History:

Tanya was born the daughter of a weaver and a mason in the southern city of Rampore, on the island of Seanchan. Neither of her parents where originally from the mainland, both her mother and her father refugees from the mainland. Her father, being a noble, was required to marry another noble, which he did. The woman he married was cold and vain and Tanya’s father Darren loved her not. On one of his hunting expeditions, he met Ingrid, a simple woman who had chosen a life of solitude away from civilisation. Darren then felt a feeling that he had rarely felt before. Love. He married her in a private chapel, and soon had impregnated her. Unfortunately, his first wife was not without her eyes and ears, and soon learned of this union. Afraid that Darren would supplant her with this new woman, she hired men to kill Ingrid before that could happen. Darren learned of this plot when it was almost to late and arrived at Ingrid’s cottage to find futilely fending off two hunters, a gaping wound already on her leg. Darren did away with the assassins, and made off with Ingrid, knowing that he couldn’t stay in his country anymore. Darren and Ingrid became stowaways on a boat and soon found themselves on the Island of Seanchan. They settled down in the town of Rampore where Darren took up masonry and Ingrid weaving. They had their child, Tanya, in peace, and in general, led a happy life.

During her childhood, Tanya never wanted for anything. Not saying that her parents where rich, only that Tanya had never wanted anything more than friendship, which she shared and received in abundance. She considered herself Seanchan through and through, fully integrated in their society since the Seanchan where willing to accommodate anyone in their land who was willing to abide by their laws, to be respectful to the blood and faithful to the Crystal Throne. Tanya did this willingly and consistently and spent most of her childhood playing with other girls of her age. She was content that she was not born to a noble family since she knew that the pattern had a place for everyone and that they must find their place despite their social standing. As she grew older and reached her twelfth nameday, she found herself spending less time with her friends and more with her mother in their shop. Her mother had never truly recovered from the attempt on her life and always walked with a limp. When Tanya was fourteen, city life was too much for her poor mother and so they sold their shops and their home and moved more north to the village of Qirat. It was there that Tanya met the local blacksmiths apprentice and son, Kamiel. She admired how his lean form moved around the smithy, manipulating the fire and the metals with ease. She’d spend her days watching him work, sighing to herself as his muscles flexed as he pounded away on the anvil. She was no longer needed as much in her mothers’ store since she was able to become more independent now that she was away from the bustling city. In the evening Tanya and Kamiel would go out for walks along the nearby river and through the forest, admiring the setting sun reflecting colours across the sky, mirrored in the water. Tanya loved Kamiel with all her heart and soul, and was positive that they would one day exchange their vows and be joined in marriage. This unfortunately changed one fateful day during Tanya’s sixteenth summer. The Suldam had come back again for their yearly testing, to see if there where any marath’damane. Tanya was unworried as she lined up with the rest of the girls from the village. She hadn’t had the spark last year and she couldn’t channel anymore than she could then, so damane where of no concern to her. When it was finally her turn to try on the a’dam, the Suldam who had the other half of the a’dam, turned to the first Suldam and murmured, “It is strong with this one”. As Tanya walked toward the cart, where the Suldam’s guards waited Kamiel ran up to her, “What’s happened?” he asked. Tanya slowly turned to face him, her eyes brimming with tears, “I am damane now”. Realisation slowly dawned upon Kamiel as he noticed the implications of that. “Run away Tanya!” he cried. “I’ll create a distraction and we’ll leave this place forever.” Tanya almost agreed, but then realised that that would mean she’d be outcast from society such as her parents had once been. In frustration of her situation, she slapped him. Hard. “You fool!” she whispered, her voice dangerous. “The pattern has a place for everyone and my place is readily apparent. I must accept my fate.” As Kamiel turned, tears filling his own eyes, Tanya grabbed him by the hair. “Kamiel, they’ve already taken my name. I am now the damane Anna. Remember me Kamiel. Remember me for who I was, not the outcast that I am now. Remember Tanya.” With that she kissed him full on the lips. Two guards came and held onto Kamiel as she was pulled away and thrown in the cart. As the cart drove away creaking into the distance with Tanya and the Der’Suldam, a rain a started to fall as Tanya watched the man she loved fade into the distance.

