History:

Karanina Mardin, daughter of Krisan Mardin and Riadna Aemlan, was born as the fifth child of the family. Krisan was the nephew of the High Seat of House Cadran, a relatively small but ambitious House. Riadna Aemlan was an Andoran, a minor noble herself, who had seduced the innocent eighteen-year-old Krisan and wed him after a month of her arrival in Lugard. Her past was clouded in mystery, and some said that even Krisan didn’t know of her past. At 35, she was almost twenty years older than her new husband.

But no one could deny their love. Even the most sceptict relatives of Krisan could not help seeing the admiring glances and tender kisses between them. Riadna bore six children, and they were all loved and admired by their parents.

Karanina was a happy child. She had five siblings to play with, and their parents showered them with gifts and luxuries. They weren’t the wealthiest of nobles, but the children were not in need of anything. Karanina was one of the quieter children; the second oldest, Oliva, was the noisiest and used to throw temper tantrums, and the oldest, Kristian, was the most admired because of his intelligent remarks and quick learning pace. The High Seat took notice of him too; he was to be raised as one of the candidates for the High Seat.

They were all educated as nobles were; politics, history, mathematics, self-defence, horse-back riding, etiquette. Karanina loved the lessons, because they were mostly taught by their parents. She especially loved private tutoring lessons with them, the rare moments when she could be alone with her mother or father. She admired both greatly, and had set her mother firmly as her role model. Riadna was a caring mother and wife, but she was strong against the sly remarks of Krisan’s relatives. Riadna was never liked inside the House, but she would not be hurt by their hidden scorn. She stayed by her husband and children and supported them with their every turn and most of all, taught them not to care if others made fun of them.

As years went by, Kristian more clearly took the role of the House’s favourite. The High Seat’s attention forced Krisan and Riadna to take a careful and thorough role in his education. Oliva, with her demanding nature and striking looks was showered with attention as well. She turned into a strong and independent young woman, and was bound to be offered a beneficial marriage. As Karanina was turning into a young woman herself, she felt like she no longer received as much of her parents’ attention. She was very agitated by this. So in order to win a bit more of their love back, she started to mimic the behaviour of her older siblings. She studied very hard, often even late at night, to gain a reputation as a fast learner like Kristian had, and paid close attention to her clothes and looks to outwin the beautiful Oliva. Quiet and reserved as she was, she even started voicing her opinions and wants more loudly to be more like her demanding sister. For a while this seemed to work; her parents did pay more attention to her, but some of that attention was negative because of her sudden change in nature. So she stopped being more demanding, and settled for being beautiful and a faster learner. Her parents were delighted, so Karanina went to great lengths to please them more: she sometimes starved herself to fit into a smaller dress and trained hard to tone her figure, and she took extra lessons and sometimes spent full nights reading so she could impress her parents with her knowledge.

She grew from a girl into a woman with her parents encouraging this unhealthy behaviour, unbeknownst to them. But since Oliva’s temper grew worse and her demands were greater, the beneficial marriage did not seem so obvious anymore. Most Murandian lords were looking for a meeker woman, someone to raise their children, not to fight with them for power. Karanina seemed to be of the more sought-after, meeker type. Suddenly she was the center of the attention when it came to boosting the House’s power with good marriages. Karanina was a minor noble, but her parents thought that higher Lords could still be interested in her.

So in different balls and gatherings, Karanina was often introduced to different young Lords before Oliva. Her older sister was of course furious, but Karanina’s indifferent approach to her shouted words of insult only made Oliva seem a worse choice as a wife. Karanina was happy with all the attention, especially from her mother. Karanina had never admired her more than she did when she was seventeen; Riadna showed few signs of old age and was more loving and determined than ever.

But then the High Seat of their House was assassinated. Kristian was a poor second in the rivalry for the Seat; their cousin, Eldar, took the position. Eldar was a malicious man in his thirties; he hated Kristian because of their life-long rivalry for the Seat, so he pointedly ignored, undermined or outrigth denied all of Kristian’s ideas and thoughts. Since the family was clearly not favoured by the High Seat, the other nobles of the House started to ignore the siblings as well. Riadna was furious, and tried even harder to promote her daughters so they could have a happier life in some other House. For her sons, there was little she could do. They were ignored and pushed out of power.

