Asha'man, Chancellor of the Exchequer

Name: Remeian Maran
Age: 117
Nationality: Altaran (Ebou Dari)
Height: 6’ 1’’ (186 cm)
Weight: 154 lbs (69 kilos)
Hair color/length: Long, dark brown, tangled
Eye color: brown
A quick overview of personality: Remeian is a calm and very polite man. He is good at politics and understands different social structures well and behaves accordingly, although he does tend to be a touch too courteous. He does not believe in violence and always defends himself and disarms the opponent without giving them a strike if possible. He still carries a curved dueling dagger safely tucked at his belt, the only visible reminder of his Ebou Dari roots, even though he never duels anymore. Due to his youth among aggressive Ebou Dari women, he is always cautious and polite around women and tends to avoid them a bit. He is not a very talkative or emotional person by nature and he tries to think things through logically and rationally.

History:

Remeian was the second-born son of Mayana and Rein Joronin of House Joronin. House Joronin was a minor Ebou Dari House and Rein was heir to the High Seat. Mayana was a true noble too; her father was the High Seat of House Maran. House Maran was a moderately large but still a minor House that nevertheless strived for the Throne.

Mayana married early and gave birth to her first son, Moinar, at the age of seventeen, and a year later to Remeian. But when Remeian was still an infant, Rein died in a duel. Mayana put her Marriage Knife into a blue sheath and returned to House Maran. She soon found a new suitor and married Gaidofer Maran, her distant cousin of House Manar. Mayana’s father died, and her three brothers fought for the title of High Seat until Rome, the eldest brother, finally succeeded, but only after killing his youngest brother in a duel. It had been the High Seat’s deepest desire to once sit on the Throne of Winds, and Rome decided to pursue his father’s dream.

Rome was five years older than Mayana and married, but childless. It seemed that either Moinar or Remeian would most likely succeed him, even though they were practically of House Joronin. So Mayana and Gaidofer raised them with that in their minds. The boys’ early childhood was regulated by nannies, but when Moinar turned five and Remeian four, it was time to start their education. They were taught everything a noble in Altara needed to know: dueling, politics, manners, history, horse-back riding, government, commerce… Meanwhile, Rome desperately tried to make House Maran stronger and his remaining brother was killed in a duel. Mayana and Gaidofer had a daughter, Laianna, and two years later another daughter was born prematurely and died. Mayana was not able to carry another child.

Moinar grew and became a fine Ebou Dari man with the appropriate manners, ferociousness and dueling skills for a young Altaran. He fought his first duel at the age of fourteen and participated in duels almost daily ever since. Remeian, however… He was a charming young man, always polite and respectful, but he seemed to ignore insults and avoid duels. At the age of fifteen his first duel was yet to come. He also spent most of his time indoors, reading or practicing with his dagger or learning mathematics. He was seldom found wandering the streets of Ebou Dar, which was part of the reason why he hadn’t been challenged yet. Laianna at the age of ten was a beautiful little girl with an even fiercer spirit than Moiran. Nevertheless she was a lot closer to Remeian than she was to Moiran, who seemed to care more about dueling and women than about his family.

It seemed evident that Moiran would become High Seat if Remeian didn’t start showing a bit more tact and courage. Nevertheless, Rome took an interest in Remeian when he started showing a deep understanding of mathematics and politics. Remeian became Rome’s unofficial secretary who dealt with his paperwork and the running of his estates, under Rome’s supervision of course. But his sixteenth birthday was coming and he had still not fought in a duel. He reluctantly left the safety of the house and ambled the streets of Ebou Dar, where it did not take him long to get challenged. Remeian had been trained by Rome and Gaidofer, who both had lived relatively long and won numerous duels, so he won the duel, and credibility. A week later he turned sixteen.

He continued his work with Rome, but he remained a source of awkwardness among the House. Remeian did not enjoy dueling nor was he prone to challenge people. He only fought when challenged, but he won every time. He had gathered a few scars that added a bit to his image, but he was still silently considered a coward. But he was a lot more competent in running the House than Moiran, or even Rome, so they could not afford to lose him. Rome and Mayana’s intention was that some day Moiran would be the official High Seat, but Remeian would do the actual governing. But only if Remeian didn’t bring shame to the family by refusing duels or ignoring obvious insults.

Remeian knew what was expected of him, but he just couldn’t make himself challenge people to a duel and possibly end their lives for stupid and petty reasons. He saw no sense in the whole deal, but he felt obligated to duel if someone was stupid enough to challenge him. Moiran was happy dueling with anyone who crossed his path, mostly because of women. Remeian on the other hand was slightly afraid of the fierce Ebou Dari women who would not hesitate to kill a man who displeased them. Even Laianna scared him sometimes, and she wasn’t even old enough to duel. So he was always as polite as possible to avoid unnecessary conflicts and duels.

But Remeian was a fairly attractive young man and there were many minor noblewomen and even middle-classed women who tried their luck with him. Remeian was shocked by their willingness to duel over him, and he had no choice but go with the winner, whoever it might be. He bought no one a choker though, and very politely indicated that he did not intend to marry.

