Aes Sedai of the Green Ajah, Lost during the War
(OOC: It's alright, mine take a while too. :) )

Adena did not seem unhappy to hear those questions, even though she must have heard them before. Farina was sure that she was not the only curious one, because the girls with a block were a rarity. Farina had never had a girl with a block in any of her novice channeling classes. But when Adena answered that she could see the threads and learn the theory regardless, Farina was not so sure about that anymore. Who knew, there could have been girls with blocks in her classes, she just hadn't been told and hadn't noticed. When Adena went on that as long as she was sufficiently angry, she could learn as well as the others, Farina was even more impressed. That meant that some girls with blocks could learn how to channel along with the 'normal' novices and no one would even notice. Adena did mention about the leeway some teachers gave her, but Farina found it hard to imagine an Aes Sedai who would give such leeway that others would notice. Aes Sedai seldom listened to excuses, even real and tangible ones.

But it couldn't be that easy for all of them, Farina figured. If the block was known and the woman found it easy to achieve those conditions when she could channel, there was no reason why they couldn't attend classes. But if the block was harder, those conditions would be harder to simulate. Like... Farina had heard of blocks that allowed the person to channel only when they were utterly scared for their life. That would be a hard emotion to achieve in a classroom. Farina was sure that there were more of these possible hard blocks, so those girls would probably have to wait until the block was broken before they could learn to channel at all. Now that would be a terrible faith. Living in the White Tower for years, doing chores and attending classes, but not being able to learn how to channel...

Adena's last comment did not sound good to Farina, though. But they had discussed that subject already, and Farina saw no reason why they should do so again. Farina had given Adena her views on the matter, and she hoped that Adena would remember Farina's suggestion of getting to know the Ajahs first. But what if her block was broken tomorrow? Would she leave as soon as the Aes Sedai let her, or would she stay to study the Ajahs regardless? That was not a decision Farina could make for Adena, she would have to decide herself. Farina hoped that she wouldn't just dash off.

"Have you learned your Talents yet?" was Farina's next question. Those were another thing that could help Adena to decide to stay. If she found a suitable purpose and her Talents suited that purpose, she could decide to stay in the Tower and explore her potential. Farina did not say that out loud, though, but waited for Adena's answer.

Farina was thoughtful for a moment as she seemed to reflect on everything Adena had said. Thankfully, she did not seem upset about Adena's comment about leaving. Instead, she took the conversation in a different direction, asking whether Adena knew her Talents yet. "I haven't found them yet, right now everyone's attention is more focused on breaking my block." As it had been for a long time. Sometimes Adena wondered if other girls ever went so long with a block. Did it frustrate the Aes Sedai as much as it did her that they could not find the answer? Those women who it seemed had the answers for everything could not break her block. It was rather disheartening, but Adena did somewhat enjoy that they were reminded that they were real people, not perfect, and not with all the answers, even if only a little bit. Of course, Adena had no way of knowing if that was actually how the Aes Sedai felt. Perhaps they did not care if Adena's block was ever broken. Maybe they were purposely taking a long time breaking her block so that they could break her down as well, so that she would finally decide that she wanted to become Aes Sedai. That thought had never occured to Adena before, but she did not really think it was credible anyway. Even if Adena could control the Power, a block made things more dangerous than need be. The Power was dangerous for novices even without a block, why would they add the ability to channel unpredictably? Regardless of how much they wanted Adena to stay in the Tower, they would not want her to burn herself out, that would not benefit anyone.

"How did you discover your Talents?" Adena asked. She knew what Talents were of course, but she had no idea how most people discovered them, or really how they even knew it was a Talent, and not just a weave with which they had skill. She had probably learned it all in one of her novice classes, but she hardly remembered everything from every class she had taken. "I mean, what signified to you that it was a Talent?" She supposed most people discovered them in training, when they were attempting many different kinds of weaves daily. Surely though some people had Talents that were not taught in classes. Like forms of Compulsion, she knew that many girls who began channeling outside of the Tower learned a form of Compulsion, and probably a few girls had Talents for it, but it was certainly not taught in any novice class. So some women could perhaps even be Aes Sedai for years before they knew all of their Talents. Would that be something of a shock for those women? How would they discover those Talents anyway? Adena knew there were many weaves and things that were taught only to Aes Sedai, so she supposed some could be discovered then. But after that, it seemed to Adena that a woman would have to be attempting forbidden or at least frowned-upon weaves in order to discover such a Talent. Of course, there were some Talents that did not require the use of the Power. Seeing ta'veren, for example, was one that did not involve any weaves, but was certainly a Talent. If someone did not meet a ta'veren until late in his or her life, they would of course not discover such a Talent until then- if ever. Perhaps some Talents developed later as well.