This continued for a year, and the hostilities against the family became more evident and even violent. Kristian was assassinated, and there was no doubt in anyone’s mind that it was Eldar. Life became unbearable. Krisan proposed that they would go to Andor and seek for Riadna’s relatives, but Riadna refused hotly. But she agreed that something had to be done. Oliva had managed to escape the situation by marrying a Murandian Lord of a House much beneath her. But they were too late; Krisan died in his bed, of ‘natural causes’, as Eldar put it. And he did not try to hide the fact that Riadna and the siblings would soon meet the same fate.

Riadna panicked; she was finally defeated, she finally had to run away and leave the House. She did not know what to do. She herself and the siblings were still deep in mourning, but one morning Riadna woke up her children and told them to pack. They were going on a little trip.

That trip turned out to be a long trip indeed, and Riadna would not tell them where they were going. But Karanina was just happy that she could be with her mother. The loss of her father had been devastating, but the marvels they saw during the way to wherever they were going enticed her nonetheless. She had never been outside Murandy. And the greatest thing they saw a month later; an island that was dominated by two large and beautiful towers, one white and one black. Karanina had heard of this Tar Valon, and of these Aes Sedai and Asha’man, but her knowledge was only hearsay and rumour. Her parents had never approached the subject.

Finally Riadna revealed her intention. She told the siblings how she once had been an initiate of the Tower. She had spent fifteen years as a novice, twelve of them with a block, which she never fully explained. It had turned out that she was too weak to become Aes Sedai, but they had kept her in the Tower so long because it took her so much time to learn to channel without injuring herself or others. After she had left the Tower, she had gone to Murandy and married Krisan. Only Krisan had known this secret.

Karanina was shocked and insulted that their mother turned out to be something else than she appeared, but that was not all. Riadna intended that the siblings would go to the Tower to be tested if they could channel as well. If they could, they would remain in the Tower. If they could not, Riadna would take them to Andor.

Karanina was apalled. She could not get her mind around the fact that their mother was ready to leave them if they could channel! But Riadna had made up her mind and would hear no excuses, so the sisters went to the White Tower and the brothers to the Black to be tested.

Karanina could channel. So could her sister, but her talent for wielding the One Power could be taught and she would not be strong enough to be Aes Sedai, so she did not remain in the Tower. Her brothers could not channel. Karanina, though, showed great potential, so she was donned in white in an hour. And her family left.

Karanina was crushed. Everyone she had loved had left her. Her mother had kept secrets from her. She had worked so hard to gain her parents’ love and approval, and her mother had left her without a second thought. Karanina was deeply depressed for the first month of her stay in the Tower. She barely ate and did not respond to the different punishments she received for skipping classes and chores. She did not care.

But the Mistress of Novices was kind. She did not give up on her, but tried to make her see sense over and over again. Gradually Karanina accepted the fact that she could not return to her family and there was nothing she could do but study in the White Tower and one day become Aes Sedai. The Mistress of Novices told her what kind of things Aes Sedai could do, what Karanina could do when she was raised. Karanina started taking the classes and did her chores, and after six months in the Tower, she was recoverd. She embraced her studies and started the long journey to become Aes Sedai.

At first she replaced her mother with the Mistress of Novices as her role model. She studied hard again to gain acceptance from her teachers, she did her chores dutifully to avoid punishments and she was meek and compliant as a novice was expected to be. She had few friends among the novices, because she was reserved and some novices did not like her habit of trying to please everyone. She gained the reputation as the Mistress of Novices’ favourite.

Karanina did not pay attention to the rumours and slight hostilities. She worked hard and did try to please everyone above her own rank, sometimes straining herself in order to do so. She was raised to Accepted in five years.

