? Today, however, she was looking forward to her being done, but she felt no complaints arise within her. Seshi would have been proud. The whole thing had risen from the fact that her maid, Seshi, was dead. The pain still hung heavy over her heart, and Marian did grieve for her friend, but there was comfort in the place that she was too. Seshi had been like a second mother to her, perhaps more nuturing than her own mother had been most of her life. Light, Seshi probably had cared for her more. Lady Skylas’s last note had been brief and… Those thoughts did make Marian’s heart burn. She had had to become Aes Sedai. Surely, her mother knew that. She’d been the one to reason with Seshi in order to let her go to the White Tower! And now, she acted as though Marian were no more than an acquaintance. Marian hadn’t sent a single letter back home since the last letter from her mother. And she didn’t plan to. She’d give them a visit when she became Aes Sedai… That she would! See what they’d do then, when she wore her shawl and ring… She stopped short at those thoughts, emptying another chamber pot into the large bucket she was carrying around. She wrinkled her nose, clearly showing her distaste for such, but no one was around. Still no complaints rose… Actually, thinking about it, Marian hadn’t had to go to the White Tower. She was one of the girls who could learn to channel. She would have been safe without the training that they’d given her, here at the White Tower. She briefly wondered why she had come. The Wheel weaves as the Wheel wills… It was a saying that Aes Sedai said often, but Marian supposed that she was becoming one too, so it was only fit for her to use it. Plus, it applied to the way things had worked out. Marian didn’t regret her decision to come to the White Tower, though it had been more of the Aes Sedai and her mother deciding for her. Marian had great plans for when she became Aes Sedai. One of the Accepted walked down the hall and gave her a look, raising her eyebrows and smiling. No doubt, it was probably amusing to see Marian emptying the chamber pots. Marian had never served chores as a punishment before. The girl, Amysta, was not her friend. None of the Accepted were really, except perhaps Mika, who had recently been raised. She hadn’t had a chance to see Mika lately, what with these chores… She hoped that she was doing well after the ter’angreal. Marian could recall a few times that Amysta had been in trouble. She recalled a specific time when Amysta had lured a Youngling into the Accepted hallways. Marian had to duck her head to cover a smile. The girl was surely going Green… Amysta gave her another look and then stalked off down the hall, probably guessing what Marian’s thoughts were. It was odd that Marian thought of Amysta as “girl.” Of course, Amysta had been a novice longer than Marian had, but they were the same age relatively. Amysta, however, had not acquired the sense of direction Marian felt that she had when she’d been raised. Marian wondered if Amysta would even make it to Aes Sedai… Marian, however, knew that she herself would. Emptying another pot, she sighed, looking down the hall. Only a few more rooms to go… Then she had some studying to do in the library. |

Splosh. It was quite a disgusting sound really… Marian wrinkled her nose at the smell as she started her days work of emptying the chamberpots again. Everyone else was at breakfast, but Marian figured she would eat later. By the time she was done, it would probably be lunch anyway. She had found that having an empty stomach during her punishment certainly helped her finish with ease. Marian thought to herself, Light, I can’t wait until I’m Aes Sedai. No one would make her do chores… Unless the Amyrlin Seat sent her for pennance. But that wasn’t the same. And Marian had never been punished until now, and she didn’t plan to be a rebellious Aes Sedai. Light – if she had wanted to be a rebel, she would be joining the Green Ajah. Her choice, however, lay within the Gray. She thought about that for a moment, moving on to the next room. She knocked first, before entering. The novices better not be in there rooms… She didn’t feel like being nice today. She wanted to finish her chores so she could continue her studying. If she wanted to be part of the Gray Ajah, to speak for the people who couldn’t speak themselves, then she needed to learn about people. Her current work was different types of language. It was interesting really, the way different people used common speech. It had led her into Daes Dae’mar… That made her head spin. Marian knew that she would never be able to manipulate the way the Cairhienin did, but she could certainly learn enough about it to keep herself safe. She planned on traveling someday. She had been to other countries before, as her mother had journeyed with her after she’d studied with her governess. However, it wasn’t the same to travel as the daughter of a noble lady compared to traveling as Aes Sedai. She smiled to herself – maybe she’d find a warder… The smile was wiped off her face as she dumped out another chamber pot. Disgusting. She knew perfectly well that she deserved punishment, but Light, it had to be chamber pots! Why couldn’t it be teakettles? She held the complaints silently, working without a word. Oh well. Someone had to do it. Might as well be Marian… There was a logic to the emptying of chamber pots. Someone had to do it. “You’re thinking like a White,” she muttered… Perhaps that had been why it was so difficult for Marian to choose an Ajah. She didn’t seem to have any of the distinguishing qualities that Aes Sedai of