Adena did not think she had ever thought so much about Talents in her life. It was not something she had ever worried about, breaking her block was always at the forefront of her mind as far as channeling was concerned. Now that Farina had mentioned it, Adena wondered what her Talents would be. She had done plenty of channeling, but perhaps her block got in the way when it came to learning Talents. Maybe the day when the other novices were learning the weaves for one of her Talents, she could not channel. She suppressed a sigh, this stupid block got in the way of every part of her life. Even in the Tower, surrounded by others who could channel, she was still something of an outcast. Of course, Adena could not claim that that was entirely because of her block, but the block did mean that she did often have difficulties learning to channel. Not that she had lied when she told Farina that she could channel as well as any novice. She could- after twelve years, even with a block she should certainly be able to. Even so, things would be easier when the block was broken. Why does that matter? I'll be gone then, won't I? No, it did not matter how things would be when she broke her block. She would not be around long after that. Still, the fact that the thought had crept into her mind stunned her. Where had that thought come from? True, she had changed a lot in the past few years, but she did not realize she had changed that much. Light, that was something of a frightening thought. She focused back on Farina and pushed those dangerous thoughts out of her head, waiting for the woman's answer.

Aes Sedai of the Green Ajah, Lost during the War
Farina was a little disappointed, but not surprised to hear that Adena had not discovered her Talents. From what Farina had heard, novices seldom discovered their Talents because most of the more unordinary weaves were not taught to novices; some not even to Accepted. Farina was lucky that her own Talents were quite ordinary and based on weaves that were taught to every girl. Some Talents were not taught at all and some did not even require active channeling. Those were Talents that people had to discover by themselves, and there was never a guarantee of when that would happen - maybe never. Farina wondered how many Aes Sedai and Asha'man had undiscovered Talents, great potential that they had not yet leashed. At least Farina was sure of her own potential and could train all her assets to the fullest.

Then Adena asked Farina how she had discovered her Talents. Farina was delighted; it showed that Adena indeed was interested in Talents and hopefully interested in finding her own. Or she was just being polite. Farina shook the thought, whatever the reason for Adena asking that question, she was glad to answer. Not that her Talents were too exciting. Farina had been a little disappointed to discover them; she had secretly hoped for Earth Singing or Dreaming or Spinning Earthfire. Well, Cloud Dancing could be very useful and harmful to the enemy, Keeping was extremely useful in camp conditions and a Healer in the battlefield was worth gold, but still... Farina would have to work with what she got and not sigh over things she couldn't have.

"I found about Keeping when I was a novice," she began. "Well, actually, the Aes Sedai realized it was my Talent long after I had been raised to Accepted because I'm not too good at it, but I learned the weave as a novice." She still hadn't quite perfected Keeping. It was boring. "The Yellows started showing special interest in me a few years after I had been raised to Accepted. Once they started offering me private lessons, I was sure that I had a Talent for Healing." They still offered her private lessons in hopes that she would choose the Yellow after all even though she had made it all but clear that she would choose the Green. She was sure that the Yellows would not give in until she had the green-fringed shawl on her shoulders. Which should not take too long. Light, let it be so.

"Cloud Dancing was a bit trickier. We were taught forming rain clouds and all in our novice lessons, and some wind manipulation as Accepted, but I didn't discover that it was my Talent until I started practicing it on my own. Now I could summon a huge storm in just a few seconds," she said a tag too smugly. She had to be proud of it, it was her only somewhat destructive Talent. "Not that I've had many chances to try," she finished dryly. She had been allowed out of the Tower with an Aes Sedai to practice some serious Cloud Dancing only twice!

The chimes of the bell brought Farina back to reality. She had a private tutoring lesson with Asalin Sedai, and she did not tolerate unpunctuality. "I'm sorry, I really need to rush. I didn't notice it was so late!" she said quickly and picked up her book. "It was really nice talking to you, Adena, and I hope that we'll have a chance to talk again soon. Please keep in mind what I said about getting to know the Ajahs." With that, she rushed off, her face a calm and cool mask of serenity but her cheeks blushing and her feet moving very close to running.

