She still hates chores, but as Accepted, she takes pride in keeping herself and her room clean. Now that she is permitted to show more of herself, rather than studying all the time, she has taken on a more authoritative attitude, as she had as a lady in Amadicia. She has never been overly concerned with the well-being of people around her. She does, however, care about how others see her, and by association, the Towers. She does not well tolerate what she sees as disrespect, regardless of who offers it. She could still be said to be haughty, but does not consider herself better than others in the ways she used to. She pushes herself to succeed in her studies and in the Power, because she does not want others to look down upon her. She still has very few friends, but would now be open to a friendship, if one fell into her lap. She is intrigued by the Great Game, and wants to learn as much about it as she can. History: Adena was the daughter of a well-known Amadician lord, and well used to the life that gave her. Her father had always been more loyal to the Children of the Light than to the king, as all lords and ladies were. Adena's mother was a soft-spoken woman, but firm in her beliefs, which she passed on to her three children, Adena and her older brother and sister. Of course, Adena despised and feared anything even rumoring of the One Power, that was her mother's strongest conviction. The Power is evil. All her life, Adena had been told horrible stories about what the Aes Sedai had done over the ages, and her worst fear was meeting one of the witches. She knew she never would though, not as long as the Children remained strong in Amadicia, and no one was foolish enough to challenge them. As youngest daughter of a lord, Adena got what she wanted when she wanted it, and if she was denied it, everyone suffered. In a word, Adena was spoiled. What she had, she loved, what she did not have she loved even more. When she was a child she cried and screamed- sometimes for hours- so that she could get what she wanted. As she grew, she learned that being distant and disrespectful often worked much faster. At a young age, her mother taught her what her place in the world was. She was a lady, and must act as such. By the age of four, her curtsy was perfect. By seven, she could look down her nose and sniff at someone whose waist she did not reach. She thoroughly enjoyed her rank, and as she grew older, she only became more haughty. The servants in her father's house knew her temper could snap at the smallest imagined slight to her position, and always made sure to tread very softly around her. At about fourteen, something happened to change Adena's life forever. One of the servants failed to bow low enough for Adena's liking, and the next thing either of them knew, the man was bent trouble, howling in pain whenever he could find a breath. No one had been able to explain what happened, and the man was fine a few minutes later, so all was forgotten. A few days later, Adena fell deathly ill, the worst fever any of her household had ever experienced. They had been sure that she would not live more than a few days, but by the next morning Adena was in perfect health. Everyone was surprised, but relief outweighed any suspicious thoughts anyone may have had. Over the next few months, Adena fell ill a few more times, and each time was miraculously healed. After the second or third such sickness, Adena began to wonder what was wrong with herself, and began to search through her father's library for answers. She found nothing, though, and eventually the illnesses ceased, so Adena ended her search. As time went on, she noticed odd things happening when she was angry. By twenty, Adena- still unmarried -was surprised that no one had realized what was happening, then again, why would they think that, even she had been pushing an admonition away for six years, herself. After all, it was only when she was angry, and not all the time, and she had learned a slight control over her anger. It was not enough though, she knew she would have to leave. But how? She could not go to someone and tell them what she thought, that would be far too dangerous. She hated her very being because of what she suspected of herself. Night after night she woke crying, frightened and angry at herself. Time after time she considered throwing herself off a tower, but could never find the courage. She knew what she had to do, but feared that it would prove worse than suicide. The tales she had heard said that all Aes Sedai were evil, and Adena had no doubt that they were true, but also no doubt that no one else could help her. Late one night she crawled out of bed, still dressed, and gathered up a few of her things. As much as she hated to leave all her wonderful things behind, it had to be done. She gathered all her coin, then took some from her parents' apartments as well, and snuck out. She made her way to a nearby river and to a small town with a dock. Adena found a nice enough ship and hired a room in it. She could not tell the captain and crew where she was going, that would get her killed, so she said she was Raine, headed for Caemlyn. From there she could get a ship to Tar Valon, or a horse to take her there, preferably the former. Her weeks aboard that ship were uneventful, she mostly kept to herself, afraid to talk to crew or other passengers. She did make one friend among the crew though, and if not for that young man, Adena probably would have lost her nerve and run home- though it would more than likely mean her death. She did not tell him where she was truly going, he was still Amadician after all, but he was kind and talked to her when he could. Finally her ship arrived in Caemlyn, but Adena did not have enough money for another ship after a day in the city. She found a decent horse and bought some food and a blanket, and thanked the Light for her father's riches. Weeks on her horse, which she named Pansy, brought Adena to Tar Valon. She could not bring herself to go across the bridges though, so she wandered around one of the bridge towns that day, eating the last of the food she had bought in the last town. As dusk approached, she crossed one of the bridges and found an inn to stay at that night. She was too reluctant to enter the home of the Power-wielding witches that called