Afternoon people. Some very nice progress has been made on the game this week. 2 major things got finished this week. The first major thing was moving the majority of the code into classes for faster debugging and better organization. The code is a lot more manageable now and the file size of the game has been significantly decrease. Moving stuff to classes has also made the FPS of the 2D systems alone faster. Before classes, the 2d systems got an FPS of around 800. With classes, that double to around 1500 FPS. The second major thing was improving the VBO implementation for model rendering. If you guys didn't know, there was a bug with the VBO that caused me to think I was rendering 50 million vertices with great FPS, but it was really only 50,000 verts. When I fixed the bug, it got around 2 FPS for a true amount of 50 million verts. However, I have been able to speed it up some. Using indexing, the VBO implementation is now able to do 2.5 million verts with around 80 FPS. Doubling the verts to 5 million, 40 FPS. The VBO isnt able to go any higher than 10 million vertices (crashes) with around 10 FPS, but I dont think we will be needing that many ![]() Now, I am working hard on getting the model loader improved and faster. It is now able to import normals instead of calculating them itself, which has really speed up the application. Now, with a 100k vert model, it is able to convert the file in 10 seconds as opposed to a previous time of this-is-taking-to-long-its-been-3-hours-and-my-cpu-is-maxed-out. The goals for this week: -Figure out textures for models (which will require fiddling with the model loader some more) -Figure out an LOD for terrain textures (realism) -Improve lighting situation -Work on realistic clouds/sun cycle (may take a bit) -Work on biome generation |