Tanya’s training as damane began as soon as the Sul’dam rejoined her in the cart. The one wearing the bracelet introduced herself as Brina and the other as Taylor. Ever since the rising of the Dragon Rand Al’Thor, the Seanchan began using some a’dam that they acquired that did not have a leash attached. Brina demonstrated the various abilities of the a’dam, inflicting harsh pains on Tanya. Sobbing, Tanya curled in a ball, trying to ignore the pain, but Brina only increased it saying “if I require to hurt you like this, it is because you have displeased me. If I ever do this to you, you must thank me and ask for more”. Grasping Tanya’s chin she continued, “ You are a servant now, no, a piece of property. You will be tamed, like a wild beast, and your goal in life from now on is to please me. You will be taught to channel, and if you please me, I shall reward you, if you don’t, then more of this” she said, causing a burning sensation to occur in Tanya’s stomach. “Thank you mistress” said Tanya weakly. “You learn well”, Brina said smiling to herself. “Your name has been good for the past, but a new name is always good for braking strong will. You shall now be called Anna. When we reach the capital, your real training will begin”

When they arrived in the capital, Tanya was placed in a kennel with another damane, one who was older and more experienced. Tanya worked day in and day out trying to please her Sul’dam. She quickly learned to embrace the source and channel. After basic channelling was accomplished under Brina’s supervision, Tanya was tested for skills which would be beneficial to the Ever Victorious Army. While she had no talent what so-ever in finding ores in the ground, she had a knack for blowing things up and causing destruction. First she started with blowing up simple pottery and then slowly progressing to larger objects; boulders, trees and even ships! She was also extremely talented in manipulating air and water weaves. Since she had almost no ability at all in earth or spirit, her training in those aspects was neglected, so that she could be most useful in the fields she was talented in as soon as readily possible.

When Tanya was twenty-one, her Sul’dam Brina was in charge of an expedition into the blight. Tanya led a circle of thirteen other damane to eradicate a large force of shadowspawn in the Seanchan blight, along with a company of morat’torm. Having lost two damane that day, the Seanchan realised that damane needed to be able to defend themselves if they where in a link or if they became shielded, something they learned to there dismay during the return. It was at that point of time that Tanya began receiving training in the Seanchan form of martial arts along with the other damane. Most where extremely clumsy at it, although Tanya picked it up fairly quickly. Learning was the only thing of joy left in her life. She loved her Sul’dam Brina and was eager to please her, firmly established as property of the Seanchan and resigned to her captivity.

At the age of twenty-two, Tanya along with the Sul’dam Brina and Taylor where sent on a mission. They were to go to the mainland and scout out the possibilities of another return. So with their mission outlined, they where sent on a non-descript boat toward the mainland. During the voyage, a horrible storm struck. As the boat fell apart around her, Tanya could have sworn that she had heard Kamiel calling her. Tanya and the two Sul’dam managed to stay together on a floating piece of deck. A giant wave crested over them, breaking up their refuge, sending flying in the sea. Tanya thankfully lost consciousness almost immediately.

Tanya awoke with a searing pain in her chest and noticed that it didn’t originate from her, but from Brina who was kneeling next to her, a piece of wood speared through her middle. The a’dam conveyed all the pain that Brina was failing twice over to Tanya, making Tanya shriek from the pain. As Tanya started to throw up on her sodden grey damane dress, a man was there, telling Taylor to take the damane off. She felt cold hand fumble around her neck and suddenly the pain was gone. Still, the memory of that pain was too much for Tanya, again, she blacked out. She awoke to find Kamiel sleeping next to her. He looked six years older, just like she would to him, but it was Kamiel nonetheless. All of a sudden he stirred, and yawning stood up. Tears of joy sprang to Tanya’s eyes for seeing him again. Kamiel”, she said, “it really is you”. It was then that she that she noticed Brina’s dead body. “Brina’s dead Kamiel! She was so kind to me”. “Brina’s DEAD, Kamiel! Tanya yelled gesturing to the dead Sul’dam. Her eyes where bright red, welling with tears. Kamiel had his arms around her waist, but she ignored that, slamming her fists into his chest, making him grunt. She grabbed Kamiel’s shirt crying uncontrollably and yelling, her neck feeling bare without the A’dam. Despite her tear stained face and ripped grey dress, Kamiel gently tilted her head towards him. “I’ve missed you” he told her simply and kissed her full on the mouth, taking her breath away. Tanya looked in his eyes and asked “what do we do know with our lives? Where are we? The blood and the seekers will surely have us killed after what’s happened! I need a Sul’dam, I am property. I can’t be uncollared! Kamiel answered, “We are far from Seanchan. There are no Sul’dam here. We should go on now towards Tar Valon, it is a place where we can be safe from the world.” Tanya had never heard of Tar Valon before, living most of her life in Seanchan, but Kamiel was quick to explain. “It’s a place for channelers”, he said. Tanya nodded slowly, imagining how they’d place the collar around her neck again to serve their own ends. I might as well bring the bracelet and collar from my a’dam, Tanya thought to herself. After all, they are hard to come by in this form with no leash. Following Kamiel slowly, Tanya felt around her neck and gulped again a the necklace that wasn’t there. She was prepared to be collared again just as soon as she arrived at this Tar Valon

I like it, for the most part, I just have one minor problem. After so many years as damane, it's very unlikely that Tanya would have any desire whatsoever to be free. The sul'dam brainwash their damane and as we've seen from the books, a good 99.9% of them want only to be leashed again after they're freed. I do like that Tanya takes the a'dam with her to the Tower, it shows how they changed the way she thought. :)