Adena listened closely as Farina explained how she had discovered her own Talents. Mostly just in classes and things, seemingly by chance. Perhaps Adena was behind then, if she had not discovered any Talents yet. Of course, first was the block. Then maybe Talents. If I decide to stay here, she reminded herself rather harshly. She still planned to leave. Nothing had changed that, even if she had promised Farina that she would study the Ajahs at least briefly. If she left the Tower there was no need for her to discover her Talents. Probably better if she did not, that way she would have one less thing tying her to this place. Farina seemed to be the most proud of her abilities in Cloud Dancing, though she said she had not had much opportunity to use it. Being able to call up a storm in but a few moments might come in useful somtimes, but the ability to control the weather in general could definitely be handy, whether for self defense or something else. Perhaps that was one of Adena's Talents. Or hopefully her Talents would prove to be at least as handy as Cloud Dancing. Who says I'm even going to figure out what my Talents are? she reminded herself, more harshly than before. She had to stop thinking those sorts of things if she was to have any hope of leaving this place. All it would take was one thing that kept her around, and then they would have her forever, there would be no getting out then.

Before Adena had any chance to say anything back about Farina's Talents, the bells were chiming, and Farina was jumping from her seat as quickly as Adena. She had a class, and it was starting right now. Blood and ashes! she swore, carefully keeping it mental. Farina might be a kind woman, but she would probably still send a novice to punishment for swearing. But the Accepted seemed as distracted as Adena, saying that she did not realize how late it was and she had to go. Before Adena even had a chance to reply, Farina had spun and was off almost at a run. Accepted were held to the same standards of punctuality that novices were, though being a little late probably only earned them an admonition, rather than the punishment a novice would get. The punishment Adena was going to get for being late to that class. The knowledge that she was already in for a punishment did not slow her steps though, the later she was, the worse the punishment would be. She sped through the library and then the grounds the same way Farina had- just short of running. Really, she was going fast enough that a passing sister would probably tell her to slow down, but at the moment there were no sisters in sight. So Adena kept to her pace, praying that something might happen to make the Accepted teaching her ter'angreal class late or extremely lenient, but at the same time knowing it would not happen.

((OOC: This will save Adena from getting a punishment, and also give her a real chance to emote too!!))

Erin paused for a moment in her trip back to her suite in the Barracks. She had been practicing hard in the days since Kiren's murder, trying to get herself back into prime fighting form. But she was pushing fifty now, and the body just didn't bounce back the way it used to. The only way to solve that was for her to become bonded as a warder, but that didn't seem very likely. She was dressed in gaidin black today, the way she had been dressing since she had determined upon the course she was going to take. She was in full armor, getting used to the weight again and with her longsword at her waist. She saw more gray streaks in the mirror these days.

She and Siobhan were waiting for Rialt to decide what he wanted to do, and how to use the Guard's Scout Company. She smiled grimly to herself. That organization was really the size of a small battalion, and it was Robert's very own collection of dirty tricksters, thieves, pickpockets, whores, assassins and all around ne'er-do-wells. Their one saving grace was that they were very, very good at what they did, and they had agreed not to exercise their talents except at his direction.

She knew her brother was upset with her for embarking on this quest for revenge, but he hadn't tried to stop her either. They both had loved Kiren dearly as a friend, and since he couldn't go off haring on is own, he was content that his sibling could get the job done for him. The representatives of the southern nations were due in Tar Valon in the next few days to present what would undoubtedly be an ultimatum. Erin had no doubt that the terms would be unacceptable, and upon Tar Valon's rejection of the terms, they would be at war. She knew that Robert would want her to assume his duties as military governor of Tar Valon when the war started, but that would just have to wait.

Erin looked up, and saw Adena hurrying across the grounds, probably late to a class. She probably didn't know what was going on in the outside world, novices and accepted were kept pretty isolated from happenings outside. Erin had been working closely with the girl and had been pleased with her work, and had been glad to see her finally progress through her Arches to become an Accepted. She supposed that someone should tell Adena what was about to happen. It was only right, considering that her father and many of her relatives would be involved on the other side.

She called out, and the girl turned her head. "I need to talk with you, child," she said. "I'll make your excuses to your instructor." She saw the look of relief quickly pass over Adena's face. "Sit with me, Adena," she said, motioning to a convenient bench. She watched as the young woman sat. She was already beginning to develop something of the aes sedai look, that look of ageless serenity that was their usual expression.

"I'm afraid I have some bad news for you, child," she began, and then cursed herself for her clumsiness. The girl's eyes widened, and she nodded anxiously for Erin to continue. "You may have heard that there have been quarrels in the south. Those quarrels have spread north, and Tar Valon has gotten involved. Emissaries from the southern nations are due to arrive sometime this week. Diplomats from Amadacia are among them. We expect them to be delivering a declaration of war."

I will, I haven't forgotten, but I have to keep up with school first, unfortunately. That, combined with the power being out for two days has pushed some things back.