When he turned nineteen, things seemed to brighten up for him. He met his first love, Nicarla, a nineteen-year-old middle-classed woman. It was love at first sight. Nicarla was a mild-mannered, hardworking young woman who had only fought two duels in her entire life. She wasn’t pushy or arrogant like most Ebou Dari women seemed to be. Nicarla’s parents were on the verge of disowning her, but as soon as they heard that Remeian had taken an interest in her, they were suddenly very proud of their daughter. Remeian’s parents, however, were not at all pleased. Not only was Nicarla a commoner, she was also an obvious coward. So when Remeian bought Nicarla a choker despite his parent’s objections a year after they had met, Rome and Mayana had to seriously reconsider Remeian’s role in their House and even think about disowning him.

They found an answer to their dilemma soon. An Asha’man had tested Remeian and announced that he could channel and should travel to the Black Tower immediately. Remeian’s parents sent him off as soon as possible. That way Remeian would not be able to marry Nicarla and shame the family, nor would his parents have to disown him. And it would give House Maran some prestige, having a future Asha’man as a Lord.

So Remeian left, promising Nicarla that he would return and buy her a Marriage Knife as soon as his training was over. But he soon discovered that that would not happen as soon as he had thought. Clad in Soldier black, he was a quick learner in ordinary subjects but it took him long to learn even the simplest weaves. He also disliked chores and strict regulations, but he soon overcame that. He made a fine Soldier with his already polite and respectful attitude, and he never engaged in duels now that he didn’t have to. Once he got over his initial shock, he grew to love the Black Tower with its countless opportunities. Becoming Asha’man seemed a far more attractive future than becoming an accountant for an Ebou Dari High Seat. He only missed Nicarla and Laianna. Nevertheless, it took him seventeen long years to be raised to Dedicated.

The Three Arches were a fearsome event which forced Remeian to face his family and Nicarla. But he succeeded and was raised, and finally understood that he would never be able to marry Nicarla. He did keep in touch with his family, if only distantly, and learned that Moiran had indeed succeeded Rome and Lianna was happily married. Nicarla was still waiting for him, but Remeian advised her to forget about him and marry someone else.

During his years as Dedicated his channeling improved remarkably and he started to learn faster. He mastered his Talents quite quickly and was able to weave more and more complex weaves. He continued his other studies and took an interest in geography and different nations now that he was sure that he would never return to Ebou Dar. His interest in politics remained, and he was still formally a lord of House Maran. But he did not miss Ebou Dar and its violent customs. After fourteen more years of training, Remeian was raised an Asha’man and he chose the Shen al'N'dore al'Mordero.

Remeian still felt ineffective in the One Power, so he practiced mostly defensive weaves dutifully while he started his duties as an Asha’man. He turned out to be a good negotiator and wonderful in organizing. He was good at making himself invisible with his Talent, Folding the Light, and had the ability to make Stretching Shields that were impossible to break. He was a good Healer, though not exactly strong. He engaged himself in politics but unconsciously steered clear of all things that had to do with Altara.

But he kept getting news of his family. Laianna wrote to him regularly, praying him to pay her a visit. Remeian answered all her letters but avoided the meeting because he knew that his parents expected him to return home. After ten years as an Asha’man he decided that he needed to face his family. Gaidofer had deceased two years ago and Laianna was a widow with three full-grown children when Remeian finally made the visit. Mayana greeted her son happily, and Moiran with his wife and five sons and two granddaughters were delighted to meet him. But Remeian had lived in the Black Tower for over forty years and felt like an intruder in his old home. He spent a week with his relatives and returned to the Black Tower with Moiran’s youngest son, Karelles, who had the ability to channel.

Years went by and one by one Remeian’s family members died until the only link to Remeian’s old life was Karelles, who spent fifteen years in Soldier black until he faced the Arches. And he never returned from the third Arch. Remeian was perfectly happy as an Asha’man, but after Karelles’s death Remeian was totally free of his youth and old life and could enjoy being Asha’man without a touch of guilt and worry.

He continued involving himself in politics and became respected in his Shen. It was said that had he been stronger in the One Power, he could have been appointed Rei. His skills were noted in a different way, and he was offered the position of the Master of Soldiers. And he agreed.

He was excited at first, but he soon realised that the position was not for him. He liked the paperwork, as always, he loved organizing classes and rooms and almost everything the job entailed. Almost. He disliked punishments, and he hated violence. So he considered very carefully before exercising a physical punishment. And he was no leader, he never had been. Soon he saw that it would cost him. At first the Soldiers and Dedicated behaved very nicely, never really challenging him. But then the war started. The Black Tower was more or less in turmoil, but Soldiers needed to be taught, and Dedicated had to teach them now that most Asha'man were out and about. And Remeian had to do his best in the Infirmary, he was a Healer after all. The Dedicated became restless and frustrated, the Soldiers started to stretch their limits. Remeian did not have the will or the energy to do what the situation required of him. After the opposing armies broke into Tar Valon and were eventually pushed back, he resigned. He was needed in the Infirmary, so no one opposed too much. Remeian sighed in relief.

Finally the war was over and the High Kingdom was born. And suddenly Remeian was appointed the Chancellor of the Exchequer. He had the finances of a whole empire in his hands. He jumped at the chance and began his new job.
