The purpose of the Shen is to further Rand al’Thor’s combining of the White and Black Towers. In a move to allow male and female channelers the chance to find commonalities between eachother, the first M’Hael Logain Ablar created factions within the Black Tower to give a more specific purpose to the men. The Black Tower’s origins came when Rand al’Thor created the tower in order to have an army of male channelers to use against the Dark One in the Last Battle. When Rand left this world behind and disappeared within the Portal Stone to fight the Last Battle, the amount of Asha’man who went with him was unknown, however it was significant. With so many loyalties being questioned after their leader left, Logain (after having defeated Mazrim Taim for the role of M’Hael) fused with the Amyrlin and brought before her his idea to create factions within the Tower for a variety of reasons. One of the most important was to aid the White Tower in their pursuits, and vice versa. The most important creation was of course the Red Shen, an idea stemming from the bonding of Aes Sedai and Asha’man of that time, whether forced or not. Those who desired to have their bonds dissolved, did so. Many of these men and women wished to continue the bond in another way that would benefit the Towers as well as the common purpose of the Towers; to maintain order. Because the numbers of the Asha’man were not great, he decided to break the remaining Asha’man into three Shen’s with three distinct purposes thereby giving men the opportunity to share in personalities/ideas/gifts. These were chartered by Logain Ablar himself and their purposes may only be changed with the express permission of the M’Hael and a 2/3’s vote within the Shen’s members. Shen Descriptions: Shen al'Aman Val - The Dragon Guard This faction shall consist of an evenly distributed balance of fighter and channeler for the purpose of combat operations in the army that Rand al’Thor desired. These men operate as compassionate individuals for the common man, and shall hold a high degree of intelligence. They are the men who advise rulers, draft treaties, and engage in justice for the masses. They run the wars within the Black Tower in close conjunction with the Garrison. They guard the aims of society within “Randland”, but also double as an effective group of men dedicated to preserving the Black Tower in combat. They are sometimes jokingly referred to as the politicians of the Black Tower, when in all actuality this comprises only a part of their aims. All of the M’Hael’s except for Zekeial al’Kith and Rialt Erydinan were Aman Val, a strange anomaly. The sometimes serve as recruiters. Colors: dark green and dark red Shen al'N'Dore al'Mordero - Dancers of Death This faction shall consist of healers both using and not using Saidin, although this skill is desired it is not required. All of the most talented healers in the Black Tower are of this Shen, and a large amount of apothecaries reside within the N’Dore. Modeling the Green Ajah, the N’Dore men are committed fighters both on a battlefield, and covertly. It is commonly known that the N’Dore are often secretive of their true aims because they operate furtively for the sake of both Towers. For this reason they sometimes pose as Aman Val when on public missions. They take on extremely dangerous missions and are also known for their ability to make their way through battlefields practically undetected. Generally have the second highest hatred of Darkfriends, right behind the Red Shen. They are often trainers for the Dedicated and Soldiers, and in conjunction with the Gaidin of the tower, teach physical self-defense. Most have a specialization of some kind that benefits the towers or those outside of it. Aside from their battle oriented disposition, these men are skilled in a variety of things. They are sometimes jokingly referred to as jack-of-all-trades. The current M’Hael is of this faction, and was once its Head. Colors: yellow and gray Shen al'Dieb Cha - Wind Talon These men are often extremely powerful channelers although sometimes can be weak physically. They double the Brown and White Ajah’s in that they devote their lives as Asha'man to the pursuit of knowledge, reason, and truth. Some dedicate their lives to finding lost information, weaves, and items of the Power. They are the go to men for objects of power or information on any subject. These are the explorers of the Shen’s, and a great deal of Dieb Cha find themselves abroad. They will often immerse themselves in a culture and are said to be rather intuitive individuals. Because of the nature of their pursuits, the Asha’man of this Shen are not as close to each other as members of the other Shen are, and often times do not take the aid of others easily. While not official recruiters, they sometimes engage in this because of their wandering. They hold the most Warders of the three Shen and have made this a common thing to do. Using the information they collect, the Dieb Cha often aid the world in becoming more “modernized”. They hold many positions within the hierarchy and running of the Black Tower and serve as advisors locally within Tar Valon for daily running activities of the city and the Towers combined. In battle, these men are ruthless opponents and employ the deadliest of weaves upon their enemies. They are pointed, no nonsense individuals in this regard, and are fierce opponents because of their extraordinary mastery of Saidin. They are sometimes jokingly referred to as recluse, and in more pointed examples, odd. Colors: dark red and dark blue |