themselves Aes Sedai. The next day she spent in the city, and the last of her coin. The city was beautiful, and she had to admit that the White Tower was the most beautiful building of all. She spent the day wandering from shop to shop, spending her last few coins on one or two purchases of fruit and a few ribbons for her hair. Mostly, she watched people, people from everywhere imaginable. Finally, dusk fell again, and again it brought dread. This time she went into the Tower just as the sun set. Once in the Tower, she was told by a servant woman in striped white that she could channel, and immediately taken to a woman called the Mistress of Novices. For twelve years, Adena wore novice white. For the first several years, she hated and grudged every minute. It left her drained and tired, and with absolutely no friends in the Towers. She did not mind. She believed that she was the only person in the Tower who was not a darkfriend, after all, how could anyone channel purposefully, and not have sold their soul to the Dark One? She disdained the peasant girls who were the other novices, feeling that they should all defer to her as both a lady, and someone older than most of them. She wanted nothing more than to learn how not to harm people, and then to get out of the Tower as fast as she could. At one point, she decided that she would not even wait that long, and would run away before her block was broken. As she tried, she was caught in the city by an Aes Sedai, whom she promptly punched in the nose. The attempt at running away, and physically harming a full sister earned Adena a huge punishment, which she thought she would never finish. Finally, it was done, and she went back to grimly looking forward to getting out- but she never again planned to run away. A few select conversations with other Tower initiates changed her life forever. One was one of the Accepted she had made quick enemies of when they were both novices, then a man- she was not sure whether he was a soldier or Dedicated -and then another of the Accepted. She would never have considered that three conversations could work together as they did to be so life changing. One forced her to admit that channeling was not the Dark One's mark, and that not all Aes Sedai were darkfriends. The next made her see that clinging to the past and shying from the future would do her no good. The final showed her that, just maybe, the Tower could be a place where she could find a purpose. The three together made her question almost every aspect of her life, and before she found all the answers she needed, her block was broken. Suddenly, a decision was closer than she wanted it to be, she put it off by asking around the Ajahs as she had promised that second Accepted she would do. Still, she did not know whether to stay or go when she was called to her raising. She accepted, and- somehow -made it through her arches, gaining her Great Serpent ring. Only a few years after Adena’s raising to Accepted, war broke out in the Westlands. There had been rumors before, but initiates were told little. The fact of war could not be hidden from them though, especially when Tar Valon itself came under siege. Aes Sedai and Asha’man were frequently out of the Towers, leaving a great deal of work for the Accepted. Aes Sedai who had previously helped lighten the load of novice classes were gone, and there were precious few sisters around to provide lessons for the Accepted. At least, while it was still possible to leave the Towers. Once the siege started, the Towers were more crowded than Adena remembered them ever being, but now time was spent trying to figure out what could be done to defeat the Forsaken and his army. This time of difficulty taught Adena that, under pressure, she could do what needed done. She became something of an unwilling leader for the other Accepted and helped remind them that they would be Aes Sedai one day, they needed to set a good example for the novices. She did not want to do it, but it was just so obvious that, despite years in the Tower, they had not completely left behind the farms and shops most of them came from. Adena had not entirely left behind the lady she had been, either. She knew that, like peasants looking to their lord, the novices would look to the Accpted during this time, and if the Accepted did not present a strong face, the novices would panic. Her peers listened to her, they looked to the sisters and found calm faces and realized that although they were all terrified, Adena was right. The women who had for so long thought that she was unworthy of the Great Serpent ring were finally beginning to accept her as one of them. Even so, Adena would never become a friendly woman. She did make a few friends, but her demeanor would never be that of someone who sought out or needed the approval of others. If that were the case, Adena did not think she would have made it through a single year as a novice. Finally, the war ended and although Adena did not know all the details, the important thing was that the Golden Alliance was defeated. Robert Laurel, a man she had met a few times, was proclaimed High King of a new empire, and the Amyrlin Seat- his wife! –was made High Queen. In the year since the end of the war, Adena has had her eye on the shawl. She has only been Accepted for seven years, but the war changed many things, and even the Towers need to flesh out their numbers again. She has learned a lot, and currently her efforts go into proving herself worthy of the shawl. She, like most Accepted, practice Aes Sedai calm and serenity at all times, and in her own opinion has improved greatly, though at times her temper still gets the better of her. Before the war, Adena worried that she would never find an Ajah to fit her. During the war, she realized that the only choice for her was Blue, it was a perfect match for her, and even if she was not yet quite sure what sort of change she wanted to make in the world, she knew that the independent lifestyle offered most readily by the Blue was something that she would need. She has not made her decision public knowledge- Accepted are not really supposed to announce their Ajah, after all –but she all but considers herself an apprentice of the Blues, looking forward to the day when she can wear the shawl and make everything official.