As an Accepted, her whole personality was put to the test. One of her teachers, Rekuelle Sedai of the Red Shen, saw Karanina for what she was; a young woman with low self-esteem who thought that pleasing everyone was the way to get love and attention. For the first time, Karanina was forced to question her own behaviour. Aes Sedai had to be strong and independent, and Karanina was neither. She would not become Aes Sedai if she kept on seeking love from her superiors. As an Aes Sedai, she would be the superior.

Other Aes Sedai echoed Rekuelle’s teachings, and some joined her in her effort to teach Karanina some heahlthy self-respect. It was a long process, but she did learn. She realized that when she was Aes Sedai she could do whatever she wanted to do. She didn’t have to look up to anyone, people would look up to her. Of course she respected authority, but she did not go over her way to please them more than was expected of her. She started questioning her own behaviour, and the demands of others. She started pondering what she wanted to do, what were her own goals and priorities. For the first time since her childhood, she embraced her own personality without moulding it to fit others’ expectations. She started to recognise her own strengths and weaknesses. After sixteen years of this process, she was raised the shawl. She knew what she wanted now, so she chose the shawl with the Blue fringes. She would bring justice to the world, justice that her family and she did not receive. She would right wrongs and promote fairness.

For ten years after her raising she remained in the Tower, learning the secrets of the Tower and the Blue Ajah. She was not as focused in politics as some Blue sisters were; she now had the strength to differ from the norm. Her goal was more on charity work; she studied different cultures and how the underprivileged people were treated in each. She started travelling, and did not approach the leaders of nations, but worked straight with the people, helping them financially, but demanding results for her money. She gave cheap loans to women and poor families who needed money to start a business. But her goal seemed unattainable; she could not help everyone. But she did not let that depress her, but felt happy that she had been able to help so many. There were always sly women and men who explained their intentions with sincere words but intended to use the money on drink and luxuries, but after a few years of her work Karanina could recognize a lie as soon as it was uttered.

She kept on working for thirty more years, only occasionally returning to the Tower. She lived humbly herself and dispensed a lot of her personal money to the poor. But she was no fool; she did demand her money back when the business started to prosper. Some businesses failed, but Karanina always gave a second chance; but never a third. Some women she emplyoed herself as her eyes-and-ears. There were losses, but there were more victories. Numerous families all over the Westlands had been lifted from poverty, owing great gratitude to Karanina.

But when she turned hundred, she was summoned to the Tower. The Blue sisters were impressed with her work, even though some did not approve of it. Two new sisters wished to join her. Karanina took them under her wing gladly, and taught them everything she had learned. In ten years, they were ready to start working on their own, and one of them took another Blue sister to tutor. Now there were four sisters working on the same goal, and Karanina was delighted.

Two more sisters offered to help, a Blue and a Yellow. The two women made a wonderful team, and after six years of traveling with them, Karanina encouraged them to continue their work together. Karanina herself was summoned to the Tower again, to be a Sitter of the Blue Ajah. Karanina felt that now that other sisters were working on the ground-level, Karanina could help more by working on the upper level, even if it meant staying in the Tower. For five years Karanina was a Sitter, and then she was offered the positions of Mistress of Novices. Karanina gladly approved, jumping at the chance to educate young novices and Accepted.

She loved her new position. She could help so many as the Mistress of Novices. But she soon realized that she could not remain in the Tower for long. The war was looming, and she ached to get back out there in the world, to help those who would certainly be trodden on in the midst of war. As soon as war was declared on the Towers, Karanina stepped down and went to the fields. She helped wherever she could, giving money to rebuild homes, tending the wounded with her meager ability in Healing, looking after orphaned children and finding them new homes. Once the siege of Tar Valon began, she did not return, but went to the besieged Caemlyn to help instead. There, one night, on the street, without a threat in sight, she was stabbed in the ribs and the culprit ran away before Karanina could even embrace the Source. There, alone in the dark, she bled to death.

approved B)

I enjoyed her character progression, it was all very believable. Mainly the part about how she needed to become the person in charge, and how years of practice she finally suceeded and it led her to be a great leader, and eventual mistress of novices. ^_^ I also liked the whole game of house approach. A cool perspective in the books that we hint at here at Fusions, but few have actually explored.