the Ajahs had. She could Heal, as it was one of her larger Talents, but Marian didn’t want to deal with sicknesses and injuries the rest of her life. It would be useful someday though… She thought about entering the Gray Ajah someday. She wondered what her friends would think of her then. Light, there was already a boundary between them since they were novices, and she was Accepted. She was thankful that Mika was Accepted now as well, though Marian still had not had a chance to talk to her. She figured that all her friends would be raised to Accepted before she was raised to Aes Sedai though. She sighed. She hoped some of them would be raised soon. Even in the past few years or so, she had not made many friends among the other Accepted. That was her fault, she supposed… She didn’t think that any of the Accepted disliked her. She hadn’t been mean to any of them… What would she do when they were all in different Ajahs? Light, she didn’t know if she’d be able to continue friendships then… She still saw Kathera every once and awhile… But as Aes Sedai, would there even be time for them to converse? She hoped so… She figured that the Aes Sedai world was probably much more complicated than it seemed, but she wouldn’t be able to know for sure until she actually became one. She contemplated what she would do in that world, among all those powerful women… She didn’t think she’d ever fit in there. Light. She couldn’t even be Accepted correctly… She was emptying chamber pots for the Light’s sake! |

Marian entered her punishment with considerable energy that morning. It was the last day of her punishment, the last day that she would be put off from her usual routine as Accepted. She’d have more time in the day that followed to work or study. She sighed with relief. Marian had already decided that she would not relax or visit the city of Tar Valon tomorrow. It would not be fitting for her to do such, after building so much character. She supposed that the Aes Sedai would not really mind, but it seemed like such a childish thing. She could handle the workload that she had been given. The punishment had been right, she reminded herself for the millionth time that month. She held her breath, emptying the first chamber pot into her bucket. Light, she would never have to do this again! She did not plan on getting in trouble before becoming Aes Sedai again, and as Aes Sedai, it would not be proper to make an Aes Sedai empty chamber pots. She did not plan on getting so involved in Daes Dae’mar that she had to involve herself in such activities. She had read about a Blue sister in a book who had done some daring deeds in order to plot the downfall of one of the nobles in Cairhien… It was quite interesting, but Marian was certainly not a plotter. She supposed that she would have to learn a bit of plotting if she planned to enter the Gray Ajah. Even if she did not do the plotting herself, people she dealt with, as a Gray sister, would be scheming themselves. She would have to learn to deal with such things. Now, at this time during her years as Accepted, Marian knew perfectly well that Aes Sedai were not the terrible monsters that some stories made them out to be. They were not the childish fantasies that young novices dreamt of at night. Aes Sedai did not swallow Shadowspawn whole, but they did not go out searching for the evils of the world to save everyone either. Some were legendary. Most were not. They were only Aes Sedai. Marian frowned and blinked at that, stopping her work. They are only Aes Sedai… she thought to herself again. Over the past few days, she had been thinking about what she would do as Aes Sedai. At first, she had had some great, noble plans, but she knew that they would never work. She supposed that she had reached that conclusion by this chore. Shaking her head, she emptied the next pot. Maybe the chore had been good for more than building character… Marian wondered if she’d be one of the well known Aes Sedai. She doubted it. It was rare that any Aes Sedai besides the Amyrlin Seat were known, unless they advised country rulers or something like that. Marian didn’t want to tie herself down with some ruler, though she planned to be involved in the world. She wondered if she’d end up bringing more novices to the White Tower. She planned to travel the world again… Thinking about trekking across the country though, she knew, looking around at the Tower around her that Tar Valon would remain her home. As she worked down the novice hallways, she remembered when she had been younger, always glad to see the Skylas estates. It had been her home, and Marian had never felt like she’d have another. However, since she had come to the White Tower, things had changed. Marian had made a whole new family here… Kathera, Shaya, Mika… All of them… Edeleas even… Her home was here now. She had grown into a young woman here. Marian had had so many memories in this place… Finally finishing the novice hallway, she began on the Accepted’s corridor. She had a past here. She had a present here. Marian knew she had a future in the Tower as well. As an Accepted, she was sealed to the Tower… she couldn’t just walk away from such a place. Smiling to herself as she emptied the chamber pots, she did it gladly and took comfort in the fact that she was part of a community here. Even with the punishment she was serving… Marian knew that she had entered a society. It was the White Tower. “Perhaps serving punishments aren’t so bad,” she said to herself. “Only a few more rooms to go…” ((OOC: I hope that’s what you meant, Cayana Sedai… If not, let me know. I’ll work on it some more.)) |
