Retired Gray Sister
|
Marian entered her room and very nearly slammed the door. Light! She couldn’t take this! Not so soon! She’d only just been raised to Aes Sedai, and now this… She fell backwards onto her bed, sighing deeply. It was too much stress, too much pressure. She couldn’t handle it now, and the Aes Sedai did not seem to be to help her. Light, what a tangled world I’ve entered… she thought to herself bitterly. It was worse than the Cairhienin nobles and their foolish Daes Dae’mar. The Aes Sedai had motives hidden down. No matter how Marian tried to reach them, she couldn’t. Light, what was she going to do? She sat up, realizing how childish she was acting. She straightened her shawl and her clothing neatly and rose. She began to pace. Marian knew that that too was childish, but she was in private… The former Head of the Gray Ajah Head had not been there to greet her when she became a full sister. That had been odd. Marian had learned the secrets of her Ajah, as well as the way to be resistant to temperatures. Light, that was a blessing. She had learned how the Aes Sedai were ranked by their strength in the One Power. That was fine, for Marian was already fairly strong in the power, rarely surpassed, at least by the initiates. Nevertheless, the Head of the Ajah had not been present. It had not been explained to her. It had not been explained until this night, and Marian couldn’t believe her ears… She remembered when the old woman had died, foolish thing she had been. Marian remembered the death of the sister, but Light, she hadn’t suspected that the woman had been the Head of the bloody Gray Ajah! Apparently the woman had thought more fondly of Marian than she had of her because the Aes Sedai had suggested that Marian take her place as the Head of Ajah. “Too much spiced wine for her,” Marian muttered in annoyance. She was hardly fit to be the Head of the Gray Ajah! She’d barely had a week of being Aes Sedai under her wings, much less… LIGHT! She groaned in frustration. Now, why the other Aes Sedai had gone along with it… She could have cursed. Marian knew their motives as well. They wanted to push her around. If the few high-ranking Aes Sedai of the Gray Ajah had a new, inexperienced sister as the Head of Ajah, they’d be able to manipulate the Gray any way they wanted to. “I didn’t join the Blue for a reason,” she muttered again to herself. “Bloody plotting…” That drone of curses went on for a moment. That was another good thing about being Aes Sedai – she didn’t have to restrain her tongue. Marian was sure, however, that her parents would be appalled if they heard her language. Marian hadn’t used curses when she had been living in Andor, but this seemed to be a fitting time. Marian knew perfectly well that they could do exactly as they planned to do. She was inexperienced. She was not fit to be the Head of Ajah. She would have no defense against them. “Light,” she muttered. “They’ll be looking to kill me off next…” She hadn’t had a choice. She’d had to accept it. Light, they hadn’t given her a choice! Even worse, now she was tied to the Tower. She couldn’t go out and be a voice for the people like she had wanted to. Now, she was stuck here, at the White Tower, being the bloody Head of Ajah for the Grays! “I knew I should have chosen Yellow.” She cursed quite foully again. How could they do this? This wasn’t fair! Marian hadn’t felt this type of anger in her heart for quite some time. It had been years since she had been this upset. Marian angry was quite a scary sight. “I’ll bloody show them,” she snapped to the empty room. “I’ll be the bloody Head of Ajah, and if they try to pull anything over… Their lives will be miserable!” The scary thing was, she actually meant those words. They wanted to get in her way? Let them try. With that, she took a breath, regaining Aes Sedai composure, straightened her shawl and glided out the door to check up in the library on Daes Dae’mar. |
